los angeles producer sweatson klank builds his productions as if they were films. developing a story from start to finish. stylistically. fine lines his debut full length for friends of friends. picks up where his 2017 then i was me’ ep left off. melding forward thinking hip hop and electronics as a back drop for a soulful and sultry journey through a tumultuous love affair. loss of self. and the dark empty spaces in our minds. the songs on fine lines sit in a space occupied by hip hop. future r&b and house. yet the record cleverly transcends any single genre. while much of the production is hard hitting. the album manages to walk a tightrope between heartache and swagger. a meticulous fine line that weaves itself like a thread throughout. sweatson klank enlists a number of features on the album including newcomers ana calvo. sarah saldivia. and annie bass as well as past collaborator. montreal producer ango.
the remarkable thing about belp s new album is its two-dimensional function. it works both on a loud and a quiet volume. some tracks would go down well as a club track. like opener travelling thru galaxies . this track brings back memories of the best work released on the hyperdub label. with it s fine combination of synths and irresistible. dubby beats. elsewhere. off ending might start off as dancehall-but-not-quite dancehall track but when half way the synths kick in they change the feeling of the track to a more cerebral level.
this is a masterpiece. beautiful. golden-era soul written by leon sylvers iii. produced by jerry butler and keg johnson. . the sylvers were a family from los angeles who were very successful during the 70’s and into the early 80’s. with chart hits – deep into pop-disco territory by then! – including ‘boogie fever’. ‘hot line’ and ‘high school dance’. this is the groups second album. from 1973. and is one of their strongest. opening with the awesome mid-tempo ‘we can make it if we try’ the record moves through funk. boogie and deep soul moods. finishing on a hazy. acapella version of the beatles ‘yesterday’.

a great compilation can open the gate to another world. who knew that some of the most exciting afro-funk records of all time were actually made in the small west african country of benin? once analog africa released the first african scream contest in 2008. the proof was there for all to hear. gut-busting yelps. lethally welldrilled horn sections and irresistibly insistent rhythms added up to a record that took you into its own space with the same electrifying sureness as any favourite blues or soul or funk or punk sampler you might care to mention.
ten years on. intrepid crate-digger samy ben redjeb unveils a new treasuretrove of vodoun-inspired afrobeat heavy funk crossover greatness. right from the laceratingly raw guitar fanfare which kicks off les sympathics’ pile-driving opener. it’s clear that african scream contest ii is going to be every bit as joyous a voyage of discovery as its predecessor. and just as you’re trying to get off the canvas after this one-punch knock out. an irresistible afro-ska romp with a more than subliminal echo of the batman theme puts you right back there. ignace de souza and the melody aces’ “asaw fofor- would’ve been a killer instrumental but once you’ve factored in the improbably-rich-to-the-point-of-being-nat-king-cole-influenced lead vocal. it’s a total revelation.

jah mel sees himself as a musical bridge between the original reggae sound & the dancehall sound of today. representing what he calls the real dancehall revolution. merging the spirituality of the old school & the energy of the new school. “guiding star” and “stand up to it” are the perfect examples to overstand this definition. both song were produced by roydale anderson aka andy s. “guding star” will definitely give you thrills if you are into deep synth and heavy digital rhythm. while the superb piano notes will warm you in the analog style. beware of “guiding star” dub version called “guidance (dance mix)” that will break any bunker. “stand up to it” rhythm is an adaptation of one of the most classic jamaican riddim called “heavenless”. you will never know this riddim like before. this version takes the riddim to another level. a positive song with a bionic nuclear bomb dubwise! play it loud. jah is our guiding star!

tony clarke did his first recording in new york in 1971 at hugh hendricks recording studio called -righteous man- of which he played both bass and lead guitar. tony clarke decided to write the song “going home” to reference the roots of his music. in those days and even now good reggae music that was being recorded in the united states was not receiving the approbation from home because. in jamaica they felt that the best reggae music could only come from and be created in jamaica to substantiate the true feeling of the genre. so he decided to go back to jamaica and record “going home” at harry j studio with sylvan morris as engineer. he also recorded the cover version to “hey little girl” originally done by dee clark. for this 12 vinyl edition. the artwork was done with a vintage photo of tony clarke in front of his house at waterhouse and extended liner notes on the back cover.
