after 20 years of experience, gary martin couldnt resist a 12 inch that is also the 50th release for teknotika: a label from detroit that didnt exactly stick with the game when it switched to the mp3 format. *basking in blackness* is a composition of textured broken beat then classic four on the floor old school soul. *synthotika* is what would happen if a synthasizer could take over an orchestra. a track inspired by detroit peers no doubt. *every bit as beautiful* goes sensative deep house piano, a lil latin percussion and soaring eno-esque synths to top it off. the title is a bit sarcastic, let us face it, there is no life after techno!

serious business is a poppin' electro-tinged techno cut with gary using his usual flare for detroit synth textures nicely, 'ghetto chic' combines a deep bassline groove with clicking beats, sharp analog synths, + robotic vocals listing. of the 2 takes, the broadway mix just takes the edge, with a superb basic channel flavour

3-tracker. not the faint of heart, this is dancefloor techno at its best, with clattering beats and analog basslines laying down the groundwork, while synth chords stab in and out in true detroit style.

after being one of the many standouts on the we are opilec…! vol. iii compilation back in 2016, i-robots glamouflage is now getting a full vinyl release with artwork by tomozo kevorkian, who was designer for nyc s body & soul, and remixes by a standout team of producers from japan to switzerland to south africa and the usa. opening up the ep is a fantastic new take ii version from label boss i-robots, who added exclusive chinese vocal samples recorded on the streets of huang jiang city many years ago. the track is inspired by ennio morricone and supermax and is a loose and infectious groove with brilliant drums and percussion and an elastic bassline that really gets you moving. it s a subtle update to the original—also included here as a bonus cut—which itself is a steamy and tropical sounding groove. swiss electronic pioneer schaltkreis wassermann then features on a version of the original that reaches for the cosmos with its rugged bass riffs, tumbling toms and busy, ever evolving groove. it has a big breakdown with exotic synths wandering through the night and oodles of effects and big guitar licks. the first of the remixes comes from kuniyuki takahashi who has been a big supporter of i-robots since 2000. he is a sound designer from japan who had a compilation of his works put out by music from memory back in february. his version is laden with cosmic synths and chants, grunting and organic drums and is sure to be massive this summer thanks to its open air vibes. detroit s underrated but vital gary martin is the boss of the teknotika label and his version featuring colten decker playing an unusual sax line shows another side to the motor city. it s a curious and mysterious tune that makes for an unsettling atmosphere that keeps you locked throughout as it snakes along.

own existence is a track from i-robots debut album, law of robotics. inspired by asimovs laws the album came out in 2008 and is now providing inspiration for a series of remix releases in the new year.

this young producer from belgium made himself a name with techno and house releases on teknotika, reload and freelectronics. here he offers some deep and funky tracks between house and tech-house that refers to act like freaks and other classic artists.

martins *escape from south warren* lp will arrive on october 5th on the label operated by frank juncaj, aka dj 3000. juncaj calls martin an *unsung hero of detroit techno* and cites his label, teknotika records, which has been running since 1993, as a key influence. the first remix ep, due out september 11th, features reworks by robert hood and dj 3000 in addition to two original cuts. mark broom and rolando contribute to the second ep, which arrives on october 12th.

the detroit music community has outposts in nearly every major city, and vancouver, british columbia is no exception. this ep represents the connection of two such artists, detroit native, josh garrett, who currently resides in vancouver and runs the subspec label, and rennie foster, a stalwart of the underground, who has spent a quarter of his life in tokyo, but born in bc and now living back there, in vancouver. rennie has released on a myriad of detroit labels, such as transmat, teknotika, soiree, subject detroit, wallshaker, and motech. josh and rennie met in vancouver, only since rennies recent return, and realizing they were of the same tribe, immediately began to collaborate on a number of projects, now including this limited run, double a-side, record, chalk full of dj friendly techno trax, firmly rooted in the motor city sound, yet unique enough to be a contributor, not just another imitator.
