la dame noir is one of marseille s most reliable outposts for serious disco-flavoured grooves both in the club and as a label, and now they make the leap to vinyl with a crucial collection of remixes from serious heads. pete herbert steps up first to rework m.u.s.i.q.u.e s -over to you-, turning the original into a simmering, noirish burner with speak and spell vox in the foreground. meanwhile herbert s take on nouveau rom s -timide comme un ange- is a looped-up dream of a groove that positively takes off when the peak section kicks in. dj steef then echoes the remix choices on the b-side, subtly edging the nouveau rom track into an even airier version before creating an emotional twist on -over to you-.

from the sun kissed shores of brazil and the wonderful starlit nights of the mareh festival comes a new label, mareh music. mareh festival was started by a small group of friends whos only aim was to escape the big city, take an amazing sound system to a remote and beautiful part of the country, and then party together with friends and great music. it has grown since into a week long annual event featuring international djs playing alongside talented residents, and still has the same commitment to real quality and fun. mareh music is born from the soundtrack to those parties, and is launched to mark the festivals tenth birthday. so you can expect to hear beach bar boogie, disco-tinged dance floor movers and deep electronic groovers.

following their recent track on reduxs pick & mix vol. 1, the disco legend that is pete herbert and melbournes golden fleece further cement their collaboration with this full ep on space walker records. >ivory waves< is a 90s influenced cut of uplifting piano-driven balearic house, complete with lush cosmic flourishes, whilst >the bells of hackney< is a more low-slung, but no less powerful production. initially combining a snaking live bassline and spaced-out arpeggios, the track builds to a crescendo as heavily flanged piano and tights guitar licks come into play. the b-side meanwhile serves up two remixes of >ivory waves<, lithuanias downtown party network recompose it as an even more-good time anthem (if such a thing is possible) with their trademark melodic charm, while slovenias sare havlicek takes the track into deeper territory bringing the thick bassline teasing the melody with dubbed out stabs, slowly bringing the huge piano line in before dropping it with force, taking the anthem potential of the original and running with it.

the fourth release from palms & charms sees the return of label co-owner barnaby bruce, ruminating on the perils of fine fabric care. we ve all been there – a lengthy session on the dancefloor playing havoc with the pile of your velvet coat. faced with this dilemma, barnaby reaches for the battered volume, passed down through untold generations of his family, detailing archaic yet uncannily effective methods for extending the life of even the most exquisite textiles. as he does so, the percussive jazz-tinged boogie of sweat on velvet takes over his mind, unleashing a wave of dancefloor euphoria. not to be outdone, pete herbert (reverso 68), unveils his own masterful fabric care techniques, providing a remix that will starch your collar and shake out the creases. not the same clothes, but something brand new. freshly attired, barnaby begins to notice curious and somewhat unsettling noises coming from the next room. he gingerly opens the door, and is confronted with a seance in full swing. strangers sitting around his dining table wait with baited breath for word from the other side. but the unearthly howling of tortured spirits is quickly silenced by the devilish groove of seance fiction. as the arp makes its entrance, every soul is up and dancing. finally, barnaby bruce also provides the eminently useful go go percussion dub of sweat on velvet – rounding out a sartorially elegant ep with something for everyone, from sceptics to lost souls.

what better way to follow up andy meechams (chicken lips / emperor machine) huge gino fontaine originals than a duo of remixes from balearic chieftains pete herbert & stratus as one half of reverso 68 alongside phil mison, and in his own right pete has been behind a ton of mesmerising sunrise and sunset workouts, and he’s more than delivered here - crisp and club ready percussion, those stark punk-funkin’ guitars and his trademark synth work all conspire to cook up a storm on the floor martin jenkins and mat anthonys stratus outfit (remember their superb *spring tide ep* on aficionado last year ?) take a pop at the sublime konkondo on the flip and what a masterpiece it is ! a ten minute, utterly absorbing and expertly evolving piece, which flips the darker elements of the original into a mesmerising, cinematic, early 90s style balearic epic.

the most favourite of italian producers, bottin, returns with an old project. tinpong is a collaboration between bottin and swiss singer joy freypong. these tasty masters were just gathering dust on an old hard disc in venice but when we heard them we just had to get these gems out there.
the first of the tinpong material is a cover version of a duran duran classic. set dials to 1982, >new religion< is of course one of the standout tracks from the classic >rio< album.

the polytechnics ep is the second release on df by silver city following the superb dubby ep from 2006. on the a side, the title track polytechnics has electrofunk vibes blending perfectly with new wave sensibilities. think greg wilson mixing up gary numan and you wont be far off. it rocks! and on the flip, nu disco don pete herbert (reverso 68/lsb) cuts up pendulo a heavily arrpegiated disco stormer and transforms it into yet another disco bomb. this was an edit that pete knocked together for his own dj sets and we loved it so much we just had to put it on the vinyl. last, but in no way least, is victoria jam which is a no nonsense heads down groover of a track that will get your dancefloors rocking. seriously good music. enjoy! plays by: ashley beedle, llorca, fabrice lig, electric press, reverso 68, munk, murray richardson, ajello, dubious...
