willie hutch wrote huge soul hits in the 60s and 70s (co-writing “i’ll be there” for the jackson 5) and released sixteen motown, whitfield and independent label solo releases between 1969 and 2002. from his period with norman whifield’s label through warner brother in 1978/79 he is best known for “easy does it”. arranged by gene page, it was previously issued only on 7” as a b-side to “come on and dance with me”, original copies now exchanging hands for large sums.

the 2nd release on 45 live records, and we welcome the amazing talent christian madden into the family. christian released his lp “the wrecking place” digitally in january 2017 that these 2 tracks are taken from and which most definitely deserved to be pressed onto vinyl.

as featured on feeling nice vol.4, we thought it is well worth to re-release frederick knight s -steppin down- on 45 too. even better, the b-side -heart complication- is a monster deep-soul track which many of you may have not heard yet. we here at tramp re-release good music, whether it is rare or not. this one is indeed rare so get your hands on it before all copies are gone.

a solid two sider for your soul box from the old town vaults, say it with feeling is a great mid tempo soul track which i have used as a warm up track for many years and had remained popular on the soul circuit as well. for me the real magic happens on the flip. conscience is a haunting mid tempo off-kilter number, memorable in the extreme, challenging to work it into a set, a charming, fascinating record, no wonder it was a huge popcorn spin in belgium.

it’s difficult to describe the feeling when you know you’ve heard something that eclipses the mighty mr bird & greg blackman’s ramrock blue modern soul 12” classic ‘over again’ featuring the now legendary tom moulton remix. but many of you are going to experience that feeling and your feedback is going to reflect that moment when that single musical droplet of universal joyful harmony hits your hippocampus and you dissolve with happiness.

the late 1960s / early 70s brought about a change in sound for many gospel groups. producers and label heads at abc peacock recognized that the traditional sound of gospel needed to be updated to appeal to the younger market. the groups started to incorporate elements of soul and funk with arrangements influenced by the r&b records of the time. this compilation presents 13 striking examples of this seismic shift in black music by some of the greatest groups in gospel music’s rich heritage.

mark rae is the man behind one of the key uk music movements of the last 25 years. as a founder of the shop fat city records and the label grand central, mark worked with some of the worlds biggest artists going on to earn several platinumm discs with his work as one half of the highly respected production duo rae & christian. this project is a worlds first autobiography and album, the release is packaged as a gatefold 10 inch which opens out to the book held within. the 40 000 word book covers the author mark rae s journey through the music industry. it follows the creation and dissolution of fat city and grand central records, rae & christian and yesking. the underground club scenes of manchester, gang wars, success, failure, working with bobby womack, jay z and the pharcyde. the project has been supported by whosampled, dj magazine, vice and the tate modern. the artwork is exceptional featuring an historical montage throughout the inner gatefold sleeve. the music features guest vocals from tony d who was a big influence in the original grand central records sound, soul king pete simpson, multi instrumentalist shawn lee and kate rogers.

it’s hard to get a handle on nigerian musicians nash dodoo, charlie cuul and jonas caulley. in 1980 they released an album of face-melting gospel boogie as the bml chapels. and in the same year, calling themselves the beta yama group, they put out free love, a belated love letter to san francisco’s summer of love and an album altogether focused on more worldly concerns. free love is a small slice of haight-ashbury transported to the polygram studios in lagos. ‘te revoir’ is mamas and papas jamming with sergeant pepper’s beatles. ‘free love’ offers a respectful nod towards je t’aime-era serge gainsbourg. sure, ‘revolution’ gets hard and funky and ‘rain’ flirts briefly with a calypso reggae sound, but the majority of the album is cheesecloth and flowers in your hair. insanely rare – and worth buying for the freaky cover art alone – free love is a funky, reverb heavy call for love, peace and sweet, sweet loving. what more could you want from an album?

produced and recorded in 1965 during a time when chicago soul was one of the most influential sounds in r&b.the dontells entered the studio and cut two tracks that put that sound on full display. the session was led by producer calvin carter, world famous arranger johnny pate-along with the cities top musicians. these tracks were never released and have only been heard by a few people until now. the a side “move on down the line” grabs you from the first second the needle drops. a mid tempo love song with a trademark arrangement from pate and a vocal melody and approach in the style of chicago’s king of soul, curtis mayfield. “there goes a fool” is the b side and is a reminder why the dontells were one of the best groups out of the windy city. another brilliant production with a top notch arrangement. horns, strings, a swinging backbeat and that signature chicago vocal sound lead by the sweet harmonies of nate, leroy, manuel & ralph. this is no doubt a 60’s soul classic in 2017!

a fantastic and rare soul-jazz album recorded in adelaide (australia) in 1976. originally pressed and released on crest records and fully licensed by the hot casa team to reissue it on a deluxe 180g vinyl. . sue barker is a jazz singer from the 70s – and one who isn t afraid of picking up a bit of soul. most of the album features covers from duke ellington to marvin gaye, curtis mayfield or even james brown!

going even further into the tape archives of robbie m we find ourselves with “friend”. this time it’s going to be a late night affair, as robbie smothers you with those smooth vocals as only he can. rock island s ram music direct to you from the midwest. robbie is currently working on his autobiography film project, but had the time to bless us with a new music video for “thanks for the love” featured on this lp.

fabio fabor is a mysterious composer and musician who wrote mostly operas, symphonies and chamber music, but also experimental and electronic library music, the latter being the case of this release: short tracks aiming to accompany radio and tv shows, orchestral pop a la bacharach, space age pop, hints of bossa and beat from the previous decade. originally published by the legendary seri e usignolo, a sub-label of fonit, this hard-to-find title is finally available again thanks to schema records

fonits b 85, part of the legendary serie usignolo, which bears the signatures of the mysterious coscia (perhaps a moniker of accordionist gianni?) and formini, is another cult library music release: an orchestral pop record whose tracks are curiously recommended to accompany viewings of vast parks, footage of agriculture, ads, moving crowds and congested traffic jams, american working-class districts with hilarious titles such as dayda, schizzo, palmas, murlak (which casts an incredible fuzz guitar), bronx and ciresa facaud. in two words: a must!

the revised brotherhood recorded their one and only 45rpm single tragedy b/w those things in 1971. the band was founded by organist john hurd who was taught music many days a week by roger troutman. the band released a full length album shortly after the 45 but it did not take long and they split up. thanks to john hurd all of you get the chance to enjoy these songs on 45rpm single, more than 40 years after its initial release.

it is more than astounding why this tune hasn t been resurrected for an ad for one of the many chain of fast food outlets. although the original 45 is neither superrare nor expensive, finger licken chicken is certainly one of the finest examples of philly funk. it was originally released on leoso but was re-released on the yew label. both sides were written by sonny fulton who teamed up with sandra for a killer r&b-ish funk cut on the flip titled back breaking love

this is the long-overdue debut album by hawaiian born soul singer jesse morgan, member of the legendary mopptopps. the album was scheduled for release in 1977 but remained in the can for almost 40 years. ten modern soul masterpieces on one album - something you rarely find!

ok, we have to admit that we could not resist to include -chances are your dance is mine on our latest feeling nice 3 compilation album before re-releasing it on 7inch. despite the fact that the original 45 is already quite in demand in collector circles we are sure that there are many people out there who have never heard about rickey andrews. much more important for us is that this re-issue is a welcome opportunity for the not-so-rich music lovers who do not spend hundred of $$$ for vintage vinyl records. thats our mission and that s what rickey andrews and his music definitely deserves.

australia’s deep street soul, since signing to freestyle records in 2008, have earned a reputation as being right at the grittiest end of the hard funk scene who made a big impact from the outset - with even the mc5’s wayne kramer saying that their version of kick out the jams “... is the greatest version of the song ever recorded!”. from their debut self titled instrumental long player, to the 2011 follow up look out, watch out (and the addition of vocalist mighty may johnston) this band have grown, matured and honed thier songwriting skills, as well as maintaining their rare ability to really capture the essence of the original raw funk & soul artists that inspire them. 2016 sees them return with this quite spectacular new collection. whilst the diamond hard, driving grooves remain undiminished, there is also no doubt that the bands song writing has developed to an equally assured level. case in point is souls come alive - from monique boggia’s wurlitzer electric piano intro, the blistering horns and may johnson’s simply exemplary singing - the songs instant appeal will be lost on no one with an ear for genuine organic soul music. come alive also features guest vocalists joshua tavares and kylie auldist - come alive is deep street souls finest work - no if’s, but’s or maybe’s. it s a done deal.
