official remastered, reissue of two of esther phillips’ breathtaking covers from the early ‘70s. firstly, esther’s cover of gil scott-heron’s timeless masterpiece ‘home is where the hatred is’. a haunting tale of addiction filled with the rawest of emotions, that can only truly be covered by someone who has fought that same battle with dependency. the pain in esther’s voice completely conveys this vulnerability and does gill scott heron’s original total justice. heart-wrenching and completely absorbing in its honesty, it’s a sincere portrayal of the demons both artist’s faced in their lives. on the b side, an adaptation of eddie floyd’s ‘i ve never found a girl (to love me like you do)’. phillips’ trademark soulful tones suit this sweet serenade so well, with the passion oozing from every word she sings. sit back, relax and prepare to have your heart melted all over again.

nach dem überaus erfolgreichen start mit veröffentlichungen von konzerten aus dem legendären hamburger club onkel pÖ im frühjahr des jahres und dem überwältigenden presseecho setzt das label jazzline in zusammenarbeit mit dem norddeutschen rundfunk die reihe ab oktober 2017 fort. sie war eine der großen stimmen des soul und des blues: esther phillips. die viel zu früh verstorbene künstlerin tourte in den 50er und 60er jahren durch die blues clubs der vereinigten staaten. erst mit ihrem discohit what a difference a day makes wurde sie einem größeren publikum bekannt und erreichte den kommerziellen höhepunkt ihrer karriere. das vorliegende konzert aus dem hamburger onkel pö zählt zu einer ihrer letzten großen auftritte. das vom ndr aufgezeichnete konzert im „onkel pö“, mit kraftvollen begleitern in der band und sehr enthusiastischem publikum, dokumentiert auf gleich zwei cd’s die außergewöhnlichkeit dieser großartigen künstlerin. noch einmal gelingt die große verzauberung in diesem hamburger november des jahres 1978. esther phillips wird wenige wochen später erst 43 jahre alt. aber die zeit läuft ab – die 50 hat die sängerin schon nicht mehr erreicht. am 7. august 1984 ist sie gestorben. dieses zeitdokument ist ein „must have“!

mei zhiyong had been instrumental in arranging dp’s tour of china. when mei zhiyong and dave phillips first met in beijing in july 2014, mei spoke not a word of english and dp not a word of chinese. and they we were to embark on an 18 city tour together. verbal communication between mei and dp was obviously difficult to say the least. it would often result in comical misunderstandings, total puzzlement or bewilderment, but it would also be a source of constant amusement with wonderful moments of instinctive trust. but then there is sound, the ultimate language… to return the favor, dp arranged a tour for mei and himself in october 2015 through 20 european cities. which is where the source material was recorded. dp then selected, dissected and transformed those recordings to work out something different, not just a collaboration, not just an amalgam of two styles, but something new for both. the compositions on this lp are the result.

soul brother records are delighted to release for record store day 2017 one of the most elusive soul lp’s of all time, a truly holy grail album. susan phillips ‘soft sexy soul’ was recorded for sylvia robinson’s all platinum label 1971, pressed in small quantities. few copies have ever surfaced, it is so rare that many collectors doubt if it was ever released, it is not listed on discogs and it has never been recorded as selling on ebay. if an original copy were found today, it would surely sell for a substantial amount of money. the album has that classic early 70’s new jersey orchestrated soul sound. the album contains the in demand 2-step single ‘he knows my key (is always in the mailbox)’, the northern soul floater ‘answer to my prayer’, detroit sounding ‘please don’t keep me lonely’ the multi paced ‘where do i go from here’ and many great ballads like ‘he’s gone’ and ‘this i’ll guarantee’. demand from soul collectors is expected to be high and this album is likely to sell out quickly in the same way that last years ‘this is eleanore mills’ (also from all platinum) and all the previous soul brother records rsd releases have.

it s been some months since the last gold release but only david phillips two bangers doogiehouser and daaance daance had the golden touch to deserve the expensive metal. and being played by gold rcrds boss rainer weichhold for a long time he knew exactely how to make his own version together with greek kling klong artist vangelis kostoxenakis. as enzo siffredi s last keno records release became such a big track in rainer s dj set he was very glad that enzo agreed for his remix of doogiehouser . beware of the doogie.

following on from four volumes of well received vinyl releases, rory phillips mixed fortunes singles series returns for its fifth outing. after collaborations with martin dubka and l-vis 1990 on the last two volumes phillips goes it alone for this, the penultimate instalment in the series.

steering away from the album format, rory will be releasing the music as mixed fortunes, a singles club of 6 2 track 12 inch records, released throughout 2012. named to reflect the stylistic range of the series, mixed fortunes, will channel the same spirit of musical adventure heard in both phillipss remix work and in his genre-hopping dj sets, with tracks both by phillips on his own as well as some undertaken with a range of top secret collaborators. each 12 will contain 2 tracks and will be limited to 300 copies. there will be no remixes.
