manana presents a new remix ep bringing together some essential re-works of sound species and ache meyis collaboration recordings. originally recorded in 2016 in santiago de cuba during the lead-up to the manana festival in the city, the original sessions were an inspired fusion of ache meyis deep folkloric afro-cuban styles with sound species subtle electronic touches. the new re-works have attracted some familiar names from clubland: broken beat don ig culture keeps the roots of ogun meyi meyi intact with a bass-heavy, percussive attack brilliant uk drummer and producer tom skinner strips back egrem bata jam on a pulsing new version chicago legend ron trent creates a more melodic dancefloor re-work of alinas calypsos while sound species themselves beef up the original afro-haitian rhythms of the same track for a dubbier treatment.

2016 fand in santiago de cuba das manana festival statt. es führte zu einem intensiven dialog zwischen vertretern regional-karibischer musiktraditionen und internationalen independent-künstlern aus dem spannungsfeld von dance, avantgarde und jazz. mit der gründung des labels manana wurden vor ort geknüpfte fäden aufgenommen und weitergesponnen. daraus resultierten bereits zwei außergewöhnliche tonträger. -soundspecies & ache meyi- ist der dritte dieser reihe, er fusioniert auf aufsehenerregende weise folk aus kuba mit britischer elektronik. hinter soundspecies verbergen sich zwei als djs und produzenten aktive brüder aus dem englischen dorset. in ihrer musik loten sie die verbindungen zwischen den klängen und formen elektronischer tanzmusik einerseits und den repetitiven mustern von traditionellem folk andererseits aus. die formation ache meyi hat sich hingegen afro-haitianischen rhythmen und stilen wie bembe, vodu, gaga und merengue verschrieben. und das auf eine ziemlich dynamische weise, was angesichts des bandnamens wenig überrascht. die yoruba-begriffe -ache- und -meyi- bedeuten so viel doppelte power.

soul jazz records’ latest album ‘yoruba! songs and rhythms for the yoruba gods in nigeria’ is newly recorded in lagos, nigeria. the album is co-produced by laolu akins, founding member of the legendary 1970s nigerian afro-funk/rock group blo, and soul jazz records label head stuart baker. the heavyweight double vinyl comes in a gatefold sleeve with download code included.

robo arigo is an extraordinary multi-instrumentalist from nigeria’s ogun state. a founding member of pogo ltd, he played bass, guitar and organ on both their albums and plays all kinds of instruments, including cowbell, on sexy thing too. one listen to the record, however, (and a quick look at the back of the cover), and it’s pretty clear that playing bass is where robo’s heart lay. especially when he gets to slap it.

‘os orixas’ is rich in layered percussion, horns and guitars. singer eloah’s lead vocals are reminiscent of the likes of ellen mcilwaine, elza soares and joyce. samba, funk, folk, jazz and mpb over ijexa and african grooves, that combine beautifully across the moods. os orixas refers to one of the manifestations of the ’supreme god’ in the yoruba faith.
