bongo joes 45s series continues, presenting for the first time music from the past. this fifth single focusses on legendary algerian kabyle rock band abranis founded in 1967. the band pioneered the fusion of chaabi (traditional) music with 60s-70s western rock, proudly singing in their own berber kabyle language while wearing hippy rockers outfits. their shows in deeply influenced by pan-arabism conservative algeria were often cancelled by governors and the band once was arrested by the police, generating riots. they kept on playing and recording until mid 90s. this 45 presents two majors tracks from the band: chenar le blues, released in 1977, was a big hit on algerian national radio. the bands response to the doors. avehri, released in 1983, shows the band s obsession with merging different music styles with the north african tradition. this one goes strangely reggae.

following an impressive, low-key cassette release on kitty play in 2016, amsterdam-based artist aan zee makes the leap to vinyl with this appearance on pleasure wave, a label which has already made some waves with releases from g-marie, jonny 5 and miskotom. the aan zee sound is a lot to digest, spanning all kinds of cosmic funk, sky-scraping electronics and outernational influences, often all fired off at the same time. just sink your teeth into -persona/funny berber- for a taste and you ll understand. -vacation- is equally adventurous, with all kinds of melodic layering and instrument flexing in pursuit of an exotic new brew that doesn t shirk on the groove.

they say that to know where you are going, you must know where you come from. in 2008 akkachar founded the rwina label, naming it after the word for never-ending chaos in the tamazight dialect of his north african ancestors. over the next five years he let the chaos unfold, building the label into an unpredictable yet reliable power house of dance and electronic music. today he turns to his roots for his own debut release, a three-track ep inspired by and dedicated to the amazigh (or berber) culture found in moroccos rif mountains.
