korpus 9 records kicks off with a brand new ep from dubspeeka, featuring four tracks of high impact and atmospheric techno. korpus 9 records is a brand new techno label from russia managed by kwazalski. the main aim of the label is to release fresh and innovative material, not only digitally, but also on vinyl. all the imagery and influences of the label come from an abandoned research station that is deep underwater, where unusual events are happening around it on a constant basis. charged with the first release is shadowy bristolian producer dubspeeka, who has put out his music on drumcode, senso sounds and get physical, runs skeleton recordings and has a fierce techno sound. the opener here is garrison, a driving number with heavy drums and a warm but edgy mood. garrison 2 is more spaced out, with celestial pads baring a feeling of suspense above the firmly rooted drums. garrison 3 then has lumpy drums that bob up and down, as acid lines, water sounds and metallic hits all add atmosphere to the cavernous groove. last of all, garrison 4 is an eerie dub techno track with real drive but also plenty of thoughtful emotions. it closes out a brilliant first ep on this exciting new label.

ltd to 275 copies - for the eighth release on roberto’s fossil archive imprint, a very special collaboration which was produced by roberto and the late trevino (aka marcus intalex) shortly before his tragic passing in 2017 is poised. the release features three original cuts, along with a previously unreleased remix roberto put together of ‘black cat’ which featured on trevino’s album ‘front’. the music speaks for itself. however, to honour marcus, a short poem has been put together by one of his closest friend’s.

hijacked records detroit is feeling inspired after hearing new work from one of our favourite allies in techno, jules wells. we felt it was our duty to deliver this to the people, three new productions from jules with a guest remix from our own antwon faulkner. please enjoy - -silent orchestra.- the title track from jules really set the bar for this release. jules really understands story telling with music and this track transports you to a time in techno that was both hopeful and beautifully heart breaking. a persistent chord progression is wrapped in celestial synth harmonies filing up the space all around you and reaching in. that classic clap is underpinned with a touch of acid, creating an edge. at the 4:33 mark an enchanting and haunting sign wave tells a melodic tragedy. strings come in delicately but wash over you completely. this track is both stunning and devastating.

introducing the fifth release on southern lights, dedicated to releasing hypnotic techno and electronic sounds. alpi is the production duo of gabriel pivaro and daniele alessi. together they present the ‘cerulean flow’ ep, a journey into introspective techno and resonant soundscapes. the a-side features ‘end of matter’, exploring more contemplative structures while the ground loop remix provides both a dark and buoyant interpretation of the original. on the b-side, ‘hidden river’ is opaque, dynamic techno, complete with heavy kicks and calculated pads. ‘chant’ is an ambient passage that completes the introspective journey of the cerulean flow ep.

milyakov makes spacious, dystopian, and wonky reflections on techno that mirror the expansive barrenness and desolation of his high rise-dominated environs. despite keeping a relatively low profile, buttechno still manages to attract significant positive attention, whether providing “spastic electronics and fireball ballistics” in one of the local boiler room event or creating soundtracks for european fashion shows. he has close ties to the area’s design and fashion scenes, and his own artwork fleshes out a singular aesthetic.

emotional rescue returns to the music of dark ambient pioneers o yuki conjugate (oyc) with the reissue of their debut album, scene in mirage released in 1984, it s post-industrial, cold wave overtures mixed with an ambient oeuvre created a compelling album that has gained cult status.

the poverty is violence stable are firmly established now as an essential conductor for rabid, rowdy and downright rasping mechanics from subterranean operators of all shapes and sizes. anonymous but reportedly veteran dutch producer xxx previously appeared on the label in 2016 with the wild noorder scannen 12-, and now returns with a bludgeoning new release. there s a consistent metal grind to the percussion on westzaan doelen, while the synth tones in between tend towards the jagged and abrasive, there s space and poise in the arrangement to lift this out of knuckleheaded noise. -don t go after her- reverberates with clamouring intensity while the beefy chassis of -just the two of you- shimmers under an acidic glaze - this is full-tilt deviant music executed with finesse to match the grime.

betrachtet man die bewegte biografie des can-bassisten holger czukay, könnte man zu dem schluss kommen, der experimentierfreudige musiker sei ein exzentrischer und unbändiger freigeist. doch czukay betonte in interviews immer wieder, dass er in seinem schaffen stets auf einen musikalischen partner angewiesen sei, egal ob in form eines konkreten gegenübers oder durch radiowellen und später das internet. doch die meisten seiner partner waren aus fleisch und blut. sein dem kino verwandtes gesamtwerk schmückt sich mit einer besetzung, die der eines scorcese-films gleichkommt: brian eno, phew, rolf dammers, david sylvian, annie lennox, jah wobble, die kollegen von can – die aufzählung ließe sich noch weit fortsetzen. viele dieser meisterwerke sind heute vergriffen, und so hat es sich das label grönland, das anfang des jahres zu holgers 80. geburtstag bereits die vielbeachtete retrospektive cinema veröffentlichte, zur aufgabe gemacht, holgers musik in remasterten neuauflagen wieder zugänglich zu machen.

approaching complexity is tangent’s sophomore album release for n5md, a label that has seen accomplished releases from the likes of near the parenthesis, bvdub, and loess among others. throughout its nine offerings, the record features a gorgeous contemplative piano that hangs in the air amidst static clicks and dense atmospheres. its delicate touch feels both melancholic and stirring, as exemplified on tracks “equilibrium i (ii & ii)” and “awaken.” the latter cut is a fascinating work comprised of nearly inaudible whisper-song vocals and swelling ambience, its waves a thick froth of a toppled surf underneath tickled ivory. like the rise and fall of a heavy chest, this sound leads to the track’s conclusion, an elongated departure of breath.
a similar ending can be heard on the track “redundancy” which is complemented by the official video premiering at igloo magazine. jittering frames of concrete grass animations are edited to the rhythmic snippy percussion. this is juxtaposed by images of ice cascading off a rocket launch in slow motion and vapor in reverse. see below.
at almost an hour in length tangent’s new album is their most complete sonically, never straying from its core essence. a quality release that in its nature is both bound to existence and is otherworldly in its simplistic beauty.

aar is a project by milan-based producer, dj and designer giorgio di salvo. the first grade lp is his first record under this name, self-released in collaboration with haunter records, the first chapter in a new series dedicated to tonal and rhythmic experimentation. advanced audio research is the ironic definition of this new music course of his, a nod to the large amount of esoteric studio gear accumulated and (ab)used during the years. the project itself is the result of years of study and experimentation with generative music matrices, based on the application of a three dimensional array of variables and unknowns to algorithmic pattern creation. the result is punishing, close to the most radical exploits in ear-wrenching breakcore, footwork and jungle, albeit with a sonic and structural finesse that reveals the producer’s manic dedication. track a-4 is produced in collaboration with somec and b-01 in collaboration with heith, channeling abstract and melancholic vibes into the project. vinyl comes in ultra ltd. edition of 100 copies, each one wrapped in a different hand-printed folder.

by now, the story of how jlin went from working in a steel factory in gary, indiana to being one of the most widely appreciated electronic musicians is well known. “black origami” was one of the most lauded albums last year. seriously prolific and seriously hard-working, she has toured constantly since its may 2017 release and despite being involved in a wide range of projects, still manages to find a balance and time to “do some personal healing and growing.”
here we are over a year later with “autobiography,” the score for her collaboration with renowned british choreographer wayne mcgregor (a collaboration arranged by krakow’s unsound). this isn’t technically her third album (that’s due to arrive in 2019 or 2020), but the soundtrack stands up on its own with all the emotional peaks and troughs of a well-sequenced lp.

this ep combines the veteran talents of kniteforce label owner dj luna-c, with the debut release of kniteforce radio owner, the lowercase, and comes up with something quite unique. a love for heavy beats and inspired by some of the toughest old skool around, the ep delves into the underground in a big way, throwing caution to the wind and layering multiple breakbeats and aggressive stabs together to make a wall of hard sound, just like it was back in the day.
