joy adegoke und wim janssens aka joy wellboy sind seit jahren unzertrennlich, ein paar in leben und kunst. ihr zweites album wedding klingt so komplett und vielfŠltig, wie man sich ein popalbum 2015 nur wźnschen kann: songwriting trifft crooning, elektrobeat kuschelt mit chanson, es gibt minnegesang auf der tanzflŠche, herzzerrei§ende duette und engtanzballaden fźr die ewigkeit.

the unknown hei§t nicht nur der erste song, den sie fźr ihr gleichnamiges zweites album geschrieben hat, dillon thematisiert hier die instanz im leben, fźr die es keinen namen, keine beschreibung, keine grenzen gibt. das unbekannte kann alles sein: die sehnsucht, die liebe, der verlust, die vergŠnglichkeit, die angst oder das verlangen. passend zum cover-artwork von the unknown prŠsentieren sich die zwšlf neuen stźcke direkter, natźrlicher und freimźtiger: die texte sind viel abstrakter und offener, obwohl sie genauso persšnlich und introvertiert sind , sagt dillon źber die im mai bis november 2013 entstandenen songs. stźcke wie in silence oder 4ever sind bisweilen schwermźtig, sie verstršmen diese versunkenheit, die keineswegs immer als melancholisch diffamiert werden muss. wir alle leiden , sagt dillon, es ist jedoch wichtig, wie wir das leid verarbeiten .

ejeca carves out an energetic slab of audacious party house on ‘unloving’, resplendent with rolling beats and stabby chords, and topped off with dramatic strings and vocal chops. elsewhere on the ep, ejeca unleashes some 303 bassline action and dark vocals on ‘standard acid house track’, which thankfully rises well above anything standard! and on ‘crystal maze’, ejeca harks back to the darker dance energies that were a staple of the late 1980s uk acid house boom. wrapping up the ep, ‘iswhatis’ gets ever so slightly twisted with an orbiting synth hook and weighty stabs over a spirited rhythm section.

after a brief time away from releasing music in 2017 to refresh his ears, essential house artist argy is back with a bang in 2018, as this debut ep on play it say it proves. greek dj and producer argy has been a prolific talent over the last decade plus, releasing a variety of sounds under a number of different aliases. his given name has always been reserved for house and techno, which is classically informed but always infused with the sound of the future. it’s come on key labels like bedrock, bpitch, ibadan, and most recently the martinez brothers’ cuttin’ headz imprint, and has spawned four fantastic full lengths. those releases, along with his storytelling dj sets, have made the these days label boss a much loved and ever-present part of the global underground scene. the excellent title track the way of kings opens up the ep with seven standout minutes of surging house. slick, powerful kicks drive it along as expertly crafted synths bring real drama and tension up top. it’s a tasteful bit of hi-tech soul for the peak of the night and is as essential as the title suggests. switching up the mood is the vibrant los animales, which has a busier, afro tinged groove and tribal percussive energy. lithe synths dart about to add dynamism and movement as vocal chants get you on your toes and the whole thing is sure to make a huge impact in the club. last of all, move like a panther featuring the new yorker in berlin, elbee bad, shows another side to argy. it’s a perfectly raw house cut with plenty of jacking chicago spirit. the drums hit hard, the synths are trippy and the snares force you to move. add in a dark bassline and spoken word mantras and you have a real piece of explosive club dynamite. these are three typically inventive and well-executed tracks from argy that are stuffed with original ideas.
