vox populi field works vol.ii is the second part of a broader project entitled ‘field works’, in which the label travels to different locations in the world in order to collect sounds, eventually creating an archive of some of the finest and humblest musical traditions. inspired by academic methods proper to ethnomusicology and ethnography, this project’s aim is to showcase the diversity of our human cultural heritage, which is threatened by accelerated globalization and homogenization of the worldwide musical spectrum.
this record is the result of a twenty-day trip to japan. led by anthropologist and label founder fred scharf and his vox populi records crew, this is the second instalment on the ‘field works’ series. this 12’’ vinyl release is a collection of field recordings, jam sessions, studio recordings, street soundscapes, religious rituals, fighting championships and wedding ceremonies, all of which were remixed and reinterpreted by japan blues, tim karbon, hiroaki oba & shizka (aka inoue shirabe), delivering tracks whose core represents a wide array of traditional japanese sounds.

after hosting farron to perform for a showcase in matera, south italy, and following a solid, immediate aural connection with the crew, xcpt now invites the bavaria-based artist and shaw cuts shaolin master to submerse himself in his talent of wielding harmonious synths, championing percussion and corruptive basslines for the label’s third release, ‘bistro baggio. the release offers three original cuts plus an interpretation of one of the tracks, paneth, by label honcho nothus, exploring calculated rhythms and sounds that delve into varying atmospheres and transporting you from a blacked-out club to a quaint starlit stream in the woods.

2015 has been a huge year for dj-kicks, marking both 20 years of the series as well as our 50th release. but far from slowing down, we’re already looking ahead to another incredible mix from one of our favorite artists. over the past decade, seth troxler has become a visionary and authentic voice in dance music, his jovial personality cutting through the noise and continually playing by his own rules. growing up between detroit and chicago, his musical education carries enviable credentials, with his stepdad a local radio personality who championed the early sounds of house music. true to troxler’s character, the mix has a whimsical nature and a thoughtful and timeless narrative, bearing a tenacious episode for the dj-kicks series that gives a true insight into the man behind the well-preened moustache and cowboy antics.
