an enticing taste of the upcoming debut album ‘eventual reality’ by the james l’estraunge orchestra. brainchild of scottish producer ricky reid. pianist on both 6th borough project albums and one half of the soul renegades alongside craig smith. the james l’estraunge orchestra is “the band that never was”. lovingly pieced together from a series of late-night studio sessions with some incredibly talented jazz and classical players. best described as jazz arranged with dance music sensibilities. the james l’estraunge orchestra sound is warm and organic. atmospheric and at times somewhat bleak. a perfect reflection of the remote log cabin in which it was created. immediately iconic both musically and lyrically. ‘closer’ is a powerful commentary on today’s self-regarding. materialistic world with a strong message of hope for a better tomorrow. combining lush. live instrumentation and climactic. cinematic composition. closer’s emotive. almost springsteen-like vocals are performed by ricky reid himself. ‘groovin’ you’ covers a classic from harvey mason: a bass led. heavyweight instrumental jazz-dance workout featuring some impressive brass and woodwind solos bolstered by spine- tingling string swells and tight. rolling drums.

following the success of our recent reissues of classic tracks from the vaults team-jalapeno decided to start 2018 strong with another 7inch release of two certified bangers from our very own breaks legends skeewiff. our dear label co-founders and creative minds whose four skeewiff albums set the agenda for the jalapeno funk machine that you know and love alex rizzo and elliot ireland have never been found wanting. these guys are the godfathers of the lounge and breaks scenes. they put the fun into funk. and if rumours are to be believed they could mix before they could walk! from the very first opening horns salvo on mexican flyer you know this track means business. a driving bassline and in-your-face drums provide the backdrop for all sorts of sonic madness with dj cuts. horn solos and breaks galore. it s a bona-fide fiesta that fits neatly in your 45s bag. with this little number in the arsenal the only worry that the djs will have is the stampede to the dancefloor. over on the flipside delta dawn sees the guys get a little help from a famously little lady with one of the most recognisable voices in country music. but make no mistake this is no barn dance… breaks. bass and a healthy dose of hammond wizardry inject the funk into proceedings to complete this 7inch club weapon of mass destruction. it s a double act that s up there with the best of them and a must have for fans of jalapeno and high quality party music

the best r&b songwriter and soul singer that most people have never heard of. sam dees has written songs for countless artists. including gladys knight. aretha franklin. whitney houston. george benson. the temptations. teddy pendergrass. millie jackson. jackie wilson. the manhattans. regina belle. kc & the sunshine band. willie clayton. and many others. he’s also a pretty fine singer. having recorded for the chess. atlantic. polydor. and sss labels. and he had a nice string of his own hits in the 1970s.
his 1975 atlantic album “the show must go on” has long been regarded by southern soul aficionados as one of the best of the genre. sounding a bit like a deeper-voiced curtis mayfield (in both style and theme). dees sings with assurance. wisdom. passion. and a whole lot of soul here. songs like “child of the streets”. “troubled child”. & “what’s it gonna be”. share mayfield’s commitment to social commentary. and dees knows his way around a love song. too.

known for housing a famous beastie boys sample. the reissue of the 1975 funk and fusion classic funk factory brings peerless polish and american players together for a groovy. eccentric journey. it was an album cut from this lp that captured a particular corner of the music-geek imagination for more than 40 years: “rien ne va plus.” from the self-titled 1975 album. had its reckoning with the canon when the dust brothers sampled major chunks of it for beastie boys’ “car thief.” “rien ne va plus” is a banger. all post-head hunters springy synth-bass. as for the rest of the album. funk factory can stray pretty far into the cheerier excesses of prog-jazz. it emphasizes the alluring strangeness of its more experimental moments. like the hallucinogenic haunted-house tour of “lilliput” or the banshee james brown vocal riffs on “horsing around.” “rien ne va plus” remains the top highlight. this album is proof that a core of musicians schooled in jazz but culturally steeped in the folk and classical traditions of eastern europe could. at least once. put out something that fit well with the crossover sound of the times while being unafraid to dive into freeform weirdness.

does this need an explanation? my two favourite dj sides from stark reality catalog. for say brother i fixed the eq and made it a bit more club friendly also editing the crazy tripped out ending out which maybe controversial but always freaked the dance floor out so i cut that out to gain some extra volume and bass. on the flip we got bustin out of doors which has always been a favourite warm-up record again without the random ending. to make it extra cute i used the o.g hoagy carmichael’s music shop illustration. 500 only. no repress.

the album shows how the ideals of the civil rights movement. black power and black nationalism influenced the evolvement of radical african-american music in the united states of america in the intensely political and revolutionary period at the end of the 1960s following the assassinations of malcolm x. martin luther king and the rise of the black panther party.

mister mellow moves further away from the synthesizer-heavy sounds of the recent washed out releases and more band-driven sound of his work on iconic labels sub pop in america. and domino in europe. on mister mellow. greene draws from the experimental collage techniques of musique concrète and plunderphonics artists such as the residents. combining styles as diverse as free jazz. house. hip-hop and psych together with interlude-esque voiceover samples. often pulled from anonymous youtube vlogs. he creates a busy. chaotic. and caricaturish mix that mirrors the claustrophobic. hyper-stimulated psyche so familiar to young adults. as he continues to carve out his innovative sonic identity. influenced by the world around him but unafraid to buck trends. it’s fitting that greene has partnered with legendary hip hop label stones throw records. long a home for beat-loving musical rebels. his approach to releasing music is every bit as individual. too: in an environment where compiling singles into an album format or working with a single video director are the norm. greene has chosen to commission eleven different artists to bring the visual aspect of his fully-realised album project to life. on mister mellow. washed out steers clear of emotion to empathise with the minutiae of the world around him. ive been much less interested in sentimentality and emotion for the past couple of years. says greene. in some ways. i think its a reaction against getting older and having more responsibilities. maybe i’m just nostalgic for a time in my life where i could just relax and block out the world for a moment. though mister mellow is an intensely personal album. its ideas and observations speak to the lived experience of so many young adults. an experience that we come to see as both funny and sad.
