producer victor “ticklah” axelrod is back with another supple reggae delight. after the success of the inversions last collaboration with bob & gene, axelrod once again takes a seat in the producer’s chair, this time with a tune a little deeper in the catalogue. originally tweezed from the beautiful mo do tape boondoggle, back in ‘05 - ‘06, this single has been a long-time favorite of the daptone family.

the frightnrs escort daptone into the world of long-playing reggae with both the sweetest and the roughest record of the decade. crafted under the meticulous eye of black-belt reggae mastermind/producer victor axelrod (aka ticklah), nothing more to say is a rocksteady masterpiece the likes of which has not reared it s head since the golden era of studio one. however, you ll find no imitation here - none of the faux-jamaican cliches of lesser reggae bands. like all things daptone, this record is above all soulful and honest.

manuel tur returns to delusions following his recent classic most of this moment on freerange and proceeds to throw another whacking great curveball for those who have think theyve got his game sussed. its quite safe to say the last year or so manuel has continued to push and redifne himself as a producer, refusing to stick to one sound or repeat himself which has resulted in some amazing releases aswell as some fruitful collaborations. recent remixes for permanent vacation, diynamic and dixons philomena label all display his deeper, left-of-centre and more techno-edged sound. here on delusions we have the (bi) polar opposite in the form of the foolin ep. the title track is a beautiful slice of soul-drenched house which goes for a classic sound with simple horn chords, rolling bass and incessant claps spicing up the groove. a simple vocal refrain is spun in like a dj drops an accapella and once heard this will be stuck in your head for days. a firm fireside favourite with all of us here at dog. theres also an instrumental version of foolin for those with vocalitis. flipping over we have the traveller which sees manuel head down slightly more familiar territory with a heavy, lo-slung groove providing the backdrop for some axelrod-style strings and horns, live bass and floating vocal adlibs. a subtley haunting soundtrack feel pervedes as the arrangement developes but the relentless driving beats make sure this track never strays far from the dancefloor.

repress - folk-jazz composer/arranger arthur verocai was born in rio de janeiro. he has created challenging arrangements and compositions for brazilian artists jorge ben, ivan lins, leny andrade and gal costa. in 1972 verocai recorded a self-titled solo lp. it is a stunningly innovative effort. it puts verocai into a rarified field with the heavy string oriented music of charles stepney, david axelrod and frank zappa. released in a period marked by the brazilian military government, the album fared poorly. following its re-issue in 2003 the album has become a highly influential oft sampled classic (see ludacris, mf doom and little brother). the performance of this seminal 1972 record in its entirety brought the capacity luckmann crowd to a stand still. according to verocai, >he had never played the record, alive or dead!< the music has been mixed by verocai himself in rio. history turned on its head and musical justice served.

the third in struts inspiration information studio collaboration series brings together an intriguing pairing between one of africas great bandleaders, mulatu astatke, with the next level musicianship of the heliocentrics collective from the mighty roster of stones throw / now again. known primarily through the successful ethiopiques album series and the film soundtrack to jim jarmuschs ?broken flowers, mulatu astatke is one of ethiopias foremost musical ambassadors. his selfstyled ethio-jazz sound flourished during the swinging addisÑ era of the late 60s as he successfully fused western jazz and funk with traditional ethiopian folk melodies. the heliocentrics have become known as one of the uks foremost free-thinking collectives of musicians, inspired by a wide palette covering sun ra, james brown, david axelrod and all manner of psych, afro and eastern sounds. the collective have featured on records by madlib and dj shadow. now a fixture within the stones throw / now again roster, they forged their own genre-breaking directions in the astral analogue groove on their 2007 debut album, out there. a number of tour dates around the release and headline slots at festivals throughout 2009 have been confirmed.

the korvids are a catholic glasgow collective, spearheaded by singer-songwriter james grant and gordy goudie. they marry a love of disco with the influence of deodato, axelrod, csny, miles and anything else that takes their fancy. the debut single from the korvids -beach coma- was released in 2015 and its summertime groove is a well known track on the us sirius fm networks.
