some believe that the environment in which you make music – from the studio space, to the location itself – has a profound effect on the creative process. immerse yourself in the world around you, the theory goes, and it will shape the music you make. listen to gorthleck, the third album from veteran downtempo alchemists benjamin smith and paul ‘mudd’ murphy, and you can almost visualize the craggy, windswept and breathtakingly beautiful environment in which it was made.
smith & mudd are back in fine style on claremont 56, following up their excellent lp with this great double header! >sauna love< is the lead track, an uptempo, string laden boogie house affair with great vibes, bass, strings and punchy percussion all rolling along into the sunshine. on side-b >the surveyor< is a great piece of otherworldly electronic music, coming on like some weird cough medicine induced dream. the bass pulses along with mystery dialogue, light key flourishes and an intent that is delivered about 5 minutes in when the kick drops and the whole thing shifts into a latenight, alt disco bomb.
smith & mudd follow their second album, le suivant with something that goes a bit darker. side a is a chuggy affair where the beats drive a bit harder than their usual tracks but the lushness and the bass groove are still there. a beautiful electric violin solo takes the second half to a different place. side b is a deep bass journey that sounds like jean luc ponty and terry callier combined with a but of led zep. fantastic stuff. check
claremont 56 releases its first smith & mudd 7inch in a limited edition of series of four (a-d). side a sees smith & mudd at their best, a pure feel good track that puts you in a life affirming mood and gets the feet moving. side b takes it a bit deeper with the acoustic guitar backing a wooden flute solo. these are extremely limited and these are 250 copies only for the world. breath taking!
side a sees another balearic sunshine adventure from smith & mudd. floating acoustic guitar melodies ride along the head nodding groove and take you to a place far better than the english summer. side b sees one of the best idjut boy remixes ever heard. an epic 22 minute journey that pulls you in and out of your cosmic consciousness. a blissful gem of a track. this is sure to become a classic.
