in the last two years, paul régimbeau had put his most personal and earliest musical project mondkopf in stand-by mode. the rich arrangement work that defined his sound wasn’t fitting his desire of simplistic intensity anymore. his different collaborations (autrenoir, violent magic orchestra with vampilla & pete swanson, foudre!, oiseaux-tempêtes) forced him to explore new aspects of playing electronic music like a regular band member. the young producer was experimenting being a musician and embracing the experience. but after a year without composing, things changed on the tragic night of november 13th.
on this very night, the parisian set up machines he had acquired in the last few months and started improvising what became the first song on his new album: “they fall, but you don’t”. since that moment, paul regularly spent nights experimenting and recording what he felt at the time. while previous records reflected months of fine-tuning, these songs represent the mood of one evening, one night, the ones when you surrender yourself to the melancholy of the moment. much like a diary, the album is a compilation of these moments that escape reality in a chaotic and dark year.
earth is the third opus of foudre! a telluric drone quartet composed of frederic d. oberland (oiseaux-tempete, the rustle of the stars, farewell poetry), romain barbot (saaad, i pilot dæmon), grégory buffier (saaad, autrenoir), paul régimbeau (mondkopf, extreme precautions, autrenoir), featuring electric chimeras by christine ott on ondes martenot.
the cd included in this vinyl edition features the 15 tracks in the same order. mr oizo (aka quentin dupieux), the french producer and pioneer of modern electro alongside daft punk, air and cassius simply can’t and won’t stop working. having released 5 studio albums, 4 osts, a multitude of eps and directed 6 movies over the past 20 years, the ‘godfather’ is back with a new album. and this time, he is not alone as the tracklist features an impressive selection of quality guests: peaches, boys noize, skrillex and charli xcx among others. this new release will be a new occasion to further explore the mind of one of the most fantastically uncommon artist today.
behind this german-sounding pseudonym hides a lyrical, subtle and ambitious techno. mondkopf reveals on this ep his most federative facet with a tracklist in which immediacy never sacrifices imagination. this combination of a techno basis, trancy hooks and electronica sound processing make these nuits sauvages (wild nights) ambivalent, conquering and melancholy. la dame en bleu, his major piece, is already an underground hymn. les oiseaux de balthazar, mixes vocal pads, bells and birdcalls in a fantasy techno universe on a dynamic tempo. the result, once again, sounds absolutely unique. nuit sauvage softens the layers to emphasis on crunchy riffs and strong kicks, to finally come back to an epic dimension, always around in mondkopfs songs. remix side, matzak got hold of the very mental christmas, keeping its electro spirit.
