>mr guy< is a lovely slice of lovers rock and somewhat overlooked when released in 1980 but it has become a firm favourite with us here at bristol archive. >pretty girl< finds roots singer joshua moses showing his softer side, it was something of a hit on the original release and makes a natural pairing with sharons tune.
both tracks were originally released as singles on bristol label shoc-wave records some thirty years ago and were given their first digital release with their well deserved inclusion on >the bristol reggae explosion 1978 ¹ 1983<. >mr guy< also made it onto the limited vinyl version of the album, but running time constraints meant there was no room for >pretty girl< something we a very pleased to rectify with this vinyl release.

in den frühen 1980er jahren wurde i specialize in love von der amerikanischen sängerin sharon brown, die zufällig die nichte des songwriters phil medley ist, zu einem clubhit. der titel wurde offiziell im märz 1982 von dem bekannten label profile records in new york city veröffentlicht. der song war das produktionsdebüt von eddie o loughlin, der später das renommierte label next plateau gründete. „i specialize in love“ erreichte eine bemerkenswerte leistung, indem es sich drei wochen lang auf platz zwei der us hot dance club play-charts hielt. sein erfolg erstreckte sich auch auf die ganze welt, da er auch in den britischen singles-charts und in den niederländischen top 15 vertreten war und damit seinen status als internationaler club-hit festigte.

so far in its fledgling career, the ultra knites label has been populated by collaborations of the same name from the two founders sem marini and mike sharon. this third release sees the pair showcase their talents as solo artists with the first in a series of knite grooves releases, with sharon calling shotgun and manning proceedings on the a side. with a lilting female vocal hook, soft pads and jazzy rhodes touches, -people- is a classicist take on ny house that features some weighty kick drums, whilst -field of dreams- opts for a approach that s more indebted to the likes of mr fingers. marini delivers a peak time bumper in the shape of -voltage- which contrasts nicely with the deep rolling business of final track -music takes me-.
