selected advent deal. charlois present where is the champion, timothy j. fairplay s first full length solo album. twelve shifting, shuffling and shimmering tracks make up this debut. cruising the highways and byways between proto-techno, horror disco and forlorn wave, fairplay conjures up his creations from metal and smoke. saturated snares, clipped claps and warbling chords are dusted with distortion. and this idea of distortion, manipulation and the blurred line is omnipresent. innocent and sinister, cruel and playful, accepted boundaries are brazenly ignored as engines growl and synthlines soar.

first outing for newly minted glasgow-based label work for love. the inaugural strike comes from none other than timothy j fairplay, the synthesizer warlock known for his involvement in the axis, a loose unit comprising of mutual interests revolving around the studio complex timothy shares with andrew weatherall and his own partner in crimes of the future scott fraser.

stories of prison sees timothy j fairplay returns to emotional response having helped shape the identity of the label in it s infancy with the release of somebody, somewhere back in 2012. a lot of music has come from both artist and label since then, with fairplay s reputation as a solo artist fully established thanks to releases on a myriad of labels. stories of prison is a mini lp rich in the musical intensity fairplay has instilled in all his music to date, yet there is a daring sense of diversity at play too. from the effervescent dubbed out house toughness of opening track -the quay-, fairplay veers into subaquatic breakbeat, deep synth love from outer space chuggers, and other late night sonic treats

collaborations are often the fortune of timing. with andy having moved on since closing the dissident label to launching his cave paintings project to tim s departure from battant and striking out as andrew weatheralls engineer and soon to be co-member of the asphodells, an alliance was born between the two to undertake a series of live jam sessions at eachs respective studios. a love of new wave, new beat, uk bleep and detroit techno all feature in b-ultras and the aptly titled, neu beat. both cuts are heavily soaked in the pitch black, smoke machine funk and strob-laden fug of andys (and co-hort joe hart) infamous world unknown dancefloor. running at around 10 minutes the tracks are essentially an examination of acid houses ideals. clattering hats, throbbing basslines, stabbing keys and doses of 303. keeping it pretty simple but all about a pure groove on and on. backing these up is a remix of b-ultras from jamie paton that accentuates the groove and drags the acid deeper down to some b-boy dub throwdown - with more to follow from all protagonists in 2014.

the 5th release from rothmans plays homage to legendry argentinean defender alberto tarrantini and to mark this 5th release rothmans have provided a team sheet to rival even that infamous 1982 world cup squad.

named in homage to the series of collectable football cards from the 1970s, the rothmans label follows the inaugural mario kempes release with another long-haired icon being given his dues in the form of the harald toni schumacher release, complete with another four tracks of chugging techno-disco. emotional responses timothy j fairplay kicks things off with *off the rails*, an expectedly dark and tense piece of carpenter-esque synth, while lwe writer per bojsen-moller delivers the atmospheric techno of *staying late*, whose rippling analogue bassline gives way to an unexpectedly funky breakdown. on the flip, steve cooks *noahs arp* takes things a balearic house direction with its thick, filtered analogue textures adding some psychedelic colour to its mid-tempo grooves, while emile strunzs *magnetic* adds some acid flavour to its low-swung, vocoder saturated italo swagger.

magic feet are gaining momentum after the superb tommy awards ep, and welcome timothy j fairplay to the fold for their third release. fairplay is a rising star of the uk underground and recently opened proceedings on bird scarer, the new vinyl-only initiative from andrew weatherall, with the sprawling cosmiche flecked brilliance of >the final reel<, and has also contributed to the output of astrolab and world unknown. fairplay has little interest in making functional dance floor records and delivers four cutshere that plough a distinctly epic path through post 100bpm electronic music that is framed by both cinematic and musical references. limited to 300 hundred copies only.

after debuting with an albums worth of experimental, ambient electronic explorations from the hugely talented nyc based jason letkiewicz under his alan hurst moniker, the emotional response label maintains such high standards with their second release. the focus shifts to timothy j fairplay, a uk producer whose growing discography is proving to be impressive too. ears should still be ringing to his world unknown released homage to ancient egypts predilection for psychedelic drugs and its little surprise he has been hand picked for the debut release on sir weatheralls new vinyl initiative bird scarer. the four tracks that make up somebody, somewhere retain that dubby mid tempo poise that permeated fairplays output to date, though he seems to revel in the freedom to experiment emotional response encourages, focusing more on developing expansive patterns of synths on tracks like >aim for the yellow sector< and the title track. special mention too for >i do not believe< which comes on in a deep medi doing digidub style!
