tbd, the decade-old project from doug lee (an-i) and justin van der volgen, is back! known for their set-defining big room monster jams, below sees them on a deep, heavy and very trippy analogue tip. synths wheeze and bubble while a thick syncopated bass and a giant kick drum keep the proceedings firmly locked to the dance floor. on the flip, legendary japanese dj and producer dj kent steps up on remix duty under his the backwoods alias. building off the original, he adds sharp percussion and tastefully refocuses the track, creating a perfect complimentary mix to the a-side.

after a recent short n sweet stint on tensnakes mirau imprint irish ex-pat mano le tough reemerges on internasjonal where he first saw the light of the day as a producer with the much acclaimed warhorn. yet even with such a rather small, straightforward discography mano managed to sculpture his unmistakeably very own style fusing the deeper shades of house and techno with a strong melodic sensibility that one would never even get the faintest idea to file it under the mostly bland tech-house genre. oblique boast a perfect effective dramaturgy with slighty spooky broken melody box theme rising out of a thick mist of grinding chords before morphing into a deep acid finale. french gentlemen of distinction and many styles chateau flight toughen up the beats and throw in some african wood percussions and sparse psychedelic dub effects for a superb rhythmically multi-layered rework.

following last years acclaimed curse of soft rocks album, we are invited to revisit said masterpiece from an alternative entry — a robust compilation of remixes. every track is re-contextualized so wildly that we are left with a beautifully oblique yet complimentary rendering. the personnel employed vary in style and technique drastically, but such is the ethos of soft rocks, and furthermore the esp institute. at the end of the day, we implore you to shut up and listen. on this 12 inch (the first of 4 surrounding the revenge of soft rocks remix album) we are treated with a serious disco belted version of talking jungle as reworked by justin vandervolgen (tbd, gold channel, dfa, etc, etc) and an insanely serene take on obo by esp favorite tiago (sea power & change, gala drop, dfa, etc, etc)... good lord this is quite a piece of wax

the black dog are a legendary live act whose ability to destroy venues and wreck soundsystems is undeniable. they blur the boundaries between djing and performance while possessing an excellent sense of where to take the crowd. live, they represent purist techno, which is also utterly crowd pleasing. on record, tbd are famous for delivering subtlety, emotion, and intellectual richness, as well as great tunes, but never in their career have they managed to convey the sheer visceral impact of their performances as on liber dogma. this album contrasts with last years extremely well-received ambient outings on music for real airports and the dadavistic orkestra collaboration with members of the psychick warriors of gaia. while none of the bands artistry and care has been lost, there is now a greater focus on a pure, and utterly exhilarating, vision of how techno can transform the dancefloor into a realm of complete pleasure.

eric duncan (of rub n tug fame) drops release number four in his keep it cheap series - this time inviting the ever on-point justin vandervolgen (tbd) to take care of b side duties head and shoulders above the glut of edits out there, these dig much deeper & are purpose built for sweaty club use, and not to tantalize bedroom bloggers. as with the cult combi series, we expect these to sell out in a matter of days - 300 copies only.
