for the 9th instalment in dba s dubs series ikonika and big strick square off head to head, following the hyperdub artist s genre-defying distractions lp earlier this year. oral suspension is an instrumental which switches rough-shod between a uk halfstep crunch and a hoop dreams era chicago bounce. on the flip big strick brings his characteristic smooth groove to the table for the remix, which, though laidback, is nevertheless bound to energise the dancers. evading the ubiquitous pigeonholes, ikonika has variously been known for her dubstep innovations, her uk funky experiments on hum and buzz and her post-urban sketches for hyperdub. meanwhile though an interest in techno and specifically the sounds of the midwest have underpinned her work.

ikonika is one of the outstanding producers of her generation. her 2008 debut >please< (hyperdub), announced a forward thinking, highly melodic, twisted take on uk underground dance music. after further singles for planet mu and hyperdub, she went on to release one of the best albums of 2010 ‘contact, love, want, have’, receiving glowing reviews from the guardian, bbc, nme, fact, resident advisor, pitchfork among many more. her remix projects have included interpol, caribou, cubic zirconia and dj mujava.

beach mode (keep it simple) is the perfect snapshot of ikonikas new album aerotropolis. it is also her first vocal track, graced with the voice of *one to watch*, jessy lanza. beach mode combines sunny salsa-like chords and claves, inspired by latin freestyle dance music from the 80s, with jessys vocals cutting in over some soaring rough synths. it is a refreshingly straight forward and sensual piece of pop dance. side b starts with a dub mix for all the vocal haters, while the percapella version breaks it down into a syncopated drum track and a slightly dubbed take on the vocals, giving it a tracky and colder toughness reminiscent of early chicago house music. get into beach mode.

nice price deal !!! idiot is already something of a hit with those whove heard it being played out, combining hard soca drums with lush ecstatic melodic synth harmonies and a driving bass with a strange 8-bit melody that stumbles and trips around the rhythm. its completely alien at first, but potent enough to stick in your ears until you might catch yourself humming the refrain when you least expect it. a unique and fantastic combination of compelling contemporary sounds! altered natives, aka north london producer danny native, whose track >rass out< was one of 2009s best, takes over the b-side with a remix that seems to reflect 20 years of british house music back on itself. just using the bleeps from the original tune, he echoes and morphs his own melody over stepping dubby kicks and snares and a dark, driving bassline

>smuck< follows in the tradition of ikonika~rs sweet and sour, curdled sound, with ever changing off-key melodies and metal-like synth guitar lines over sweet chilled chords, the track takes her penchant for melodies that border on the atonal as far as it can go, like a sophisticated take on 8-bar grime.
her remix of eero johannes >we could be skweeeerooos< on the b-side simply switches up the tempo of the original, makes the rhythm nice and bouncy and tightens up the original adding some trademark bent melodies and a see-sawing bassline. the end result is a linear, melodic track that feels like its somewhere between wiley and aphex at their sweetest.

hyperdub kick off 2008 they way they intend to proceed, with new tracks from a new artist. on her debut release, ikonika comes with her own very unique, warped yet soulful bleep sound. with shape shifting beats that switch styles every few bars its hard to pin these two tracks down... cos if it was easy, it just wouldnt be hyperdub. both tunes are one minute minimal, one minute maximal, driven along by ikonikas special combination of wonky synth and deep swingin sub bass melodies that place them somewhere between an early, blocky grime instrumental and the sweeter side of detroit techno ? except with better bass of course! who needs a vocalist when your synth can sing like this? quite how kode9 manages to keep unveiling new producers of such abundant talent is a conun drum, but one to be cracked some other time when we?re not so busy keeping up with his astonishing labels ceaseless march into the future.

hinter mias void verbirgt sich der vielseitige elektroniker, dj, keyboarder und jazzpianist matthias vogt, *return to bliss* ist seine debüt-ep für das label born electric. das titelstück bezieht sich auf vogts titel *bliss* aus dem jahr 2011, für dessen remix er sein techno-pseudonym mias void nutzt, unter dem er 2013 bereits die ep *tactics* veröffentlichte. *return to bliss* wird begleitet von drei mixen: ikonika club remix von sara abdel-hamid alias ikonika, the models dance to trance remix von radu munteanu aka the model und ikonika bliss pop remix. die platte ist limitiert auf weltweit 300 exemplare.

it has been a head-spinning couple of months for miracle. the new ldn/nyc synth-pop duo comprising singer daniel osullivan and synth overlord steve moore have released their debut ep on house anxiety (the big pink, zoo kid etc) to fevered critical acclaim, notably wowing the likes of wire, nme, dazed and confused and pitchfork in rare, uniting form. they then made their live debut with a series of shows with likeminds darkstar and blondes, before premiering their stunning debut video for the eps leviathan lead track >the visitor<, in the us via pitchfork and then in europe via dazed. now to tie a ribbon around this meteoric first chapter, they are releasing a limited edition double 12-inch vinyl ep, collecting together on physical release for the first time the comprehensive, dazzling selection of mixes and reworkings that >the visitor< was treated to.
