marcus lambkin aka shit robot returns with his third full length album for dfa records, entitled what follows. the 11-track album was conceived and recorded at marcus’ home studio in a small town outside stuttgart, worked on in various new york studios and then mixed over the course of 11 intense & coffee-fuelled days in dfa label mate juan maclean’s new hampshire studio. the album follows lambkin’s previous long-players, from the cradle to the rave (2010) and we got a love (2014), which drew plaudits from the likes of the guardian and pitchfork, and featured reggie watts and james murphy among the array of contributors.

shit robot returns with his first new material since the release of his debut long-player, >from the cradle to the rave<. after spending much of 2010 and 2011 touring the globe with his live show – including a string of dates opening/performing with lcd soundsystem during their final shows in nyc - the rebooted robot is back with >the green machine<. the first result of his stuttgart/new york studio adventures is a double-header of dancefloor jams, >teenage bass b/w >space race<, which is released on vinyl and digital on dfa on may 21 2012. its the first in a series of releases called >the green machine<, which will culminate in an album early next year. lead cut >teenage bass< rides a rude ebm bassline and rave alert sirens, before expanding further with key changing chords and a defining arpeggiator. the hypnotic >space race< is a distant relative of 2007s chasm – a meandering, melodic, star-gazing robo-techno workout

from the very outset, the m.c.d.e. remix of shit robots >answering machine< picks up in a completely different realm from marcus lambkins original, which appears on his 2010 debut, from the cradle to the rave. the stuttgart-based producer has replaced janine >planningtorock< rostrons slowly rising vocal opener with outerspace emanations that fade as they drift into a constellation of wide house grooves and deep bass. rostrons own pizzo remix is up next, and in (a)typical fashion, she takes the song and shifts its mood by clearing away the dancier elements of its predecessor in favor of a foundation of strings in every form: plucked pizzicato notes, low cellos tones, and high pitched violins that flit through. last up is another rostron creation, the whisper remix, which actually outpaces lambkins version in bpm, but is lighter all the same. here, she uses synths almost as a wash of white noise – a whisper, if you will – and only drops heavier vocals here and there along the songs rustling path.

in its original incarnation, shit robots -losing my patience- – a choice cut from 2010s from the cradle to the rave — strikes a balance between iciness and warmth, with hot chip frontman alexis taylors soulful vocals melting the tracks frosty synthlines. now, hot chip and unabombers remix the track and redefine its feel. hot chips new take on the single mystifies the original with deeply cut grooves, squelching bass and taylors heartbreaking, trilling vocals, pushed to lonesome front and center. the whole procession builds to a climax of chiming keys, striking percussion and synth melodies that corkscrew firmly into your head. the uks unabombers – the dj duo of luke cowdrey and justin crawford – take a cosmic approach, laying down synths that stretch toward infinity and holding off on vocals till near the songs midpoint. the dub remix gains traction and energy in its latter stages, with a heady mix of piercing synth squeals and taylors vocalizations set on repeat, like a mantra urging party goers to the dancefloor

head-turning singles >tuff enough< and >take em up< from marcus >shit robot< lambkins fantastic debut, from the cradle to the rave, get reinvented by two of the most talented dj/producers working in electronic music. on the a-side is germanys michael mayers epically inventive take on >tuff enuff<. less muscular than lambkins original, the remix softens things up by placing supple keys under the hardened exterior. the climax is an otherworldly listening experience that literally builds to take off. on the flip, john talabots remix of >take em up< starts like a laidback house party that builds just enough energy when its relocated under disco lights. the haunting opening — a swirling, ghostly blend of elliptical vocals and handclaps — leads to a sonic journey that is as smooth as it is wholly entrancing. this fantastic coupling of tracks is being produced in very short supply, so snap them up quickly!

shit robot isnt the sort of name you hear every day, and as a result, markus lambkins dj / producer alias isn one thats easy to forget. but its lambkins music that has truly left an indelible impression on dance music lovers minds, and his newest release is no exception. on the heels of 2009s >simple things work it out< - itself the follow up to 2006s epic successes >chasm< and >wrong galaxy< - lambkin has delivered two new tracks that seem to effortlessly set just the right mood for the dance floor.

simple things is very much within the spirit of fellow dfa stars hercules & love affair and their hybrid of pop and retro piano house, and the main mix of the track is a right old romp. todd terje is on hand to bring a taste of flamboyant nordic disco to the proceedings.

two years on from his previous full-length, irishman-in-stuttgart marcus lambkin returns with what follows, his third album. recorded in his home studio, but mixed with juan maclean in new hampshire, it s a typically stylish and trippy set that methodically joins the dots between giorgio moroder, lcd soundsystem, italo-disco, german techno, balearic deep house, and intense chicagoan acid. lambkin has always been adept at making club music both left-of-centre and accessible, as if he secretly pines to make 80s synth-pop but is consistently drawn towards the dancefloor. this certainly explains the quantity and quality of the vocal numbers dotted throughout what follows.

i made music together with lee for years (alongside mick rolfe) as last waltz. he also worked as lizards with james hadfield (james released solo for me me me 02), oli worriner, is a talented young northerner who’s already making a great name for his solo output, both under his own name and his traela alias, as well his label “tunnyl recordings”.
i’m really flattered that they’ve let me release their first full solo release, and i love how they’ve brought out each others deeper and more emotive sides in these 2 tracks. shit robot is a hero of mine. i basically wore out the grooves on a bunch of his dfa stuff from just over 10 years ago, and i’ve avidly bought everything he’s released since. i met him this summer for the first time when we shared the bill at a festival, and was so happy to find that he’s also lovely guy in real life. they say you should never meet your heroes, but i don’t subscribe to that as this meeting led to not one, but two fantastic remixes for me me me 08. the originals are a bright mix of melodically analogue left leaning house, while the remixes zero-in on a punchier dancefloor vibe, with an epic version goodnight, as well a more heads down disco dub.
so yeah, links within links, and keeping it northeastern again i guess.

two new remixes taken from the album worse for wear! on side a : the title track wfw gets a 90s house rework by shit robot. on side b ,latter day methods got a nice bouncy mix from moullinex. both mixes have been tested in clubs with great response from the crowd.
