though quality techno is regularly associated with the colder climates of berlin and detroit, the recent developments happening on the iberian peninsula have been hard to ignore. one of the region’s more interesting and consistent producers in this decade has been maceo plex, owner of the ellum audio label. armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of signature club sounds, and with an ability to investigate ‘darker’ side of modern life (a tendency that can be heard especially well on past plex-produced tracks like “conjure balearia”), plex has located the “goldilocks zone” between funk liberation and mechanical control. mastering this balancing act is a skill that separates the best producers from the legions of also-rans: it shines through in his back catalog and is back in full force for his new “tesseract” ep on ellum.
opening this essential release is the slow and spaced out groove of replicant v1, with fat synths and dark spacecraft sounds circling you as the drums grow ever bigger. shoulder of orion then drops into a rickety groove with soulful pads stretching off to the horizon as rough drums march below. proving he has real range, motor rotor is a deep and driving track that conveys a real sense of motion as it races along an intergalactic highway, and love on time picks up the pace yet further with twisted synths roaming free above a motorik kick and icy hi hats. last of all for the digital release, replicant v2 is a spacey and dramatic techno effort with widescreen pads and gurgling synths making for a turbulent ride. first vinyl bonus cut hang on is a forceful seven minutes of eerie and cosmic techno that stretches out in all directions as manic melodies rain down from above. lastly, traktion is full of ominous drones, crashing percussion and sombre pads and makes for a dramatic and driving track that is filled with pain
ltd 2016 repress , crosstown rebels get set to unleash one of the years most highly anticipated records >cant leave you<, from one of the biggest stars of 2011, maceo plex. the flawless >sweating tears ep<, is a double headed dancefloor delight – with the equally as hot >stop you hate< on the flip. hot on the heels of his anthemic >vibe your love<, superb >your style< and killer >life index< album (crosstown rebels) – maceo plex is one of the hottest properties in dance music right now! >cant leave you< is without doubt a smash record of epic proportions. already winning over legions of fans after its outings at some of the worlds biggest dance events over the last few months, the demand for this record is now reaching fever pitch. >cant leave you< is maceo plex truly arriving at his signature sound. erics fusion of lush instrumentals and disco bounce with a darker vein of rumbling bass – along with funky hand-claps and guitars and lively synth lines, amounts to an irresistible concoction of immaculately produced dancefloor disorder. b-side >stop your hate< is going to be a fellow summer terrace favourite with an epic build and disco breakdown that showcases maceo plex at the peak of his technical prowess. just as stomping as >cant leave you< but with a murkier quality >stop your hate< is maceo flexing his interplanetary funk muscle while delivering an affirmative message to the party crowd
we are happy to welcome maceo plex to drumcode with the fourth instalment of his conjure series, conjure infinity . featuring two tracks conjure dreams and conjure floyd , both are peak time monsters that introduce two very different elements. conjure dreams utilises a groovy, melodic bass that is reinforced using tight thumping drums to shatter any dance floor into the universe. conjure floyd builds into a more heads down techno vibe with a very interesting breakdown. two sure fire tracks to ignite the floor.
maceo plex teams up with gabriel ananda to deliver the momentous solitary daze. an awe-inspiring piece of music maceo and gabriel have pulled out all the stops in creating this anthemic masterpiece. a sure fire dancefloor destroyer! the original is also deftly remixed by barnt and by north lake. the a side features north lakes infectious deeper remix whilst the flip features barnts epic revision of the original. both of which create fantastic versions of the original version, taking it off into new stratospheres. another great single from ellum, who seem to be going from strength to strength.
after stumbling across good guy mikesh and making an edit of his track *freddy* - maceo plex delved deeper into the back catalogue and decided he was bona fide ellum material… one demo request later and the *from another world ep* was born. a trio of original tracks, one of which features production partner filburt, it is dark, beautiful and warm music for cold winter nights.
maceo plex gets back to some serious business on ellum audio, this time in collaboration with half of the duo odd parents, maars and featuring a vocal by florence bird. dark, dirty and future-facing, going back is a masterstroke of sonic hypnosis with snarling bass and crisp drums underneath the epic strings and ghostly, disembodied vocal. theres a massive dub version on the flip, which loses the vocal but none of the intensity, as galloping synths imbue a dark disco vibe.
2016 repress. the london-based producer and vocalist has recently inked a deal with the legendary crosstown rebels label and is currently putting the finishing touches to a new album (the follow up to 2010s love harder). the first track to be taken from the album is emperor, which features additional vocals from kali.

dj t.s pleasure principle album immerses itself, wholly and rapturously, into electronic musics legacy of authentic soul, helping to usher in a renaissance of groove-heavy house. following the success of the albums singles burning and sense, dj t. turns to the sultry vocal track >city life< to launch into summer anthem mode. dj t.s unconcealed dancefloor curiosity brings his body music instincts to the fore, with the classic sounding house number >city life<, shadowy quirks disarm and charm, while cari goldens uniquely programmed vocals add broad brushstrokes of texture and atmosphere. >city life< recalls the 1980s warehouse era, and finds cari crooning, siren-like >the citys in my veins…<, mixing a rough-round-the edges vocal treatment with hands-in-the-air chord stabs. the >dj t.s rework< spreads the arrangement wider, and dj t. draws even more groove from the original with his dub version. a deep bass swing drives the track, and increases its intensifying atmosphere
jin choi is a musician, producer, dj and live artist based in berlin, germany. equally focused on groove and melodic structures, his music fuses electronic and naturalistic sounds to move the head and body. once coined modern minimal, chois productions are equal parts emotion, melody and rhythm. full range is his first release on serialism records. in a recent interview, choi described himself as a burial loving music-nerd who is simply trying to create his own musical language. he has released on lessizmore, contexterrior, romanphoto & archipel, to name a few. for ser10, he joins forces with maceo plex (aka maetrik, the moniker he saves for his darker techno productions) to do just that. most known for his recent revered deep-house single, vibe your love on crosstown, plex makes the release the perfect late-night tool. first up is full range, a dubby tech-house number with ominous and increasingly glitchy repetitive vocals that remind the listener of what choi seems to already know - music is the universal language, music is no longer irrelevant. next, half baked, the eps star, manages to perfectly fuse industrial sounds with melody making a blissed-out, deep- house track. mysterious squeaks, hisses and factorial inner workings provide the backdrop while warm time-stretched freestyle vocals guide us through the production. maceos deep remix is around 9-minutes of chicago house inspired sounds layered with snappy high hats and emotive chords.

sometimes you have to look backwards to move forwards. in the case of maceo plexs dj kicks mix, its case of looking back with a different perspective. while maceo plexs mix is composed mainly of records that are up to 20 years old, its the tone of those records that is important. eric estornel, to use plexs real name, has certainly come up with a forward-thing set that doesnt sound like much else out there.
