criminal practice records, a trio of young ukrainian musicians well-known for their parties in kyiv, are launching their own label of the same name. the members of the project do not only perform together as djs but also make their own music under the nicknames ghetto sunrise, roma khropko and hopper field. the new label is aimed to reflect the tastes of the musicians as well as to spread that very ‘trending kyiv sound’ - the term coined by the fans of the group. circle movement ep features the tracks by the talented ukrainian producers, grec and sasha zlykh, whose works are worth the international attention, as well as the works of two of the members of criminal practice itself - hopper field and ghetto sunrise.

for those who know the story of the bridge wars, there is some irony found in the fact that scott la rock, representing the south bronx, was born in queens, though he did relocate to the south bronx at a very young age. after graduating high school la rock spent four years in vermont at castleton college where he earned varsity letters in basketball, but more importantly for the world of hip hop he became more and more enamored with music. on graduation he returned to new york and began working as a dj and as a social worker at the franklin armory mens shelter in the bronx. it was at the shelter that scott met kris parker and the duo formed boogie down productions. the rest, as they say, is history. roughly a year after the tragic shooting death of boogie down productions founder, dj and producer scott la rock b boy records and krs-one issued this special remix album, a man and his music (remixes from around the world). billed as a limited edition collectors classic the project was released in a limited run – briefly available in the 90s – and now after years of being unavailable reappears as a tribute to one of the genres early pioneers.

a fresh addition to the moodmusic roster but a longtime veteran in the house-scene, alexander maier aka dj all*star from stuttgart is well known from his earlier releases on buzzin fly, exun and criminal records. he began his career playing underground techno in south of germany but over the years became more and more influenced by detroit and chicago house. you can hear these influences on sahara in both the rain and river version. deep and reduced grooves with enough soul and atmosphere, yet fully functional for the floor, sahara rain kicks in with a heavy bass sequence building a perfect platform to be followed by the synththeme which hit s the peak hour perfectly. i see some hands going up here already… sahara river starts more housey, building a classy, low-slung huge groove with perculating synths and almost tribal feel to the drums. the modulating synths lifts the track to new heights with a break of superbly layered twisted pads before the drums kick back in in full effect. as this would not be enough we asked our thrusted chicago connection and alexs buddy, mazi aka audio soul project to remix sahara rain. if you consider people who s been in the biz for some time mazi is one of the warriors of the sound, never choosing the easy way but thrustfully following his true way of house music. and house it is, classic but cleverly updated to 2008 with a twist of so-cal thrown in for good measure. bouncey and jacking is the words which comes into mind when hearing this, excellent work and a another bomb for the hot months to come

support comes from alex from tokyo (innervisions), chloe, muallem (compost), tim paris, will saul and philip sherburne (lan muzik). the belgian power-trio mugwump have gained solid support from the likes of ewan pearson, ivan smagghe and ata among others in the recent years for their floor crunching sound on labels such as eskimo, hi-phen, suicide, crosstown rebels and brique rouge. >memory lane refund< was projected for moodmusic as a proud statement. building on a solid house basement, the original is influenced by early chicago and uk house with jacking beats and excellent synth workout from the belgian maestros. their own acid retraxion remix works out some more rolling beats and an evil bassline straight from chicago ala 1987. for remix duties alexander maier (buzzin fly/criminal) turned the original upside down and injected a funky, yet melodic dose of new school house in its best form. this rocks. sasse deliveres a serious sunday afternoon rocker with same flow as his recent work with kiki & nick chacona

cpu and dance musics polymath neil landstrumm share a love for classic bleep techno, hence landstrumm has brought to the table four superb reminders of the criminally short lived genre. with spine tingling melodies reminiscent of 808 state s best work, and sub-bass worthy of lfo s bass-bin shaking reputation. a death, a mexican and a mormon perfectly encapsulates not only landstrumms influences but also his deep seated love for bleep. a labour of love which the sheffield based imprint has been only all too happy to encourage and hopes will keep the genre alive for generations to come.
