a strange confluence of sound that sounds part krautrock synth label brain records, part hyperdub. techno haze and synth wormholes with spectacular sound design that has banged at berghain and soundtracked winter night drives. greenspan is known mainly for his work with junior boys and jessy lanza and taraval is a longtime touring member of caribou, but both have released several 12” and eps of electronic exploration over the past few years. inspired by synthesizer minimalists like jd emmanuel, cluster and john carpenter, the two attempted to create a type of dance music with hardware that was indebted to their influences but did not feel intrinsically retrogressive. the idea was to make a type of raw synthesizer and drum machine music that could be listened to beside the hypermodern techno of pearson sound or actress. the cover art is a tribute to a mysterious mural that looms over the hamilton ontario area where the album was recorded. each of the five tracks on the ep were edited down from much longer recording jams which were done with hardware sequencers in real time. the recording was done completely off the floor with no overdubs or added material after the fact.

one half of the junior boys, jeremy greenspan makes his second appearance on jiaolong with the aid of none other than legendary, algorithmic composer, laurie spiegel. those not familiar with her work, spiegel is best known for her use of interactive and algorithmic logic as part of the compositional process, spiegel worked with buchla and electronic music laboratories synthesizers and subsequently many early, often experimental and prototype-level music and image generation systems. in the mid 80s, her most widely used software was the music mouse. here, greenspan works her piece >drums< into a confident dj tool, rolling steadily with angular electronic effects over a solid, weighty pulse. >sirius shake< employs a classic kompakt-style schaffle beat, mapping a curious robotic waltz.

jeremy greenspan, best known as the singer for junior boys, presents his debut solo productions on caribou/daphnis jialong label. apparently the first of a few 12 inches for greenspan this year, this 1st edition is a stripped-down disco dedication. a-sides >crown princess< works with a paucity of elements - hi-hat/kick pattern and trickling, silvery arpeggios with a clear streak of jbs melodic magic. flipsides >guu< is more experimental, sounding something like a berghain residents offbeat b-side reduced for more hypnotic indie/disco appeal. another good twelve from this limited imprint - get in while you can.

the white noise backdrop of modern life means that without some fine-tuning on our part, even established and progressive artists can become elusive on occasion. but since musical creativity involves a healthy drive to self-determination, and often a keen collaborative spirit, out of earshot doesn’t necessarily mean out of action.
certainly not in the case of junior boys, who’ve readied a new album, big black coat, via city slang. a strikingly energised and intuitively dynamic set that reconnects them to their techno roots without sacrificing their soulful pop nous or riding a revivalist wave, it’s also shaped by what jeremy greenspan and matt didemus have been doing in the five years since their last release.

jessy lanza s debut album *pull my hair back*, co-written and co-produced with jeremy greenspan from junior boys, is a 2013 flagship for what electronic pop could sound like, stripped of bloated, behaviourist impulses that treat listeners like lab rats. it is graceful and erotic without the gratuitous close ups, icey and sensual, sweet without rotting your teeth, emotional but with enough blue glow to pull your heart strings. jessys voice flutters through the synths seductively, insistent without the over-singing and grating choruses that plague so much contemporary pop. jessy lanza has a background as a singer and skilled piano scholar, and the duo share a mutual love of collecting the old hardware synths and drum machines that grace this collection of songs. transecting r&b, house, disco and 80s studio rock, the production is immaculate, reminiscent of early junior boys, treading that fine line between cold futurism and the r&b that jessy and jeremy are infatuated with.
the quietly pretty sounds of lucky are a highlight of the waiting room, seattle-based producer jeff mcilwains third full-length album for ghostly international. the tracks warm, immersive sounds are a fine representation of the abiding mood of the album as a whole, both soulful and groove-laden, sitting somewhere between electronic pop and experimentalism. for this single release, lucky comes with three remixes, all of which take different approaches to exploring the tracks reflective, downtempo mood
