calling marcelle a dj doesnt wholly represent what shes doing. (three) turntables and a mixer is more the medium that she uses to create and share sounds, ideas and moments.

it sounded all right through two walls, so what s the problem? the final words of two walls, the fast and very catchy leading track of dj marcelle s new record, sum up an aesthetic almost lost in today s musical climate, where often a pleasing attitude and overproduced music sadly rule, even in so-called alternative circles. the quote comes from the late mark e. smith (1957 - 2018), legendary frontman of the fall, and is taken from some of the conversations marcelle had with smith over the years. smith is referring to a recording process but for marcelle his words stand for something bigger.

for her third outing on the german label jahmoni, marcelle is as inventive and unpredictable as ever. the four tracks on the wittily titled psalm tree ep go from wild techno to abstract dub, and all bear that undefinable marcelle touch of freedom and imagination, which sets the dj/producer so apart from almost all of her younger peers. the ever-travelling dutch lady, who was one of the highlights of this year s nyege nyege music festival in uganda, toys with musical styles and expectations, both live and in the studio she has always deejayed more or less like a musician. this was amongst others recognised by faust founder member hans-joachim irmler, who between 2008 and 2014 released 4 marcelle albums on his klangbad label.

there are not many conventional rules in the world of dutch dj/producer dj marcelle/another nice mess, or they have to be her own, but which she is more than happy to break at any time she fancies. for the past 15 years she has been travelling around europe and beyond, playing her brave three turntable sets in front of often both stunned, surprised and euphoric audiences. she is an original, skilled mixer, with a very distinctive style of her own, avoiding most dj-cliches and stale rules.

dj marcelle is one of the most seasoned and widely respected dj s in europe. she s a true pioneer with her free , brave and creative way of mixing. besides this she has always been following the latest developments in forward-thinking music and has therefore a keen ear for exciting new sounds. for the label klangbad, owned by hans-joachim irmler of krautrock band faust, she has released four double vinyl albums, mainly dedicated to and comprising her three turntable composition/mix talents. the munich based label jahmoni is proud to release her first 2-track club ep.

imagine a collab between cabaret voltaire and eric copeland mixed by the scientist and you�ll start to enter the sphere of robin asselman. all spectrums explored. the off kilter dub waltz of �16-16� stutters into view with a heavy and heady rolling dread, whilst inaudible vocal snippets and flatlining synth lines echo and enforce a melee of repetition and danger. �fitness talk� perhaps best showcases assel�s interest in dubwise production techniques, and his ability to soak up a palette of sound and turn it into something truly his own. soft familiar bass pads provide the backbone here for all out sample mayhem, a space where recognisable dub effects and sonars vibe alongside absolutely unsettling outer samples of jarring vocals and inaudible upset, purposefully mixed to jolt ears into unfamiliar territories. being the nephew of dj marcelle, this experimental approach and inspiring concept of pushing samples to the absolute limits of their origin to create a new unexplored path is clearly something that has been fed down from marcelle to robin throughout his youth....
