sometime in 2005, a lone box of master tapes escaped an estate sale and made its way through a network of collectors, record dealers, and junkers into the hands of leading ohio soul expert dante carfagna. dante identified the tapes as a clutch of lost masters related to columbus, ohio s mysterious prix label, an imprint already being considered for its slot among the numero group s flagship eccentric soul series. thediscovery of those tapes - containing finished but unissued masters and a batch of raw demo tracks - offered the ongoing prix project a jolting shot in the arm. a bit of research turned up prix label owner george beter, and combining beter s input with that of the few prix artists and songwriters still around, most of this generally unlabeled material was identified. all it took was an endless series of phone calls and letters and two fields trips in columbus.

chicagos richard pegue was one of the most intriguing figures to come out of the chicago soul scene in the 1960s and 1970s. raised during the citys fertile doo-wop era, pegue immersed himself in music immediately. he cut his chops as a mobile dj, record store clerk and recording artist before stepping into the booth as one of chicagos most enduring radio personalities to grace the citys airwaves. the nickel and penny labels featured in this compilation are twin sides of the same eccentric coin, pegue himself.

christmas compilations are often cheesy, smooth selections of bland, overplayed seasonal pabulum. even announced with funky or groovy, it often leaves listeners disappointed. so were jan and tobias. first, they were bugged out by the all filler-no-killer compilations. the second and more important reason was that of the considerable number of proper rare groove tunes recorded and released in the 1960s and 70s, many languished in obscurity. the pair started a collaboration to create a funky-soul xmas compilation.
the lp sleeve contains scans of all 45rpm single labels as well as liner notes to each song. the vinyl comes with a gatefold cover and is limited to 500 copies.

though classically trained, arthur russells major contributions to the music world is in the dance genre. despite the fact that his pioneering work in the late 70s and on through the 80s was only quietly acknowledged at the time, his long-term impact is best described as formidable. russell died in 1992, but his art lives on and his influence is still felt in the world of dance music and beyond. his innovative, leftfield dance records flew way ahead of what people were used to hearing at the time, due in part to his involvement in new yorks downtown avant-garde music scene.
