mutant clan is the name of the new project from timo maas and santos. these boys have really come back with a bang, havent they? having been a fan of santos productions and sound, timo arranged for some studio time together, and the rest as they say.... >inside< is a real moody bitch. with its phat planetesq bassline (not a bad thing, im sure youll agree!), rolling drums and deep ass d base, its one hell of a groove. >outside < is definitely the older, more rebellious, troublesome brother: a darker affair that growls at you from its opening bars, sounds and efx thrown at you from out of darkness. it really is a wonderfully constructed track. once again, maas and santos (aka mutant clan) deliver the goods in the finest way possible and once again, dubfire and sci+tec bring you some of the finest techno around today. a true match made in heaven

groovebox ep is filled with some class a material for the raunchy dancefloor. first up there is into the club. this track is typical for channel x: it will blow off the roof in the club! as the title of the track already suggests, this is another one of channel xs lengthy journeys into nightlife extravaganzas. a wonderful fidgety bassline and a loop filled with loads of soulful vocal samples from strong male leads to sensitive female souls, this tune is both deep, touchful and destroying. the chainsaw effect session in the middle paves the way for more stomping tech-house business. no time to recover from this, because on the flip its straight onto the floor with wake up: a loop thats made of trillions of little cut-up effects, vocal bits and some straight four to the floor business. after a playful beginning the tune moves into an hypnotic piece of trippy techno only to be converted into a restless party anthem for the Überpeak-time. sick! perhaps there is some time to chill with the last of the three tracks that is against the wall. here it becomes clear what channel x are best at: to create dark, hard and moving electronic music with that special ingredient that is soul. this track is a perfect example: some frightening effects, lots of reverb on the creepy samples, but such a wonderfully harmonic sample that seems to shed light at the end of the never-ending afterhour. if there is a message to this music, it would be: you need to look hard, but there is always love. once again label boss oliver koletzki has picked up these two very talented producers very early upon their career and it has paid off: in one release being better than the one before

hot off the heels of onur Özers most excellent mind melt album kasmir, released october of 2007, comes the reinterpretations on vakants vr division. wonderfully thought out, vr handles remixes exclusively leaving vakant itself pure to its artists. this constellation leaves everyone free to the corruption of their fancy, allowing the artists to choose their own remixers. with onur, finding willing interpreters is not a difficult task and the heavy of the heavies representing the light and dark sides of the force are here on vr04. on the a side loco dice, aka tunisian born yassine ben achour, takes onurs instrument laden >eclipse< and puts it through the treatment. what comes out the other end is popping state-of-the-art tech house with onurs depth and loco dices spontaneous flow. on the flip things get serious. jens zimmermann , the deep, deep, freak out master hailing from frankfurt, contributes his own spin on >sahara<

tom neville and gower ramsay come together to on the latest release from the phenomenal love minus zero. these two peak time tech house & techno tracks leave you wondering why there arent more tracks out there this good! mechanical ballet has a wonderfully techy groove with synth sounds of old. imagine dark rooms, red lights and sexy people and youve got the right idea.

the skull returns to kindisch with four impeccably sultry and leftfield dancefloor cuts. >must have back< is silky, chicaning mix of ice-cool male vocals and slick, vacuum-packed percussion that will prove devastating to discerning dancefloors, while >lalalala< is a raw, spaced-out house jam that serves up spry, bouncy congas, wobbly bass and clipped hi-hat patterns with no small amount of dubby echo and delay. >forever ever< is a wonderfully trippy slice of minimal techno, a heady bass and percussion workout haunted by the blue, smoky ghosts of jazz keys. be careful - you may well find yourself hypnotized forever ever.the mood is less abstract but no less intense or inviting for deep, reverb-laden closing track >lovesong<. an insistent kick-drum and mind-bending fx make this prime dancefloor material, but the mood of the track is more complex - wistful, pining, mindful of the past, expectant of the future - a lovesong through and through.

for flash lützenkirchen delivers three very classy dancefloor burners. first up there is >enter the moonlight<, an enchanting piece of thumping peak time business. a big bass, pumping beats and some great oriental sounds combined with far-out effects create a unique atmosphere. modern styles meet oldskool feelings! >on the shore< is even more oldskool than that. the fat and wobbly bassline pushes the track forward and creates the perfect antagonism to the warm effects and clicky minimal beats. the highlight - however - is the wonderfully written melodic piano piece that turns this track from wicked into wow! beautiful and tough, oldskool and fresh, slick and funky - all at the same time. this one is going to be huge. listen for yourself! at last there is >pokemon companion<, a more direct and solid piece of minimal tech. a drum’n bass like powerfully grumbling bass, and yet another memorable synthie pattern that seems to grow out of the buzzing loop like a spring flower out of wet grass - naturally and wonderful!

for their latest effort, einzelkind aka arno völker and miguel ayala teamed up with douglas greed for ice 1656 ep. in a1 >la belle<, a rolling, woodblock rhythm sets the scene for the abstracted keyboard tones which cluster around the track’s middle, cranking up the drama and throwing the bottom-line bass throb sharp relief, ahead of the dirty, flanged synth line that’ll gleefully force any dancefloor into submission. >la belle<’s beauty lies in its simplicity - einzelkind and douglas greed use a small, well-chosen assortment of percussive and melodic elements to create a wonderfully tense, propulsive club track with not even a hint of flab about it. for b1 >ed the optician<, the trio inject a bit of funk into proceedings. it’s a slinky little number, characterised by an expanding and contracting, analogue-sounding synth-line, woodwind samples and a bouncy, morse-code bassline, together making for a warm, groving track that will work well in warm-up and peak-time sets alike, not to mention at home. b2 >squirls in a bathtub< is a similarly supple, funk-fuelled cut, driven by haunting, almost animal-like noises and which mutate into wiry acid lines while the aquatic bass drum, hissing shaker and press

this >sources ep< shows exactly where matthews heads at as a producer and dj, wonderfully deep groove-lead modern house with his own unique twist. being released on dinkys highly-desired horizontal imprint, its the first of a run of releases with another ep soon to be released on diamonds & pearls, a label whose small roster includes luciano, ricardo villalobos and henrik schwarz. >double exposure< on the sources ep can also be heard as the penultimate track on dinkys fantastic new get lost 3 mix for crosstown rebels, its safe to say shes a big fan, but then again its hard to find anyone who knows matthew personally or through his music that isnt a fan. 2008 could be a big year for the unlikely but highly talented star

producer holger behn aka h.o.s.h. is back on stil vor talent with his third release and second 12 inch on oliver koletzkis imprint. his latest two tracks are all about house music, while always keeping a strict eye on the dancefloor. it starts with the tech-house anthem >grünanlage<, the name of a sunday afternoon open air in h.o.s.h.s hometown hamburg that he co-organises. the tune features a great clappy snare and some wonderful balearic guitar melodies, which swing over the fast loop. this tune is going to put a smile on your face wherever you are. on the flip there is >blaupause<, which translates as blueprint and is a dreamy housy pusher that keeps grooving with its synthie-stabs and warm bassline. later in the track h.o.s.h. adds an oldschool piano that pushes the track into another state with its drifting melody. it reminds us of so very many great rave moments. however, h.o.s.h. never gives in to the temptation of drifting off into cheese, stays cool at any given moment and keeps the seal of quality for his music very high. >blaupause< is a wonderful summery teaser that never explodes, but keeps imploding! h.o.s.h. once again does what he does best: delivering two wonderfully melodic tracks that fluctuate perfectly between house and techno. just the way we like it

sunburst offers layers of eerie, whispered vocals wrapped around a dark and menacing chord pattern. as the track develops though, the chords open out to bring light to the dancefloor and dramatically change the mood into something wonderfully uplifting. marc also offers a reduced version of >sunburst< as a dub to complete the trip. the alexkid remix brings some proper old school house vibes to the mix. alex and his 909 go to work on marcs stabs to devastating effect. all hands are destined to reach for the lasers when the bass-line drops, and just in time for the summer. parisian alexkid works his magic for the remix. alexkid has in the past remixed everyone from astor piazzolla to george michael, provided serious dancefloor fuel with tracks like >dont hide it< and a number of critically acclaimed albums for the fantastic french label f communications

repeat orchestra (aka stefan schwander aka antonelli electr., rhythm maker, one half of the duo swimmingpool as well as being behind >a rocket in dub<) returns with another 12inch in his purest form of his electronic soul, based around live-performances, orchestral instrumentations and deep house. in a post-modern manner, the >asafa chords ep< operates differently as opposed to the standard sampling clichès of standard house-tunes that we hear on each and every street corner these days. the two pieces follow a minimal yet above the norm musical approach, with tricky and advanced rhythms and a strong groove that lets the listener dive deeper into the world of a one-man-band, who likes to express his version of afro-futuristic housemusic by bringing deep chords, live-played strings and lots more of his personal flavour into his production. . the result is a warm and wonderfully musical expression on the dancefloor that will guaranteed stand out from the rest.

this 12 kicks off with jam 2 tha mother,a track that has been doing the rounds for a while as a westpark unit track apparently. its a fairly nice hiphouse bumper.its all about miles though. the looped piano sample works wonderfully well with the straight deep disco beats. and while the original is good, the soulphiction remix is the icing on the cake. they give it a certain industrial/techy edge, and make the sample stand out even better. add to that some dope detroit beatdown bass licks and beats, and you ve got yourself a catchy tune

kanda bongo man is a giant of african music and the artist credited with introducing john peel to african music. his fans number vampire weekend (cape cod kwassa kwassa), paul simon and john peel. all the tracks were recorded for joe boyds hannibal records between 1984-91, an era we can look back on today as the high watermark of parisian soukous, and showcase a band at the height of their powers. behind his soaring voice kanda employed diblo dibala and rigo star, two lead guitarists who are widely considered as the best soukous guitarists who ever lived. diblo was recruited from the band led by the legendary franco whilst rigos scorching licks graced albums by paul simon and it was their twinning that gave kandas music a wonderfully joyous, ringing quality. they both feature extensively on the -king of kwassa kwassa-.
