7 inch singles were instrumental to the development of the jamaican music industry, more affordable than full lengths for the consumer, they also allowed the labels to turnaround what was being recorded into music played from their booming sound systems as quickly as possible. in that spirit, get on down will be reissuing some of the most crucial jamaican sides on 45, staring with the maytals “monkey man.” recorded in 1969, the cut was a smash hit in jamaica and hit number 47 when released in the uk in early 1970. “monkey man” went on to be highly influential on the british two-tone movement of the later 70s with the specials offering up a ripping version of the cut on their 1979 debut. the b side, “night and day”, though not a chart-burner, is certainly one of the most solid rock-steady cuts you’ll ever encounter rife with bubbly keys, tight snares and toots hibbert’s incredibly soulful vocals.

too $hort’s legendary 1992 effort “shorty the pimp” is back in effect on vinyl thanks to the hip hop preservationist at get on down. though many don’t consider this to be one of too $hort’s strongest releases, the project did move well over 80.000 in its first week of release landing at number 6 on the billboard top 200. taking the title from the incredibly rare 1973 blaxploitation film, too $hort does what he does best on shorty the pimp: funk beats, oastful braggadocio, a few conscious rhymes and layers of straight up pimp talk. the lyrical content can certainly be considered comical and entertaining. “shorty the pimp” is also a stand out project for producer ant banks who did many of the beats for the project, his first works with too $hort with many more to follow over the next decade. oddly enough, one of the best comments on “shorty the pimp” comes from a random guy on the internet who commented on his experience listening to the release, “i ran my car into a tree after listening to ‘it don’t stop’ definitely made for cars with the booming systems!”

by the time the jungle brothers rapped about it in 1988, house music had been bumping in nyc clubs for years. even though the genre would go on to become a global phenomenon, house music had humble beginnings in predominantly gay and black clubs in chicago. musically, house music was inspired by the eclectic dance records played by djs frankie knuckles and ron hardy at clubs like “the warehouse” and “muzik box”. with a growing club scene, labels like trax records and dj international played a major role in the development of the genre. founded in 1984, trax was an important outlet for house music in its early days, releasing many classics including -no way back- by adonis, larry heard s -can you feel it,- and the first so-called house anthem in 1986, -move your body- by marshall jefferson. this latter tune gave a massive boost to house music, extending recognition of the genre outside of chicago.

the brighton-based powerhouse duo known as the prototypes have officially announced the release of their very first vinyl record, hopefully signifying a legacy of future get hype records vinyl packages for drum and bass fans everywhere. featuring the monumental original mix of “rocket guns blazin’” paralleled by the internationally-supported remix by crissy criss, malux, and erb n dub, this exceptional record is one for dance floor fans everywhere. after the massive success of the label’s launch, multiple world tours, countless number #1’s alongside the groundbreaking signings the legendary duo themselves have discovered, this will be an excellent milestone for the get hype records team. we get hype.

get on down proudly presents another top-notch vinyl reissue, from their long-running series of collaborations with james brown’s famed 70s funk label people records. as the 1970s wore on, the classic funk sounds that had defined james brown’s backing band, the j.b.’s, gave way to the rise of disco music. fred wesley and his collective of musicians couldn’t resist the chance to make their mark, releasing “hustle with speed” in 1975, with charles bobbit and don love producing, and the godfather himself, james brown co-writing and providing arrangements. “hustle with speed” didn’t cross over like the band had hoped it would, but it was nonetheless remarkable album, featuring the j.b.’s signature funky style married with disco to exciting effect. all the while there’s still plenty to be had for the funk die-hard, from the brass blow-out jam “here we come, here we go, here we are”, to the trombone-heavy “all aboard the funky soul train”, to the powerhouse opening salvo that is “(it’s not the express) it’s the jbs monaurail”. songs from “hustle with speed” would take on lives of their own decades after the album’s release, through sampled appearances in tracks by jay-z, nas, eric b. & rakim, ultramagnetic mcs, epmd, and many more.

two unreleased recordings dug up by the team at numero group for their purple snow comp (get it), these were begging to be put on 45. recorded at audiotek studios inc in 1975. david z, who engineered lipps inc s -funkytown- and several prince productions, piloted both these recordings. get it on is the perfect end up night stone groove track, i can t recommend this record enough, buy it. another completely selfish venture, i just wanted this on 45.

must have 12inch lee perry 12inch repressed. black vinyl press - as opposed to the 2017 bf red press. starting 2018, get on down brings you a beautiful package of roots reggae weirdness from the almighty upsetter: lee scratch perry. this 12inch single features the song disco devil, recorded by the legendary jamaican mad genius with the group the full experience, as a version of max romeos chase the devil. but dont jump to conclusions based on the song title musically this is as far as you can get from saturday night fever. thick, reverb-drenched dub/roots reggae laced with perrys dusted vocals and brilliant work behind the boards are on the menu throughout. this cut is undeniably underrated in perrys catalog and fans will eat this up, since it has always been hard to find on 7inch and 12inch for many years now

get physical is proud to announce the release of the first ever album from chicago house luminary dj pierre. entitled wild pitch: the story, it collects originals and remixes old and new, and stands as a testament to the unique skill of one of dance musics most important figures. famously, dj pierre as good as invented the squelch of acid house when playing with his roland tr-303 drum machine as part of phuture back in the late eighties. from there he went on to clock up more than 200 credits under aliases like doomsday, prime one, raving lunatics, ac!d face, dj pierres afro acid project and many more. he also became famous for the wild pitch mixes and alias that lend this album its name: they were characterised by long intros, layer upon layer of strings, repetitive vocal samples, and filtered hypnotic sounds on hard beats. working with labels like strictly rhythm, trax, king street, nite grooves, international deejay gigolo and more recently get physical, pierre has contributed hugely to the global evolution of house music for thirty years plus. this is a timely reminder of that and one that is jam packed with essential tunes that, old or new, still sound impossibly fresh. included is a cover version of donna summers classic and pioneering disco cut ‘i feel love. it is a 9 minute masterpiece of loose drums, wild acid lines and synthesised squelches that build and build before the vocal arrives and carries you away to the stars

new years deal - the legendary lidell townsell on the legendary trax label - what s not to like? get the hole might sound like a fairly dubious title for an ep, but it works within the realms of chicago house! released in the golden year of 88, this ep contains nothing but vintage midwest acid grooves! you could argue that the xxx rated message behind lead cut get the hole is an early precursor of what would come out of the chi via dance mania and other associated labels and artists in latter years. rumour has it the track had an impact on the super underground b-more club scene too unsurprisingly! if you like your house music rough, ready & raw then this is for you! warehouse sounds, box jams, it s all here! remastered in conjunction with trax records, fully legit, now is the time to revisit a cornerstone of classic chicago house music, often imitated, never bettered!

the bug kündigt mit bad feat. flowdan und get out the wa feat. killa p & irah (die erste kollaboration zwischen killa p und the bug seit skeng! vom 2008er album london zoo) seine neue aa-side 12inch an, die anfang dezember 2017 auf 12inch vinyl via ninja tune erscheint. auf bad schauen flowdan und the bug ein wenig über ihren eigenen musikalischen tellerrand: der mc bietet seine poesie in bestem singjay-style (abgeleitet von sing und jay aus deejay: dem eigentlich mc in der reggae-welt) dar und verweist somit offenkundig auf seine jamaikanische herkunft, indem er chams klassiker ghetto story zitiert und mit seiner eigenen geschichte über das aufwachsen in east london vermischt. ebenfalls für ihn eher unüblich, hat the bug den ganzen riddim aus einer durch ihn stark verfremdeten aufnahme eines einzelnen sowjetischen drumcomputers produziert und so lange an den effekten rumgeschraubt, bis der beat ordentlich rumpelte. und das wars dann auch: keine weiteren komponenten wurden hierfür verwendet. ganz ohne basslines kommt dieser track gänzlich mit vocals und beatbox allein aus so simpel und effektiv kann es manchmal gehen. get out the way ist die erste zusammenarbeit zwischen the bug und killa p, seit ihrem furiosen gemeinsamen song skeng! aus dem schon kultverdächtigen album london zoo von 2008. killa p bringt hierfür noch irah aus seiner killaz army crew mit und zusammen fallen sie über den beat her, den the bug in anlehnung an seine heißgeliebte und von junglist oder dillinja inspirierte reese bassline produziert hat. die beiden mcs üben sich im song in sachen dancefloor-zerstörung und klingen erschreckend glaubwürdig in ihren drohungen und einschüchterungsversuchen.

amongst hip-hop fans, boogie down productions first two albums criminal minded (1987) and by all means necessary (1988) both loom very large. and for good reason: they both captured one of the late 1980s most important and influential crews at their highest powers of lyricism and musical invention. that being said, too many people sleep on bdps third lp, ghetto music. released in 1989, when the hip-hop world was truly beginning to explode and reach new heights of sales and exposure around the world, the album is arguably as powerful as the groups first two. as on by all means necessary, in the wake of the tragic death of original founder, producer and dj scott larock, krs-one pushed along mightily on the production side, with help from his extended crew. musically the sound created on albums 2 & 3 was funky, catchy, and continually innovative, giving him the perfect backdrop to build his edutainment syllabus. lyrically there was never a question about krsã power, and on ghetto music he continues to impress, teach and ask important questions. clear cases in point are two of the albumãs singles, you must learn and why is that? but he gets even deeper on lesser-jocked tracks like the anti-police thought-piece who protects us from you (still sadly relevant in 2017), ghetto music and world peace. still as strong and entertaining today as it was almost three decades ago, this new reissue is a perfect way for younger fans to embrace one of the most underrated hip-hop platters of the era.

chicano soul floaters have to be one of the smaller sub genres of my disco collecting but nubia is probably the best example out there. we managed to get the master tapes from writer george rivera so it sounds as good as the day it was recording, bring some floaty sunny soul to your dancefloors â&#128,&#147, 500 only.

the jungle brothers’ 1988 debut, straight out the jungle, was important for many reasons. it was sloppy and goofy but had moments of real focus and social consciousness. it was a true “kitchen sink” record, that caught a rap fanbase enraptured by eric b. & rakim, public enemy and boogie down productions a bit off-guard. also of note, beyond the excellence of the album itself, the jungle brothers were the fulcrum for what would become the native tongues movement – they came first, de la soul and a tribe called quest followed, under their guidance.

since its 2000 release this influential record, which heralded the return of alternative hip-hop, has never seen a vinyl reissue. with that, get on down-always on top of giving the greatest hip-hop albums their due-is proud to present this re-release of the platform. the rhymes are still fresh, the production is still pristine, and the album is now back on vinyl for the first time in 17 years.
