aos’ boundless love for music is apparent in everything she does. as a producer, a dj, and an event organizer with seattle’s secondnature and tuf collectives, kayla waldorf’s vision eschews traditional categories and genre boxes in favor of an ecstatic spontaneity. her dj sets are well known for their playful energy and narrative threading between many different styles. violent light is aos’ first offering on secondnature’s own label, and it captures this playful essence. the title track’s stomping groove (complete with rave whistle) sets the tone, while lullaby and what/why move into headier territory composed of dusty synths stabs and clouds of vocal effects. finally, secondnature’s own fugal delivers a remix that flips what/why into a rolling depth charge.

gene hunt is one of the few producers from the original wave of trax records signees that still flies the flag for chicago house with as much gusto as when he started. this is his second trip out on inner shift music, and it finds the us house veteran on impeccable form. -kayla dream- is a light, airy jacker defined by amorphous synth washes that match the mellow mood of the label. -distant voyage- is a truly standout track though, dealing in crooked rhythmic structures and channelling the techno side of hunt s muse. -open up your eyes- maintains the introspective mood, but this time welcomes some soulful vocal turns into the adventurous, machine-powered landscape.

fabe has become an integral part of the infuse label, with his square town story ep and ho do ri collaboration picking up various plaudits. as i skipped the gym ep kicks off with shaped like kayla , continuing the producers preference for a mind melting bass line flecks of acid and tripped out vocal snippets add a wigged out feel. who is the drummer jacks things up with swung percussion whilst navigate takes a broken beat direction. vinyl only!
