dan stielow mortazavi has an outer edged family background and a long testament in music starting in his teens with his first recorded project the product that was self released to cassette back in 1983. three decades later it saw a vinyl release on the dark entries label. the debut spite cathedral lp is made with his long-time musical partner karsten svendsen (to feed on others, hinsidan, ate23) and is released with a free bonus 7” on bodies on july 2nd. ultra minimalism streaming from the darkest of places still with a presence of a cold, cold love. with sparse elements they create dramatic scenery. industrial beats backed with something that sounds like hostage jazz and rock drummers fused with the loneliest of themes, epic at times and oh so broken at others. touching topics of man’s inhumanity, paranoid misinterpretations, the fragility of the mind, sex and broken homes without mouthing a single word.
support for my life at 45 part 1 came from huey morgan and craig charles on bbc 6music the second instalment of dr rubbefunk s my life at 45 series. canvas cathedral on the a-side is a jazzy all-instrumental affair that will have you head-nodding like nobody s business. over uptempo hip-hop flavoured beats reminiscent of early 90s golden era hip hop, chopped and looped riffs from sax man ben castle give way to rolling melodies and rapid fire solos. on the flip, unstoppable gospel powerhouse izo fitzroy is here, flexing her soulful tones over one of the most elastic basslines ever pressed on wax. underpinned by signature laidback drums that groove like a classic rhythm section of yesteryear, tasteful guitars and chiming electric piano weave their way between izo s lyrics and, bingo! that s a little blahzay right there! always keen to give the djs a bonus, the good doctor even squeezes some canvas beats onto the 7- for good measure.
damon eliza palermo returns to lovers rock with cathedral, an ep of inky, shadowy atmospheres. opening with the stunning title track, palermo summons a hi-def miasma of gongs and synths, searching and incantatory. congquin rumbles through a tar pit of groaning static and radio interference, while karangahape road floats through 5+ minutes of undulating sighs. finally cathedral gets reworked for the dance floor with an extended, exuberant techno meltdown.
‘sound of palladio’ is the first in a four part series of limited 12- pressed to 180g coloured vinyl, with a single piece of cover artwork commissioned from italian artist nerog spanning throughout the series. never ready records’ inaugural release sees venetian techno & bass house experimentalist munstac veer between the echoing sub bass chambers and angular staccato momentum of “the cathedral” to the more drawn out drum rolls and flutter of “the theatre”. along the way, east london’s spatial helms a mighty 132 bpm jungle break refix of “the cathedral” whipping up that trademark hectic fervor the infrasonics label boss has previously delivered on the likes of “wncl & stillcold”
