die form is a french post-industrial and electronic band formed in 1977-1978. the name die form means (the) form/shape in german and is a play on the english homonym deformed and on the french homonym difforme (deformed). die form is the primary project of electronic musician and multimedia artist philippe fichot. he began by recording a number of experimental cassette releases in the late 1970s and formed the bain total label to release these early cassettes, as well as various side projects such as krylon hertz, camera obscura, eva-johanna reichstag, hurt and fine automatic.

nagamatzu were the british duo of andrew lagowski (seti, legion, terror against terror) on synths, guitar, and programming and stephen jarvis (pure motorised instinct, terraform) on synths and bass. formed in 1982 after messing around with old tape machines and drum boxes, making numerous contributions to international compilations and erratically releasing their own cassettes. their name comes from a character in jg ballard‘s “atrocity exhibition” and their music reflects his influence. nagamatzu self-released their debut cassette “shatter days” in 1983 after messing around with old tape machines, drum boxes and effects.

executive slacks began in the hot, humid summer of 1980 philadelphia by matt marello, john young and albert ganss, three bored, broke, anxious art students. starting out with performance art in subways, they soon took their angst-ridden act to galleries and night clubs. the band found their moniker in a run-down bookstore after seeing an ad for men

jeremiah r has been responsible for some of the finest electro to be released over the past few years, with his mini albums for tabernacle records being particularly potent. here he launches the distant wave label with eight more chunks of atmospheric, far-sighted futurism. as usual, he flits between ambient style interludes and more expansive dancefloor fare. in the latter category you ll find the motor city techno futurism of -bermuda triangle-, the glistening idm loveliness of -streaming to arcadia-, the larry heard-in-space deepness of -cruiser-, and the drexciyan throb of -jar (jamming avoidance response)-. all are, naturally, both luscious and pleasingly melodious, whilst retaining an intergalactic sense of atmosphere.

golden parachutes is a unique, collaborative musical effort comprised of stewart walker (us/berlin) and touane (italy/berlin). following five years of collaborative live-performances and techno releases through stewart’s persona records imprint, here the duo has decided to co-mingle their influences from afrobeat and progressive jazz into a boundary-free exploration. liberated from the constraints of repetitive, pounding kick drums, they unveil a new sound of timbral fluidity built-up from live and sequenced instruments. more than just music, their innovative approach delivers 43 minutes of consummate aural landscapes that pull the listener in head first. as the title ‘into the dark grey morning’ suggests the album takes you on a sweet atmospheric journey where melodic washes of colour and light flicker illumination into the dark clouds of monochromatic noise and reverb compositions, evoking fresh beginnings in electronic music... like a light at the end of the tunnel. as level records third long-play release, ‘into the dark grey morning’ is an unexpected turn away from the labels normal tendencies. with it’s live-instrumental melodies layered over sweeping electronic backdrops the album dips deeply into progressive rock waters and surfaces with a contemporary krautrock sound, logically delivered by a label from düsseldorf, the birthplace of krautrock music.

in 1987, series-a recorded the single evolution5 technology at spectrum sounds studio in st. clair shores, michigan. their set up was a vocoder, e-mu emulator iii, roland 909 drum machine, and an otari 24-track recorder.

third skin is a 4-track ep that connects the dots between detroit techno, early chicago house and belgium electronic body music. inspired by equal parts liaisons dangereuses, drexciya and black devil disco club.

space arts third single nous savons tout was released in 1978 on if records. their sound was similar to jarres early analog albums, but with the addition of real drums. dominique plays an arp odyssey, clavinet, eminent, and minimoog, maximizing their warm textures. roger plays the drums in an intricate fashion, influenced subtly by jazz fusion.

in 1988 axodry released the maxi 12inch single you on zyx records/combeat. influenced by depeche mode, gary numan and john foxx, the duo crafted high impact industrial, synth pop and electronic body music. their basic set up for recording at rahens home studio was a moog rouge, roland sh-101, teisco synthesizer, linn drum and fricke sequencer. ra/hen performed dramatic vocals, which tell of a lost love found in dreams. included here are the beauty & the beat mix and the beasty dub mix from the 1988 single. on the flip is the razormaid remix, performed by art maharg and joseph watt, that originally appeared on the welcome to the technodrome compilation in 1989. also included is mechanic, originally released in 1991 as the b-side for their final single losing you

shlomo opens the ep with a deep and droning, yet uptempo track. ben gibson continues on the a-side with a synth and tom-driven track, in which the main synth really draws you into the track. takaaki itoh is put on the b1 spot and continues the deep vibe the artists set on the a-side, yet in a more minimalistic way. his track keeps on evolving and growing ever more, while the track in it s core does not change that much. overall severity closes the ep off with a moody banger. this dance floor oriented track focuses on percussive elements and the drums a lot. this track is one of the last ones made by the late max_m, who formed overall severity together with wrong asessment, which makes this ep a little bit more special. four different artists, but a great sounding ep with four tracks that compliment each other really well!

benales opens the e.p. with radiate, a track where you can clearly hear his influences of the american school of 90s minimal techno. long time dj but new on the production side, this is benales first effort on vinyl. after his initial masterpiece on knotweed records (kw006) and a handful of releases on demented (hiss 1992) and krill, opuswerk is back on knotweed with displacement, a trippy, hard hitting, analogic techno attack: no concession on this one! gonzalo md has already delivered the goods on both knotweed (kw004 and kw011) and decision making theory (dmt 006), as well as a fantastic ep recently on extrasolar. here, with sharp oscillation, he keeps developing his unique style, producing a highly percussive, almost samba-like, piece of techno. label owner philippe petit closes the e.p. with indian summer, a track moving along a warm bassline, bearing some recognisable krautrock influences.

crash course in science are a post punk band that formed in 1979 in philadelphia. the band members, dale feliciello, mallory yago and michael zodorozny, met while attending art school, where they began to experiment with crude electronics and off-beat lyrics. ccis avoided conventional instrumentation by using toy instruments and kitchen appliances to augment the distorted guitar, drums and synthesized beats.

over the past several years, j(ay).a.d has released several eps touching on footwork, dubstep, grime and dancehall, approaching dance music with a wide open lens that tends to blur accepted genre lines. a bjork co-sign earlier last year jettisoned the amsterdam-based artist into the popular consciousness. raised in suriname, j(ay).a.d is the consummate dance music outsider and despite living in amsterdam, his music hardly ever fits in with the citys house and techno hegemony. the ogri ai ep is very much a blueprint record, simultaneously paranoid and dark, its seeped in industrial dread and natural beauty. and while many of j(ay).a.ds contemporaries attempt to create more alien sounding music at the expense of a human element, the ogri ai ep has been a overlooked milestone for the hybrid footwork & grime realm, and its now back on re-stock.

immersed in the early days of the 90s midwest rave scene, bill converse began djing at a young age in lansing, michigan. luminaries such as claude young, traxx, and twonz were key early influences. since moving to texas in 1998, he has experimented with analog techniques in varied studio bunkers. early techno, noise, ambient, tape, and paranormal processing are all part of his uncanny sound palette.

dark entries and honey soundsystem records have teamed up again to release another volume of gay porn soundtracks by san francisco-based musician and producer, patrick cowley. “muscle up” is a collection of cowley’s instrumental songs recorded between 1973 and 1980 found in the fox studio vaults. this compilation also includes bonus compositions found in the basement of megatone records owner john hedges and the attic of former bandmate maurice tani.

in 1985 severed heads were asked to release a retrospective, so they dragged out bits lying around. the compilation was titled “clifford darling please don’t live in the past”, spread out into a montage over four sides of vinyl. this compilation includes live recordings, raw demos, unreleased studio recordings and solo pieces from each member of the band during from the first five years. the results are a striking hybrid of the avant-garde industrial and pop.

dark entries digs deeper in to the archives of severed heads, one of the longest surviving bands to emerge from the australian post-punk independent music scene. they began in sydney in 1979, incorporating elements of ‘industrial’ noise-generation, tape cutting & looping and electronic sound synthesis. as the project developed song-structures and vocals were employed in a more-or-less recognizable mutant electro pop style. in 1986 the band released the 12” single “petrol” on nettwerk records. we’ve decided to shed light on the evolution of “petrol” with this ep showcasing four earlier incarnations of what became an instant synth pop classic.

grant dells giant label continues to turn heads despite being so nascent, and now impresses once more with a new ep from the talented echo of glory.

max guld was a post-punk musician from glostrup, denmark one of the western suburbs of copenhagen. in 1983 he formed a band called den forspildte elite with a friend from high school taking inspiration from experimental art punks the residents. from the beginning of 1984 to the beginning of 1985, he recorded a solo album in his 30 square meter apartment. the result was a 40 minute cassette titled for enden af corridoren released in 1985 on hub records that was limited to 100 copies.

portion control is a british electronic and industrial band from south london. the trio of john whybrew, ian sharp and dean piavani started out experimenting with electronics in 1980. linking up with in phaze records, they released a number of cassettes and records before signing with illuminated records in 1983. there followed a series of classic 12inch singles: raise the pulse, rough justice and go-talk, which have become underground dancefloor hits. the band classifies their music style as >hard rhythmic electronics< and were a major influence on skinny puppy, front line assembly and depeche mode.

van kaye + ignit is the dutch duo of ed van kasteren (van kaye) and ignatine bekken(ignit), who joined forces in the city of arnhem during early 1980. while at university, van kaye was the singer of the monomen, a local new wave band. by the end of 1979 he had become more interested in the use of electronics and rhythmic industrial patterns. in april 1980 he released a demo cassette with 30 minutes of his own work titled a slight delay.
