a little over six years ago, let s play house because, in earnest, with a 12-inch called indoor pool. fittingly, the track it revolved around was by runaway, the duo comprised of marcos cabral and jacques renault, and featured remixes by some tight friends of the imprint, beautiful swimmers, slow hands, and soft rocks. we thought it d be fun to celebrate our birthday for once, but not with something too obvious (e.g. a compilation) or too involved (e.g. a warehouse party blowout). what we came up with is this, a 10-inch that reflects a little of the past into the present. appropriately, it includes edits by two of the artists on that debut ep. runaway s is a dusted-off and remixed secret weapon from the act s early days while soft rock s is classic soft rocks, albeit from a more current vintage (it was recorded this year). both absolutely rock. a little twisted, a little tilted, a little tipsy, but, as always, tight and tidy. funny how, since 2009, everything has changed and nothing has changed at all for this label of ours.

the passport to paradise gang are in fine form as they serve up four more tripped-out disco edits for the globally-minded savant. we take sail with the excellent thru wit waitin, a beefed-up guitar chugger reminiscent of 70s aor in its steady percussive work and misty sax solo. it s the guitar line that really shines here, lifting the tune into funk transcendence in the bridge. anybody out there reaches out to the disco trippers with its northern italian cosmic kitsch feel: starry-eyed synth pads float above reverb-soaked guitar musings and playful french vocal samples. a particular highlight. on the flip, ptp take things south with a soulful west african shuffler guaranteed to elicit some arresting footwork. the ep leaves us with resounding vibrations from the far east: jp wave explores ethereal planes, building up a dense rhythmic fabric punctuated by bass stabs and ornamental chimes. this is a clever bunch of edits for the more discerning selectors and enthusiasts out there- act fast.

black rox is back with 2 more sneaky soft rocks specials that have somehow been liberated from locked cd wallets and released into the wild for general consumption. the a side sabu dance combines horns, flutes & percussion on this killer slice of midtempo funk from africa via berlin. this has been thoroughly road tested by soft rocks at their kinfolk night & never fails to get a great response from the dancefloor. side b. don t worry it s not the tantric one s ode to voyeurism but a rare as hens teeth slice of uk. reggae at is s finest. adjustments have been made sensitively and sounds have been chosen to carefully match those from the appropriate era. a perfect track for blissful summer evenings (yeah whatever!).

the soft rocks collective feature twice on the upstart black rox label with two heavily tribal remixes for a so far unknown artist. the soft rocks take on *filaw* is wrapped in horns and jungle sounds - not too far off a 1970s brian jackson and gil scott heron collaboration. on the flip is a possible talking heads reference in *once in a life time*, which gathers mesmeric african drums and percussion, grooving in harmony to ritualistic chant. a mohican david byrne perhaps?

long time disco sorcerer ray mang has taken mirador de las estrellas to a beautiful place, utilizing the steal drum as a hypnotic hook and editing jorge socarras memorable spanish vocals down to an effective sigh. if there ever a track for your indian summer, this is it. on the flipside, the boys from cage & aviary sprawl out the original extended version of their tough and dubby bonus beats (this bomb is exclusive to this vinyl release). if you know whats best, youll not sleep on this one there is nothing more pleasing than completing a set.

hot off the heals of their debut >we hunt buffalo now<, the soft rocks gang dishes out >magic milk<, and utterly sleazy weekend dancefloor monster serving as the second single in the series surrounding their imminent debut album, >the curse of soft rocks<. guest vocals are once again provided by san francisco post-punk hero jorge socarras (vocalist of indoor life and songwriter for patrick cowley). remix duties on side-b are provided this time by washington dcs rising stars the beautiful swimmers. their mid-tempo coconut dub takes the percussive nuances that are deep in the original and made them centerpiece, surrounding it all with loose house instrumentation that oddly achieves a tropical vibe.

soft rocks finish their very productive year in the studio with 2 raw analog dj friendly house cuts... march of the dark & light brigade is a rough acidic cut that builds, drops and builds again whilst tutsis dance is a slice of funky craziness with an old school house bass line that gets deep half way through and peaks with some sublime strings.

the no stress express rolls back into town with their second offering for rogue cat sounds, where they pick you up and transport you to the sunnier climes and headier days of 1980s caribbean. steel drums, loose-limbed percussion, lazy synth stabs and carefree basslines, all infused with a whiff of woodbines, jerk chicken and dark rum. as the sun sets, the party picks up momentum. barefoot beach dancing.

after a best-selling debut record, low budget family - an independent moscow-based record label run by the crew behind the legendary shop&bar denis simachev formation return, and how! king solomons mines from simple symmetry is quite a classic in the making - a deceptively simple workout that reminds of mid 80s boyd jarvis jams, but shot through with 21st century twists and turns, that amplify those tough drum machines, anthemic afro elements, chants and marimba riffing. add a truly dynamic arrangement and you have a dancefloor dynamite! it is disco royalty on the remix tip as soft rocks & brennan green step up. as expected, given the incredible ingredients, the two of them shine. soft rocks set up a classic euro flavoured afro-trance workout, utilising the parts against a far more electronic and unrelenting backdrop, building to a sweaty, strobe-lit finale. brennan green may be less than prolific these days, but he is dependable as ever here. working up a synth-soaked, prelude style dub, whose classic elements will work the floor from here to zanzibar…

last year s acclaimed sea power & change ep, a melancholic project from the mind of celebrated portuguese powerhouse tiago, is now revisited through the lens of three essential esp institute artists. side a gives us a take on strange fruit by our heroes soft rocks — a smacked up dub/boogie rendition leaving the beautifully dark mood intact whilst twisting the the rhythms toward the tough side. on side b, secret circuit (eddie ruscha of laughing light of plenty, and soon to release his solo release for esp) stuffs wild combination in his saddle and takes us for a ride through a futuristic version of the wild west with a funky bassline and distant whistles, only to be rounded out by a blissed-out epic re-rendering of yesterday is gone by somberero galaxys jonny nash. its a family affair.

hey you lucky bastards, here is another re-edit package for you. no wait come back, this one is actually worth parting with your hard earned for. instead of the usual, frankly ridiculous and unnecessary edits of michael jackson, mgmt, chic and mark morrison (!) and the likes cluttering up the shelves of your local vinyl emporium, we have got some landmark, ahead of its time, rare, french psychedelic disco from jean pierre massiera to get your chops round.

this is the first release from the newly formed roots unit who are piers harrison & christopher galloway a duo who are mainly known for being half of soft rocks.
