ben sims’ symbolism celebrates its 20th release with an 8 tracker featuring the first original ben sims material in the past few years. launched in 1999, symbolism was initially intended as side project of sims theory imprint but quickly developed in to a standout label itself with releases from sims (as aural emote), exos, reeko and a split release with function hitting home on the circuit. after a 9 year hiatus symbolism was reactivated in in 2015 and has since dropped 12”s from the likes of mike gervais, d_func, jc & kastil and george tounisidis,

after a split release with chambray on ben sims’ hardgroove in 2016 greek-producer george tounisidis is set to drop a new 12” for symbolism in november entitled ‘solidarity’. with his first two cuts for the british dj’s imprint picking up support from the likes of dvs1, jackmaster and anthony parasole it’s unsurprising sims has tapped him for a full release on symbolism. since signing, tracks from ‘solidarity’ have also featured in both ben sims’ boiler room and run it red radio shows, resulting in a barrage of requests for release details which tees up the ep nicely. musically, ‘solidarity’ moves between scattered sequences and stabs (‘three clicks left’ & ‘solidarity’), muted hypnotics (‘nekyia’) and fractured acid (‘workers’) while all retaining the distinct sense of movement and dynamism that typifies symbolism releases.

after mike gervais’ strident work on sym017, ben sims’ symbolism imprint returns with spanish newcomer jlg’s four track ‘convolution’ ep. originally coming to sims’ attention via the demo section of his ‘run it red’ radio show/podcast, javier lg has previously released for dynamic reflection and substance but it’s the quality of his unreleased material that secured his place on symbolism. characterised by intricate and interwoven melodic rhythms, some at the forefront and some almost there, jlg’s debut for the label is an infectious and consummate affair.

following a superb contribution to dvs1s mistress imprint in 2015, minneapolis dj, producer and promoter mike gervais drops the four track precision process ep for ben sims symbolism imprint. an integral part of minneapolis small but vocal techno scene via his system parties and label, gervais is steadily breaking out and precision process will certainly aid his cause. from the tunnelling, rave tinged machine funk of precision process and power and pressure through to the fever-dream hypnotics of ‘deep breath’ and motion, the latest ep makes for a memorable take on classic techno elements.

after his two excellent maxis on dax js monnom black & ben sims symbolism, binny is back with the french zion-lyon guys from clft for a second release. four heavy-banger-outstandingtunes, this time. no place for remixes. if you wonder how it sounds like, lets say it is electronic body techno with a touch of cosmic-retroesque axis atmosphere but still some groove, nevertheless. 500 copies only.

following its recent reactivation and releases from jc & kastil and d_func, ben sims symbolism imprint sets out its autumn stall with a blistering four tracker from alphadrum. rigourously roadtested by sims himself over the past six months, this is an essential release from young italian producer, alphadrum.

ben sims symbolism continues apace with a release from binny, a liverpool-based producer dj otherwise known for some superb output as part of phantom planet outlaws. comprising three original tracks, the subtractive rhythm ep also takes in a remix from long-time sims collaborator and british techno legend, paul mac.

the revival of symbolism continues with j.c. & kastil. j.c. aka jose cabera is otherwise known as spanish house producer kasper as well as cropping up on fred p s boards imprint as j.c. in 2014 while kastil is widely recognised for his output and stewardship of soul notes

ben sims reignites his dormant symbolism imprint for 2015. last active in 2006, symbolism is about music with real mood and will continue to impart sims vision of techno through releases from newcomers and established acts alike. the first release comes from d_func and includes an edit from sims himself.

>vibrational studies (in echospace)< is an alternate version of album opener >in echospace< and revolves around a relentless cycle of washed-out analogue loops layered around submerged field recordings and electric currents that somehow propel the track while at the same time immersing it in one of the headiest mixes hitchell and modell have ever recorded. >symbolism in transition< finds modell deploying a deep and padded configuration with a sort of late night shuffle so beloved of move d, all squashed house vibes, sparkling melodic currents and bursts of barely- there white noise û its a gentle, beautiful thing.

a prison of predictions is the first lp from the ownlife label (excepting seld series, focused in pressing back gems from two decades ago) and also by the person behind it. leiras.
on it, the producer showcases a compendium featuring the characteristic sound of the platform, pushing ahead cyclical techno together with tracks that evoke the persistence of remembrance. echoing the preterit sound of sandwell district and renewed sound formulas from almost two decades of uk electronica. ambient brush strokes outline soundscapes surrounded by analogue sounds that share space with more direct and snappy songs. a scape on the frenetic side of electronica with an idm-leaning end closes the equation.
substantiating his versatility as a producer with the label’s previous 10 titles and undoubtedly confirmed on this record, leiras offers a consequent closing for the first stage of ownlife, which finishes on this point in order to look for new sound structures for the next transmissions.
this lp has been created in berlin during the last months using mixed recording techniques with the purpose of conceiving a narrative thread that gives coherence to the release, without doubt an inflection point in leiras’ discography.

up next on arcing seas is magna pia with his second ep after his 2016 debut incantations on coun-terchange. behind the alias is hüseyin evirgen, one half of cassegrain. arcs-05 has a clear focus of providing combative dance floor trips, unorthodox sonic moods with subtle 90s techno references. the eps track titles artemisia, semiramis and akasha pay tribute to three mighty ancient heroines of very different origins. consequently, magna pia continues his in-terest in combining techno tracks with archaic symbolism.

unknown archetype aka roxy tripp & oliver kucera debut their visceral experimental techno for r&s on this four track ep.
unknown archetype is a collaborative project between roxy tripp, a british conceptual artist & music producer, and oliver kucera a czech born producer & live performer, residing in the netherlands. with an extensive background of solo projects in the underground scene, the duo began their collaboration together as unknown archetype in 2015. the tripp ep is an abrasive, visceral ep of electronic body music underpinned by themes of jungian psychology, symbolism and mythology. the industrial tech funk of lead track ‘voyeurism’ kicks things off - skittering breakbeats, squalling filters and blistering snares pile-driving the listener into ecstatic submission, while ‘tripp’ see the duo employing sizzling bursts of white noise and caustic percussion over a jagged rhythm box figure. matters are pared right back for the rigid austerity of closer ‘the serpent’ - the dubbed out lead stab quivers over a strobing 909 drum groove and scything cymbals. effortlessly balancing deep late night sounds with a unique character and intricate headphone centric programming, the tripp ep is a fitting and welcome addition to r&s’s storied catalogue.
