in the 80s, a nigerian dj named hycentto junior was notorious for making onitsha people dance on his grooves. soon, influenced by u.s hip-hop artists, he began rapping on top of the music he played. his eccentric style drew the attention of the biggest name, and the famous nkono teles decided to work with him on his next lp, mama groove. their project was released in 1991. due to unfortunate circumstances, the number of copies available was really low, making it very hard to find. more than 25 years later, working for a motor company, hycentto met online with french music passionate collective “lorem ipsum”, that had randomly found his mama groove lp. the result is a reissue auditioning all the 1991 mama groove’s tracks and two bonuses selected from his first 1984 album, at a party last night. the unique variety of sounds and genres, covering electro hip-hop, digi reggae and disco-funk, will carry you from poolside to late night dancefloors!

skinny pelembe corrals together a cast of talented friends for his new ep. it’s his most ambitious release to date, boasting a different group or artist featuring on each of its tracks, each of them an act he’s met through music or through linking with brownswood’s celebrated talent development programme future bubblers two years ago. across its four entries, he bridges hip-hop, psych-rock and jazz-influenced tangents, cutting out a diverse cross-section of the city’s music scene. it’s a document of the connections he’s made as an artist, and is the most collaborative project he’s worked on so far. the title of the ep comes from some advice which skinny noted to himself on an old notebook. each of its songs started as a rough idea which was then fleshed out and re-imagined with his collaborators.

trio ternura (or tenderness trio) consisted of two sisters, jussara, jurema and their brother robson. their father, umberto silva was a revered brazilian songwriter and recording artist who introduced his children to the music world at a very young age. after performing some songs on broadcast television and at festivals early on, their father umberto and brother, beto scala wrote a gira for the trio to record. the song is a tribute to nature, spirituality and mindfulness. the hommage is made through a form of cantico (chant) or saudação (salutation), aimed at invoking an orisha named oxossi. otherwise known as saints, orishas are the deities worshiped in the afro-brazilian religion of candomblé. african religion and culture have had an undeniable impact in brazil, especially in music and on artists with african roots as its rituals were often accompanied by music comprising highly percussive drumming. as a result, a gira, an homage to a candomblé deity recorded in 1973 involves mesmerizing polyrhythms from the very first few bars and throughout, followed by the sisters soaring vocals and impeccable instrumentation. its a song that they can really identify with, in their own words it has the dancing, the expression, the lyrics and musical relaxation - something very brazilian. originally released on polydor in brazil, fully licensed and remastered from the tapes - mel012 comes forth in its 7-inch original vinyl format and digitally, b/w trio ternuras stunning version of gato barbieris last tango in paris and is accompanied by the first bilingual melozine.

super dope compilation of vol 1, vol 2 and unreleased tracks by the somalian dur-dur band. the funk is strong on this.. heavy productions, lo-fi, tape hiss all over the recordings but still so much definition and dynamics. big tip!

a surefire afro-funk classic, long treasured by collectors across the globe, the fantastic self-titled lp from ghanaian singing/percussion sensation sidiku buari nevertheless remains a criminally hard-to find gem. we re honoured to present the first ever officially licensed vinyl reissue of this undoubted masterpiece. limited to just 500 copies. originally released on rca in 1975, this is, quite simply, a ridiculous record. this super-rare album boasts an all-star cast of top funk instrumentalists playing alongside buari as he blends heavy african rhythms with american soul-funk grooves. the arrangements and the playing are incredibly tight and the album is stacked with killer tracks including advice from father (sampled brilliantly by kenny dope) and ku ka maria, with its intense, neck-snapping breaks and funky drumming from legend bernard pretty purdie. purdie is in the pocket for the entirety of this stunning lp the drumming is just straight out of hand so varied yet so precise. it s not hard to fathom why these tracks have always been huge on the b-boy/breaking scene. other standouts include the wonderful disco-tinged afro monsters karam bani and -iro le pa plus the cool laidback groove of them yebtheyet. with access to the original analogue tape transfers, simon francis stellar mastering elevates the sound throughout and, as ever, it has been pressed at a reassuringly weighty 180g.

bomb the bass is the alias from the english electronic music producer tim simenon. he released his debut album into the dragon in 1988. it s an intriguing trip through electro, acid-house and hip-hop music. on the album you ll find his breakthrough hit -beat dis-, which became popular in the underground and club circuit. it feels like you re listening to a radio broadcast show, including intro skits in a melting pot of styles. a true classic in the history of using samples in music. bomb the bass were one of the first acts to bring sample-based music and scratching to a mainstream audience.
