after last year’s “tribal trouble”, french duo nummer strike back on their own nummer music label with “deep obsessions”, a three track excursion through early breakbeat ambiences and hypnotic soundscapes

the boys from nummer are back on their own nummer music imprint with a fresh new ep! following a busy start of the year with *to the d* and their first nitejams 12 inch, the duo offer three 808-heavy cuts and continue to blur the line between techno and their influences. from the acid-infused *street war success* to the more electro *golden age* and gloomy *downtown breukelen*, this is another vital release from the two londoners!

>the voices< is the debut 12 inch from bobby and annie. drawing on their experiences as residents at the mint club, uk, the pair have crafted a versatile ep that sits as comfortably in a peak time set as it does on a hazy 6am dance floor. taken from a collection of vocal out-takes the voices have been cleverly obscured through various production techniques and layered around drums and old school analogue synth lines to unique effect. the results are two haunting, hypnotic, yet upbeat dj tools. the title track, >voices<, uses deftly interwoven vocal samples as the focus and driving hook. shuffled percussion takes a back seat amidst a discordant, attention-grabbing synth interlude that harks back to the playful garage sound of90s chicago house. the outcome is dramatic, intense and functional. on the b-side, >loose ends<, is a more rugged affair that gives the bass and drums centre stage. the vocals are pitched and trippily float in and out of the track whilst the familiar sound of fairlight stabs punctuate the groove. the effect is eerie, yet accessible, and rounds off this stunning ep.

the in the box e.p. is a fine example of niedermeier & whiteheads no-nonsense style, combining melodic, muscular grooves with deep basses and balearic percussion, the e.p. is a slice of raw tech and deep house class. with a relentless funky beat, in the box pays homage to classic tech-house form whilst maintaining a tracky musical edge that highlights the pairs dj background. with their penchant for diversity, short fuse is something truly unique, quirky pads and filtered fx gives this track a deep house vibe whilst a smoky lead ensures the techy theme is maintained. tales of old has all the essences of modern deep techno, it rolls along with a straightforward beat and a clean unpretentious production flavour. the simple vocal stabs and smooth fx hits are driven along by a wonderfully deep timpani that shakes some air but never interferes with the warm, round sub bass pining the groove together. lastly is out of place, a deep grooving track with an aggressive manner. through a series of dynamic peaks and troughs, technoid percussion and funky vocal hits, this track provides an appropriate addition to this perfect release

nummer comes back with a fresh artist called pherox aka tim querengaesser. pherox gives an impression of the most interesting modern club music today. each track on the pandorra ep oscillate between two sides. on the one hand you feel strong rythm and percussion textures, on the other hand pherox shows his passion of emotive and electrical moments which loom large.
