opilec music is proud to bring you the first ever remix album of san francisco s cult synthesizer-punk legends, the units! one of america s first synthesizer bands and pioneers of a genre now known as synthpunk, the units were notable for their use of synthesizers in place of guitars, and multimedia performances featuring multiple projections of satirical, instructional films critical of conformity and consumerism... predating mtv and 25 years before the birth of youtube! this is a definitive collection of over 24 of the band s original songs written between 1977 and 1984 and remixed for the dance floor in 2010 by a renowned and international cast of over 40 djs, producers and bands active in the contemporary club scene. this project celebrates the futuristic units along with the innovative djs that first played them.

last summer theo parrish toured europe with a badass band he calls the unit, comprised of himself on keys and vocals, lead vocals by ideeyah, amp fiddler on keys and backing vocals, myele manzanza on drums, mr. mensah on bass and keys, duminie deporres on guitar and dancers jade soul, mai le, dominique choreographed by gehrik. on stage they covered sound signature classics, cuts from theo’s latest lp and a selection of theo’s favorite dancefloor tracks, and the label are excited to be putting out a few of the recordings made during the tour. starting with this two track 12 inch, the a side is a cover of skye’s ain’t no need. for those who know, the b side is a rendition of walking thru the sky from theo parrish’s 1996 baby steps ep.

das unity sextet ist eine sehr spezielle band. buddy franco, fats young jr., cassius farqhuar, junior oliver, chuck waldron und fat thumbs ronnie wurden im frühling 2011 aufeinander aufmerksam, als sie in verschiedenen bands auf jazz-festivals auftraten. ihr unterschiedliches repertoire variierte von traditionellem bis hin zum experimentellen jazz. dabei merkten sie, dass sie dieselbe vision eines moderne jazzstils teilten, der zum einen sehr modern sein sollte, sich aber zugleich an der schule der alten meister orientierte. später fanden dann sie heraus, dass sie alle aus der gleichen region im südwesten englands stammten.
