afterhours. is back with ukrainian underground talent silat beksi. as expected, the 3-tracker appropriately named -transend ep- displays a fine selection of stripped-down music prone to dancefloor introspection. the title track transend shows silat s talent for creating steady, bare-boned grooves, filling the sonic space with menacing atmospheres, chopped vocals and bizarre modular squelches. flipside s monoliza follows the same stable groove principle but applies quirky sound-design techniques reminiscent of the golden ages of microhouse for an added swing. elephant dream , the ep s closing track, swaps the four-by-four rhythms with breakbeat-infused constructions, adding just the right amount of sway for its deeply floating atmosphere.

ukraine’s minimal hypnotist silat beksi now prepares to make his signature mark on his label modeight with the aptly titled “on my own” ep. this is his first solo contribution to the label, having initially christened its opening with the heady, breakbeat infused stylings of the “inception” ep. the result of a collaborative effort alongside heidelberg producer durrrred. modeight’s discography already boasts a roster of producers who are pushing boundaries in the minimal field, with romania’s rqz and dragutesku, germany’s durrrred and “methylat” duo virkut & amin ravelle’s combined output constituting a powerful sonic statement for modeight. silat himself continues to delve deep into his extensive musical influences, showing no signs of slowing his creative output as the talent prepares to release more music on welsh imprint curtea veche and milan label hashplant. this ep sees silat in his element as he laces nuanced rhythms on top of funky bassline riffs and hazy electronic artefacts, cementing himself once again as a unique and characteristically engaging artist.

this production is a collaborative effort of jakarta-based divisi62 and berlin-based disk (formerly known as diskant). it features 4 tracks by the constituents of divisi62 that are inspired by indonesia’s urban slums, dangdut and pencak silat.

the modeight label catalog contains the works of such artists as silat beksi, rqz, durrred, dragutesku, olivian nour, university of nowhere, svet. these records are not collecting dust on the shelves of private collectors - instead, they are actively played by djs. with support from the leading romanian artists, the label’s tracks were broken in on the dancefloors of the sunwaves festival. the fifth release of the label is brought to you by amin ravelle and virkut, who joined forces under the name methylat. these highly effective groovy and minimalistic tracks are available only on vinyl.
