fantastic jazzy funk! this is the second record by azymuth – and it’s way way better than anything they ever cut in america! it’s got a wonderful vibe that mixes brazilian fusion influences with the tight grooves of a maurice white-inspired generation – and the result still sounds amazingly great today. the record has great electric keyboards, some nice deep floating basslines and percussion, and it stands as some of the coolest, dopest stuff in this genre. with the great cuts “tarde”, “tamborim, cuica, ganza, berimbau”, “falcon love call”, and “aguia nao come mosca”. pressing on 180 gram vinyl.
‘mais kriola’ first appeared on brazilian beats brooklyn compilation put together by greg caz and sean marquand for us in 2006. it’s a lovely laid back mid tempo boogie/soul/fusion jam. originally appeared on matheus self-titled lp from 1975.
‘maita’ is a wonderful piece of warm, upbeat mpb from doris monteiro. originally appeared on her ‘agora’ lp from 1976, released by odeon.
duas cidades is a defining moment in the group’s career, one that catches them perfecting their genre-defying sonic mix. the single “playsom” was included on the fifa 2016 soundtrack and the video now has over 2 million plays. the album also features the hit and fan favorite “lucro: descomprimindo”. pressing on 180 gram vinyl, housed in a gatefold sleeve.

2016 fand in santiago de cuba das manana festival statt. es führte zu einem intensiven dialog zwischen vertretern regional-karibischer musiktraditionen und internationalen independent-künstlern aus dem spannungsfeld von dance, avantgarde und jazz. mit der gründung des labels manana wurden vor ort geknüpfte fäden aufgenommen und weitergesponnen. daraus resultierten bereits zwei außergewöhnliche tonträger. -soundspecies & ache meyi- ist der dritte dieser reihe, er fusioniert auf aufsehenerregende weise folk aus kuba mit britischer elektronik. hinter soundspecies verbergen sich zwei als djs und produzenten aktive brüder aus dem englischen dorset. in ihrer musik loten sie die verbindungen zwischen den klängen und formen elektronischer tanzmusik einerseits und den repetitiven mustern von traditionellem folk andererseits aus. die formation ache meyi hat sich hingegen afro-haitianischen rhythmen und stilen wie bembe, vodu, gaga und merengue verschrieben. und das auf eine ziemlich dynamische weise, was angesichts des bandnamens wenig überrascht. die yoruba-begriffe -ache- und -meyi- bedeuten so viel doppelte power.

considered by many as -the motown of salsa,- fania records is probably the most transcendental label in the history of latin music. by bringing together the eclectic vision of dominican bandleader johnny pacheco with the business savvy of impresario jerry masucci, fania created a sound: the apex of tropical music, combined with the swing of big band jazz and the gritty vibe of american r&b. the label provided an artistic heaven for a young generation of musicians who were inspired to experiment with new musical formats. the albums recorded by willie colón, héctor lavoe, rubén blades and eddie palmieri from the early 70s to the mid- 80s went beyond the parameters of so-called -salsa- - taking latin music to unsuspected levels of sophistication. when you think latin soul you relate to a mélange of r&b and mambo rhythms intermixed culturally by and for the youth of america. it was 1974, and a brash youngster by the name of ralfi pagan walked into the offices of fania records and demanded to be heard. fania president jerry masucci allowed ralfi that opportunity, and ralfi auditioned for jerry right there in his office. it took only a few moments for masucci to realize that he was in the company of his newest recording artist, he put ralfi in touch with recording director, johnny pacheco, who hurried him into the recording studio for ralfi’s first fania recording session.

born in argentina, saxophonist and flutist hector “costita” bisignani arrived to brazil in the late 1950s and in the following years played with some of the biggest names of the era such as joão donato, manfredo fest and sérgio mendes. . in 1964 he recorded “impacto” with his sextet, an explosive mix of tough jazz and brazilian samba widely considered his best work. the album’s ten tracks include three costita compositions, songs by tom jobim and vinícius de moraes and a superb version of horace silver’s ‘tokyo blues’. a killer samba-jazz lp! presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180g vinyl.

some crate-digging compilations are often the result of someone hand-picking their choice favourites from another country’s musical history, perhaps unaware or uninvolved with its cultural lineage in the process. on this release - a treasure trove of synth jams, pop, samba boogie, balearic and electro from 1980 & ‘90s brazil - the tracks are picked by millos kaiser, one half of the brazilian duo selvagem, who are at the helm of throwing some of the country’s best dance parties. it’s a rare compilation that offers brazilian music actually picked by a brazilian.
this collection of sixteen tracks doesn’t comprise tracks scoured from deeply in-demand records, the rare sort that sell for eye-watering sums and that collectors spend years tracking down. they are the sort you’d find for a few quid should you come across but, as kaiser says, “the problem is finding them. they aren’t rare because everyone wants a copy but because no one wants them, not even the dealers.”

célia regina cruz recorded four self-titled albums for continental between 1971 and 1977, ‘amor’ in 1982 plus several more before she sadly passed away late in 2017. célia was a brazilian vocalist who worked frequently with master arranger-composer arthur verocai in her early years and many other heavyweights over the course of her extensive career.. this, her second self-titled lp from 1972, features an all-star line up including arthur verocai, erasmo carlos, roberto carlos, marcos valle, antonio carlos jobim, nonato buzar and vinicius de moraes amongst others. célia’s version of ‘na boca do sol’ – taken from this album – is arguably her most well-known and well-loved song. an incredible take on verocai’s original, featuring waling fuzz guitars, strings, piano, horns and drums.

a chance encounter in barcelona, spain brought us together to make this record happen. it’s a precious little marvel of love from kou keri kou and electric cowbell. based in barcelona, spain, the group began with the aim of making music to dance to, taking inspiration from all over the world with no fear: the music from cuba, perú, jamaica, congo and nigeria is as important for kou keri kou as the music played in europe or in the united states. los zafiros, gary numan, los destellos, radio futura, sunny ade and kiko veneno share place in their imagination and help them create open-minded pop that always looks to the future. their lyrics are sometimes open, sometimes a bit more cryptic, sometimes political and sometimes biting, but always try to communicate with the listeners while trying to make them dance. they’ve been playing together for two years, creating songs that didn’t exist before, urging the people to dance and singing about their issues, which may also be yours.

wonderful 70s work from tom ze! the record’s a bit more straightforward than some of his other records from the decade, and has a number of tracks with a samba sound at the base – but there’s more than enough fantastic material to keep the record fresh, and tom’s writing is as great as ever. there’s a vocal group that sings with ze on many of the tracks on the record – but they also seem to sometimes act as a greek chorus, in response to breakaway vocal passages that are dominated by ze. includes the excellent baroque funky number “dor e dor”, plus the tracks “sonho colorido de um pintor”, “a baba”, “o sandalo”, “a briga do edificio italia com o hilton hotel”, and “happy end”. pressing on 180 gram vinyl, housed in a gatefold sleeve.

akokan is a yoruba word used in cuba meaning from the heart, and indeed, every song on the self-titled debut album (march 30/daptone records) by orquesta akokan feels like a heartfelt gift from the band to the listener. assembled and led by cuban vocalist jose pepito gomez, orquesta akokan is a big band collective of the finest musicians on the island, both young and old. it features all-original music and was cut live to tape over a three-day session at havanas hallowed state-run estudios areito. areito is one of the longest operating studios in the world and where important cuban records have been made. the album was produced by jacob plasse and arranged by mike eckroth. comes in a gatefold sleeve with download code included.

a tripped-out batch of hard jamming tracks from ex-mutante rita lee – recorded with assistance from all the members of the group at the time, but in a mode that’s quite different overall! lee is clearly the star of the show here – singing all lyrics with a much fiercer vocal approach than on her earlier solo album – pushing things hard to keep up with the jamming keyboards of arnaldo baptista and guitar of sergio dias – both of whom are working with the energy that would show up in the mutantes styles in the years after lee departed. one of the most compelling aspects of the record is the structure of the tunes – less conventionally rockish overall than the direction os mutantes were moving towards – and still with that strong dramatic flair that lee always provided when in the group. titles include -vamos tratar da saude-, -amor branco e preto-, -superficie do planeta-, -teimoisia-, -tapupukitipa-, -beija me amor-, and -frique como-.
a landmark album from late 60s brazil! this is the first – and the wildest – album by this legendary group that was one of the founding forces of the tropicalia movement – a brilliant musical statement that easily ranks with some of the most groundbreaking late 60s american work by the velvet underground, captain beefheart, or the stooges! the music is a wonderful blend of 60s rock and early mpb – hard-driving with plenty of guitars, but also produced with beautifully baroque touches that echo through simultaneous albums by caetano veloso and gal costa – both of whose 1969 albums are strongly resonant with this one. in fact, caetano contributed a number of tracks to the album, including -panis et circenses-, -bat macumba-, -trem fantastma-, and his great -baby-, which is done fantastically here. great stuff all ’round!

quite possibly the last truly sublime album ever recorded by os mutantes – a set that’s a bit more rock-oriented then their first few, but still pretty revolutionary overall! the group have expanded to a quintet at this point, but haven’t yet falling into the guitar-heavy groove of later years – and rogerio duprat is working with the group on arrangements, although mutantes member arnaldo baptista is handling production chores himself. odd styles still slide into the mix as the tunes roll on – creating that great sense of surprise that makes their best work so great, and keeping things fresh even when a bit more straight ahead! titles include a reprise of -baby-, one of the group’s early classics – plus -portugal de navio-, -virginia-, -tecnicolor-, -el justicero-, -lady, lady-, -sarava-, -it’s very nice pra xuxu-, and -top top-.
a legendary album! this previously unreleased album by os mutantes was supposed to be their breakthrough album to an english speaking market – but for years it’s only been talked about in hushed whispers, and has only been heard by a lucky few! the record was recorded in paris in 1970 – and it’s all in english! (not that we’re biased against portuguese, mind you – but since we’re english speakers, it’s kind of a nice thing to have a record that we can understand!) the record features a number of tunes from the mutantes first two albums – redone here with translated lyrics, and in a compressed pop style that’s a bit smoother than the original albums, but still very nice! in fact, the record’s a sophisticated pop statement that would have stood well in the company of many of the best of 1970s rock elite – had the boneheads at philips actually decided to release the record! no use crying over spilled milk, though – because the album’s out now, and it’s filled with loads of nice tracks like -panis et circensis-, -batmacumba-, -tecnicolor-, -el justiciero-, -i’m sorry baby-, -saravah-, and a sublime reading of -baby-, a track that was virtually the manifesto for tropicalia!
pretty great sounds from the legendary antonio carlos jobim – an album cut a bit later than his bossa years, but with a darkly sophisticated sound that’s pretty darn compelling! the album features larger orchestrations by claus ogerman, and in a way, it’s similar to the jobim album on decca from 1973 (aka maita pere) – in that it’s got all the simple elements of jobim’s earlier bossa scoring, flushed out into moodier orchestral forms that we’d rank right up there with the modernist work of gil evans or duke ellington. a few cuts have a breezier sparer sound, and you’ll hear english versions of some older bossa tunes. titles include -dreamer-, -canta mais-, -olha maria-, -wave-, -two kites-, -this happy madness-, -song of the sabia-, -estrada do sol-, -voce vai ver-, -off key-, and -triste-.

an incredible album from lo borges one of the best singer/songwriters on the brazilian scene of the 70s! borges first burst into the spotlight for his work on the club da esquina album by milton nascimento and his work as part of miltons corner club really helped shape the style of the more famous singer. yet borges is almost an equally great talent on his own with a soaring, soulful approach that’s every bit as great as the best nascimento material from the period and recorded in a wonderfully similar spirit! the sound here is completely sublime right from the start music that moves us, even if we can t understand the language of the lyrics like some of the best work by caetano veloso and gilberto gil. there’s maybe a bit more guitar than on some of the milton nascimento work of the period but used in a fuzzy way that slides in nicely with some of the jazzy phrasing of the instrumentation which is delivered with help from key contemporaries who include beto guedes, nelson angelo, toninho horta, and tenorio jr. the songwriting is amazing and titles include cancao postal, voce fica melhor assim, nao foi nada, calibre, faca seu jogo, toda essa agua,pensa voce, como o machando, and aos baroes.
an incredible album from brazilian rock legend raul seixas – easily one of the most important artists to emerge after the tropicalia generation – and a singer with a sound that’s as striking as his image on the cover! the album’s got an explosive blend of styles – everything from psychedelic samba to country rock to easy rock tunes – all bound together by the strong sense of presence that helped seixas elevate to become one of brazili’s most controversial rock stars of the time, all with the kind of legacy you might expect from the cover image! the sound is great – very different than what american and anglo groups were doing at the time, although with sly nods to their modes from time to time – and titles include the english track -how could i know-, plus -as minas do rei salomao-, -mosca na sopa-, -cachorro-, -al capone-, and the strange electronic -introducao-.
brilliant 70s material by antonio carlos jobim – one of his key sets from the middle part of the decade that had the composer really deepening his approach to both singing and songwriting – moving past some of the more instrumental modes that he was using at the start of the decade! there’s a richness to the songs that goes way past simple bossa styles – and the lyrical brilliance shows that jobim hardly ever needed a poet or co-writer to help him hit the heights – as he really wins us over with his words as much as his music. claus ogerman produced, and gives things the right balance between fullness and space in the charts – which allows both a great focus on antonio’s vocal style – expressive, but very down to earth – and a few nice solos on fender rhodes too! titles include -saudade do brasil-, -correnteza-, -boto-, -ligia-, -valse-, -arquitetura de morar-, and -o homem-.
a wild solo project from rita lee – done after the breakup of os mutantes, and offered up almost as some sort of commentary on mainstream rock in the 70s! there’s a much more straightforward approach to the music here – a sometimes-glammy sound that’s echoed by the band’s space-style costumes and makeup – but there’s also some weirdly old-style rock instrumentation too, almost like the way that an artist like gary glitter could fold the 50s and 70s together in his music, and come across making something very weird and new. here, the keyboards are almost stronger than the guitars – and rita herself plays moog, melotron, organ, and piano – on titles that include -tem uma cidade-, -menino bonito-, -mame natureza-, and -eclipse do cometa-.
these songs represent but a small sampling of the fruits of a flowering in brazilian creativity. the innovations in structure, lyrics and arrangements, combined with a very restrained but heartfelt intensity, are unique to brazilian pop music… and in their own way, are as radical, seductive and beautiful as the best english language pop.

released in 1974, téo azevedos first album grito selvagem (wild shout) is an irresistible blend of soul and rock with an unmistakable brazilian character. as many other lost gems of time past, the album found little commercial success, and still during the 70s teo turned forever to the true brazilian popular music the forró, the roots of sertanejo and the rhythms and traditions of brazils often forgotten countryside becoming, from then on, a genuine cultural reference in brazil not only as musician and composer, but also as a poet and researcher of popular folklore, being awarded the grammy latino prize in 2013.

sivuca s legendary brazilian cover of the bill withers classic ‘ain’t no sunshine’ was a big hit on the rare groove scene and still sounds amazing today.

following our first bossanova lp (vol. 1), wewantsounds is releasing vol. 2, a second lp of pure bossa nova tracks from rio featuring hip cult classics and rarities. bossa nova revolutionised the world in the 60’s but the revolution was already bubbling from the late 50’s. chronicling the birth of the movement. featuring key artists on this second viny edition, like joão gilberto, joão donato, elis regina, elzasoares, who is making a highly-acclaimed come-back and tamba trio, as well as more cult musicians like orlanndivo, johnny alf and celso murilo. bossanova is the perfect mix of early bossa and samba canção (with its more relaxed samba singing). compiled by wewantsounds, the lp features 20 tracks with an essay with track by track analysis from french journalist jacques denis (liberation).
obbatuké are an 8-piece rumba group from santiago de cuba, lead by renowned quinto player carlos guerra. the band are mainstays at the casa del caribe, widely regarded as the epicentre for the eastern rumba scene.
rumba is a percussive-led genre descended from africa which was formed when mixed with spanish influences in the ports of havana and matanzas.
as innovators in the genre, obbatuké have been a huge inspiration to the manana project, and were involved in collaborations at this year’s event with plaid, quantic, nicolas jaar and london based breakthrough act, ariwo. this particular session was recorded at castlesound studios in edinburgh on the band’s first trip outside of cuba. it features three different sub-genres of rumba and an extended yoruba bata piece called orun seco.

a great 70s album by os novos baianos – a wonderfully youthful group that was one of the bright spots in brazilian music after the tropicalia years. the band had a style that mixed folksy percussion with honest personal songwriting, plus occasional touches of elements gleaned from the larger influences in brazilian rock at the time. the album has a sound that’s a lot more intimate than later work, with some especially great work on guitar and bandolim, and great production on the band’s vocals.

rootsy samba and hipper 70s mpb influences – all filtered down into a really unique little groove! back in these early years, novos baianos had an inventive sound that was really a standout in 70’s brazilian music – a sense of earnest, open-handed music making that was something of a legacy from the tropicalia years – but one that also carried with it some of the more hippie-dippy influences in the brazilian underground of the early 70s! the style here is a bit sparer and more acoustic than on some of the group’s other records – often comprised from samba percussion and guitar, but occasionally augmented by more electric instrumentation, as well as some folkloric flute!
