family, fish, shapes. these are only three of the many topics that stefan streck aka the micronaut recently devoted himself to within his releases on labels such as acker records or analogsoul. always with a clear line, but never intellectualising, is how the multi-instrumentalist and producer pursues his scientific curiosity in terms of sounds. his tracks are elaborate and yet danceable. sometimes they are composed minimally, sometimes they are utterly playful. within just a few bars, subtle sequences transform to energetic roller coaster rides since the micronaut loves having a game with contrasts. his newest ep on freude am tanzen proves this anew.

the micronaut vertont jenen moment, wenn das quietschen der s-bahn und die schritte auf dem nassen asphalt im dämmrigen himmel über den straßen verhallt sind. jenen moment, wenn die verlorenen seelen der abgase und bremslichtern zwischen den häusern umherirren, hinter deren leuchtenden fenster sich träume und ausstiegsfantasien fürs bett vorbereiten. wenn alle nah beieinander sind und doch jeder für sich ist, wenn die stadt ruhig wird und in den köpfen ihrer bewohner immer noch geschäftiges treiben herrscht. irgendwo zwischen bass music, electronica und pop findet stefan streck die rhythmisch-melodische entsprechung dieser epischen atmosphäre. dass er dabei einen ausgeprägten hang zur tragödie hat, das findet nicht nur in der leidenschaftlich-impulsiven geste seiner live-auftritte ausdruck, sondern auch auf forms, seinem dritten studio-album auf acker records, vertrieben durch kompakt. der fiebrige spannungszustand seines nächtlichen stadt-blues nimmt zwischen momenten der gedankenverlorenen melancholie und endorphingeladener aufbruchstimmung immer wieder neue formen an.

following on from the the likes of the excellent son.sine re-issue, delsin kicks off 2015 with another one in the form of micronism s steps to recovery ep. originally released on nurture records in 1999, the ep, which comes in black and limited coloured vinyl, is a bonafide deep house classic from the short live career of new zealander denver mccarthy. engaging causelss mercy is a contemplative, atmospheric affair with soft drums and celestial pads that could roll and roll forever and you d never get tired. the quiet mind is just as deep, but the spiralling pads and rippling melodies here are more colourful and charming. both tracks are hugely spacious, luxurious affairs whilst constructing space on the flip is a more stripped back and humid number that is more enclosed and oppressive for cosy back room spaces. finally, the title track is a playful, elastic house track with heartwarming hooks and pinging drums. this tasteful ep shines a light on some definitively deep tracks that really do deserve the attention that will now inevitably come their way.

is it his love for details that made him known as the micronaut? at least the atmosphere of his productions evolves from a multitude of intricate elements. these little bits and pieces might be of very different nature but together they complement each other in perfect harmony, creating the big picture, the panorama of a soundscape that is one of a kind.

wie der bootsmann auf der scholle sitzt the micronaut inmitten der tosenden klangfluten unserer zeit. mit versonnenem lächeln lauscht er dem rhythmischen murmeln, angelt hin und wieder einen akkord heraus, mischt ihn mit den bunten fantasiefrüchten seines kleinen eilands und kocht daraus sein ganz eigenes süppchen. diesmal serviert er uns einen durchweg lebensbejahenden hörgenuss namens what else, in dem sich männlicher und weiblicher gesang über entspanntem aber erbaulichem groove vereinen. im remix dazu orientiert sich mollono.bass am song-orientierten charakter des originals, bringt das ganze aber etwas mehr den punkt, an welchem der sound auf der tanzfläche optimal ist. die b-seite fischt dann in den gründen des friedfisch, und zieht zwei nie gehörte remixes zum gleichnamigen debütalbum von the micronaut aus der tiefe. da ist zum einen die einlullend-hypnotische dub techno nummer der lake people, die mairenke auf stehendem subbass anrichten. und zum anderen das perlende klangspiel und die sprudelnden, gebrochenen beats von map.aches version der rotfeder

just like different fishes can be found in different grounds, also the acoustic tales of the micronaut take place in different regions of the emotional landscape: sometimes warm, sometimes fresh – sometimes calm and stagnant, sometimes lively and floating. and just like all the fishes are connected by the water surrounding them, also this album has its connecting element: a very individual and independent groove. this groove comes with a lot of surprises. for instance, when a guitar chord from the acoustic band atmosphere of gruen- dling suddenly gets tangled up in a loop and introduces an unexpected but coherent change into the direction of broken, electronic beats. or when the emotional world music elements of schleie mix up with exciting halfstep rhythms. sophi- sticated arrangements, unusual instrumentations and intense emotions- these are the main attributes of friedfisch . though the experimental character of this work does not really aim the dance floor, it still keeps connected to this place: two sensitive remixes by mollono.bass represent the upbeat for an entire series, being exclusively released on vinyl.
