the baker’s dozen kick off in 2017 with its 5th volume. baker’s dozen, an exclusive vinyl series that shines a light on the best minds of instrumental hip-hop, ambient, and electronic music offers each artist carte blanche to capture their signature sound. this edition features los angeles based producer daedelus. every volume features one artist and twelve tracks, and comes equipped with a 5x7” postcard insert that features a photo of the artist’s workspace along with the equipment used in their musicmaking process as well as a personal narrative of how they got into beat making in the first place. visually cohesive and packaged with the utmost attention to detail, baker’s dozen is a series that speaks up for artists whose craft renders voices superfluous, whose instrumentals alone suffice to make a statement.

daedelus darf man gerne als musikalischen tausendsassa beschreiben, seit seinem debüt 2002 releaste er auf unzähligen renommierten labels wie warp, ninja tune, epitaph, def jux, stones throw, brainfeeder oder magical properties. alfred darlington alias daedelus meldet sich nun mit seinem brandneuen album auf dem flying lotus label brainfeeder zurück. das album beschäftigt sich mit dem krimkrieg zwischen 1853-1856, wurde aber bereits vor der aktuellen krise in der ukraine aufgenommen. mit -the light brigade- gelingt daedelus ein musikalisches wechselspiel aus elektronischen klängen, melancholischen vocals und eindringlichen dunklen sounds.

there is music that is made from the outside looking in. the textures are vibrant and the beats bang, but there is a hollow radiance at the core. it is pantomime. then there is los angeles alfred darlington aka daedelus, who has released a dozen albums in a dozen years straddling countless sub-genres. they are united by his insistence on letting his emotions guide the blueprint. if you have listened to his music, you understand. there is a balance between the direct and the obtuse that cant be articulated in words. this is part of the subtext for drown out, daedelus most elegiac album. his debut for anticon is a heart-on-sleeve meditation devoted to loss, coded language, and the maddening failures of communication. and yet you can still bob your head to it.

sixth episode in the all city los angeles series featuring the talents of daedelus (ninjatune / plug research) and fresh beat rocker, teebs .... this is shaping up to be one heck of a series!

the main track on the 12inch version is touchtone, which features the rapping talents of paperboy and taz. jimmy edgar strips out the originals psych rock drones and takes it into slowjam territory. kypski speeds things up and neptunes it all to the max. thavius beck slathers the drums in reverb and manages to double up tempos, throw in arcade symphonies and make a miniature epic. also included is far weathered friends which is the death sets take on the daedelus original - a cover version which kicks out the jams whilst channelling the pixies. a short, ecstatic blast, bizarrely it emphasises the melodic strength of the original. not content with one complete rework, the death set lso come up with an electro mix of the original.

daedelus links up with michael johnson for the kind of happy song/sad vocals mash down which alfred darlington learnt from listening to too much brazilian music. this, however, is not bossa. drawing on bits of italian disco, twisted trance, french house and more than a smattering of early 80s english new romanticism its the kind of glorious, upliftingly sad number for which sweet indiscretions were invented. the epic nature of this song is sure to make this a daedelus anthem

second chapter in the af voiceless series. the label run by pervert keeps on broadening its own catalogue by adding artists committed to the underground electronic cause. this ep is a 5-track new voyage through analogue-crafted soundscapes, acid-injected breaks, thudding bass lines, warm and intricate melodies...the sheerest voice for the voiceless. af005y introduces new members to the family as houston-based daed (ian lambert), who displays his ability to create a perfect acid-glitched called pulse lunar . thus, smiley moon is above all a glimpse into the analogue world of the well-known rolando simmons, proving himself he s one of the brightest electronic artists of the moment. sheffield based dave forrester (techdiff) twists the modular in jamuary with a killer aphexian/jenkinson temper. longing raving days are depicted in quest with an evocative electro halo by the hand of the irish producer cignol. last but not least, smoke , an acid junglist and braindance orgy signed by gareth clarke, known for his previous works on canada s sublight records (venetian snares, bill laswell) and lovelove records. limited and handnumbered as usual.
