american-born multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer peter broderick will release a new extended player titled “two balloons” on with erased tapes. available as a limited edition 10” vinyl with digital download included, it features the score for the award-winning animation of the same name, inspired by an early recording of his, plus a 9-minute electronic rework on the b-side titled “techno for lemurs”.

daniel brandt, co-founder of acclaimed german ensemble brandt brauer frick, is set to release his second solo album for london imprint erased tapes on october 12th. titled channels, the new record follows the release of the london and berlin based producer’s solo debut eternal something from 2017. the seven-track lp is brandt’s biggest statement yet, with the album’s thrilling avant-garde framework interweaving chord-driven techno, orchestral flourishes, rich electronic textures and hints of dark cinematic pop. following on from eternal something, which captured a contemplative kind of isolationism, with channels brandt set out to create an album that captures the essence of minimalism whilst lending it to a more playful context. after performing and recording steve reich’s six pianos in a group of six, brandt began regularly composing long meditations on the piano, something that permeates the sound of the new record. its frenetic energy and shape-shifting identity was also born out of touring with his new band eternal something — comprised of brandt on piano, drums and synthesisers, pascal bideau on guitar and bass, plus florian juncker on trombone — and a desire to translate both the sound and spiritual unity of their live shows in which musicians locked together to create an intriguing meld of expansive works.

nils oliver frahm + peter ray broderick = oliveray. being musical companions and label buddies for many years, it was just a matter of time until peter broderick and nils frahm would start their first standalone project together. oliveray was born during a time when both artists were living in berlin and frahm supporting broderick on tour. their debut release wonders — a nice little collection of eight musical pieces — was released on erased tapes in 2011. the vinyl release includes a download code.

london-based electronic songwriter ryan lee west’s most personal work to date comes in the form of a mini-album titled night melody.

rival consoles is electro acid-smith ryan lee west from leicester. influenced by impressionists like claude debussy and modern electronic artists such as autechre and squarepusher, he created his unique signature. a playful and brutal mix of idm acid beats and warm, emotive synth string arrangements. in february 2017 he released and toured the more quirky vemeer ep under his second musical alias aparatec, which sold like hot cakes and earned him a lot of fans. the 10 inch vinyl includes a download code.

piano day is an official body created in 2015 by berlin-based composer nils frahm and his closest friends to house various exciting, piano-related projects for everyone to participate in.
the first project revealed by the piano day team in 2015 was the building of what will be the world’s tallest piano: the klavins 450, designed by piano builder david klavins who also created nils’s upright stage piano, the una corda. with over 70 per cent of the 120.000 euro target reached, the piano building is already underway and fans can continue to donate via www.pianoday.org.
it was on the 3.7 meters high klavins m370 that nils recorded eight improvised piano motifs in one sitting, which formed his 2015 album, solo.

nils frahm, born in 1982, had an early introduction to music. during his childhood he was taught to play piano by nahum brodski – a student of the last scholar of tschaikowski. it was through this that nils began to immerse himself in the styles of the classical pianists before him as well as contemporary composers. today nils frahm works as an accomplished composer and producer in berlin. in early 2008 he founded durton studio, where he has worked with peter broderick and dustin o’halloran amongst other fellow musicians.
the three instrumentals, which make up his debut release wintermusik are piano led pieces, coloured with occasional celeste and reed organ parts. the record’s equal measures of sorrowful refrains and uplifting passages, combined with a real intimacy that makes for an album you’ll want to return to again and again. the songs were originally intended as a christmas present for friends and family, hence its winter release on erased tapes. the vinyl release includes a download code.

fans of the berlin based nils frahm are by now familiar with his beguiling live shows where more often than not fellow touring artists are encouraged to join frahm on stage – the likes of rachel grimes, rob lowe of balmorhea as well as label colleagues peter broderick and Ólafur arnalds have all obliged with fascinating results. it will come as no surprise then that nils frahm, an accomplished composer and producer who signed to erased tapes in 2009, has extended his collaborative live musings to encompass the recording studio, working for the first time with noted cellist and fellow berliner anne müller to produce 7fingers.
with their first collective release frahm and müller have built a world where modern classical and electronica collide creating an intoxicating and delicious collection of songs. primarily a pianist nils frahm provides evidence with 7fingers that he can effortlessly turn electric throwing in loops, samples and glitches to accompany and showcase müller on cello. anne müller, a renowned musician noted for her work with the wolf-ferrari-ensemble, phillip boa and recent tours with agnes obel, proves an amp musical partner for frahm.

continuing on from his odyssey ep released in 2013, ryan lee west aka rival consoles creates atmosphere and space whilst exploring waves of sound and rhythm, and the power of colour. with sonne ryan creates music to structure itself around a pulse, rather than the pulse being the defining point.

like many electronic artists, ryan lee west aka rival consoles spent his early years experimenting with idm, glitch and dance, but one consistent element in his musical journey has been his desire to create a more organic, humanised sound. through these experimentations he has found a process of producing electronic music that feels close to this urge. west engages his hands directly with instruments and is very selective about what he then records into the computer. he reduces musical parts even further, leaving enough space around the sound for it to breath.
odyssey is a reflection of west’s quest to create atmosphere and space from minimal arrangements. ‘i don’t like music to sound overly laboured, so i restrict how much is going on. i’m kind of obsessed with the idea of reduction.’ this 5-track ep was mastered by naweed.

for the past two years, nils frahm has been building a brand new studio in berlin to make his 7th studio album titled all melody, which will be released on january 26th, 2018 via erased tapes, before nils embarks on his first world tour since 2015.
since the day nils first encountered the impressive studio of a family friend, he had envisioned to create one of his own at such a large scale. fast forward to the present day and nils is now the proud host of saal 3, part of the historical 1950s east german funkhaus building beside the river spree. it is here where he has spent most of his time deconstructing and reconstructing the entire space from the cabling and electricity to the woodwork, before moving on to the finer elements, building a pipe organ and creating a mixing desk all from scratch with the help of his friends. this is somewhere music can be nurtured and not neglected, and where he can somewhat fulfil his pursuit of presenting music to the world as close to his imagination as possible.

icelandic composer Ólafur arnalds reissues and revives his debut album in form of a special remastered 10th anniversary edition titled eulogy for evolution 2017 —
following its initial release in 2007 and coinciding with Ólafur’s 30th birthday, label founder robert raths gifted the chance for this record to shine a second time.

man kann sich tim mislocks debütalbum -now is the last best time- auf zwei weisen nähern. rein musikalisch betrachtet handelt es sich um ein von der gitarre dominiertes ambient-werk. mit seinen organisch fließenden klanglandschaften ist es hörbar von größen wie brian eno, stars of the lid oder eluvium beeinflusst, was hier durchaus als kompliment verstanden werden darf. abgerundet werden die sechs tracks durch minimal-einflüsse eines max richters oder jonny greenwoods. jenseits der musik ist es mislock aber auch ein konzeptionelles anliegen, mit seinen kompositionen auf die krankheit alzheimer aufmerksam zu machen. -i wanted to raise awareness of the disease-, so der musiker. mit alzheimer kam er durch die erkrankung seines stiefvaters in kontakt. alzheimer ist eine schwere erkrankung des gehirns und die häufigste form der demenzerkrankung. in deutschland werden jährlich rund 120.000 diagnosen gestellt. tendenz: steigend! für familienmitglieder ist alzheimer eine extreme belastung, und so war es auch bei mislocks mutter, die sich aufopferungsvoll um ihren mann kümmerte. und auch daran dockt -now is the last best time- an: -i also wanted to develop a historical document to thank my mother and tell her that her generosity and kindness have not gone unnoticed.-

for the first half of the twentieth century, ellis island stood as the gateway to america. for some twelve million people, it was their first encounter with the land they hoped to call home.
directed by acclaimed artist jr, ellis tells the story of one such migrant. starring robert de niro, the film winds its way through the crumbling hallways of the abandoned ellis island hospital complex, now home to jr’s unframed art installation. it’s a place that reverberates with the hopes and fears of those who passed through it, the echoes especially resonant today.
entwined with the narrative is a score composed by woodkid, performed and co-written by nils frahm. the delicate piano motifs of winter morning i culminate in a crescendo of strings, while the harmonium swells on the b-side are the foundation for de niro’s narration: an encomium for those who shaped modern america. there’s perhaps never been a more fitting time for this story, with all the proceeds going to the sea watch initiative, a non-profit charity dedicated to the protection and rescue of civilian refugees.
