next up on aus music is the welcome return of a good friend and label regular - the ever ascendant marquis hawkes. having released 4 eps on aus thus far, he makes his return in the form of a blazing, floor-focused 2 track ep which sits neatly with previous outings on the label. ‘the basement is burning’ takes it’s name from a near-fateful experience stemming from an electrical fire in hawkes’ home which culminated in him and his family being evacuated from a 5th floor balcony. having ensured the safety of his family, he made a dash across berlin to make a 10am live show, a few days later with the power back on ‘the basement is burning’ was born. the title track kicks off with splashy, live drum samples that are armoured with electronic layers before a feel-good piano lick glides into the mix. bursting synths are introduced before ducking strings chords bring the track to an ecstatic conclusion. ‘tower block boogie’ then tumbles short funk samples through bold drums as a fervid sense of tension burns throughout.

this sublime four-track ep sees the london-based italian-born dj/producer kick the year off with a bang, following a highly successful 2016. the eps title track the basement shit commences the release, offering up a stomping bass heavy raw beat groove, a spoken-word hip-hop-inspired vocal, ever growing warped sound effects and a twisted synth-riff. next, the uk dance music pioneer skream steps up to provide a stunning remix, taking the basement shit into a whole different direction by utilizing some of the original s key elements but adding a much more techier feel to the record. in addition to the original and skream s remix, a special dj tool version of the track is also included within the package.

wayne gardiner is something of an unsung hero in the deep house world. his productions on numerous labels (nervous, strictly rhythm, ibadan etc) under his own name, as classic man, logic, track masters and many more all have the perfect balance of rough and smooth, deep pads, jazzy keys, floating melodies and chopped vocal samples are all underpinned by tough driving beats and percussion creating his trademark sound. the ep features 2 mixes of killer a-side come on, do anything, 2 mixes of the slamming b-side cut i need you so bad and finally the basement jam which rounds things out. 5 tracks of pure 1992 nyc garage, one for true aficionados and house heads!

break out belgian house producer sjef wanders follows recent heavily supported appearances on new yorks nurvous records and 124 recordings with *dont front*, a two track 12 inch primed for club play on the deso records label. *dont front* is deep and dubby house music emboldened by banging low end and it is well complemented by a remix from label owner desos. the dane takes things deep in typical fashion, adding a little new jersey swing and flavour to proceedings.
