moka only has released an instrumental version of his latest lp, concert for one, via urbnet. concert for one instrumentals was released digitally on july 6th 2018 and as a limited edition vinyl on august 17th 2018. the self-produced record is packed with stand-alone characteristic beats, proving that the beats themselves have just as much story as the vocals.
“in this stage of my life there is much more reflection and contemplation, and i really feel that i was very open and unguarded on this album. as much as i love all the completed songs with the vocals, the beats on here hold enough detail to speak on their own.”

comprised of vancouver producers and multi-instrumentalists nick wisdom and astrological, canadian duo potatohead people boast a number of noteworthy accolades thanks to a their signature sound drawing influences from 90 s boom-bap, future soul, classic jazz, deep house and boogie/funk. beginning with a series of ep s, including their landmark -kosmichemusik- ep, potatohead people s productions quickly made their way to artists like illa j who tapped the duo to produce his now critically acclaimed self-titled album, as well as producers like kaytranada (who co-produced illa j s -strippers- with the pair). supporters such as soulection, nightmares on wax, pomo, dj spinna, big boi, and phife dawg have also played formidable roles in championing the sound of potatohead people worldwide.
def3 has seen his fair share of success so far in his career, including the release of 2014’s award-winning lp, wildlif3. but with his latest endeavor, small world, the stakes seem higher, and def3 is poised to reach a higher level of success.
following his self titled lp, illa j sometimes known as “john regal” (born october 13.1986 in detroit, michigan) is a singer, songwriter, rapper, producer, multi instrumentalist. he takes us on a trip to his hometown detroit with his third solo album home. his last lp successfully took illa j out of his brother and hiphop legend j dilla‘s shadow to show he is in his own lane. yet, yancey still felt as though he was in a box labeled rapper. teaming up with producer calvin valentine, who entirely produced the album, home is illa j‘s first album to properly showcase the full extent of his vocal range to put him in the singer-songwriter conversation. the listener can feel the soulfulness of this lp through illa j‘s singing and valentines‘ smooth production.

working on opposite sides of the landmass we call canada, vancouver/montreal duo potatohead people (producers nick wisdom & astrological) have been making waves for quite some time with their signature jazzy boom-bap meets boogie inside the bassbin vibes. called a -formidable tandem- by okayplayer, their sounds have been championed early on by the likes of kaytranada, soulection, nightmares on wax, pomo, exmag, big boi, and phife dawg. after a few early releases on vancouver based netlabel jellyfish recordings, brooklyn s bastard jazz reissued their 2012 landmark kosmichemusik ep and pressed a 7inch released on valentine s day 2013. the association landed their song back to my sht (featuring frank nitty of frank n dank) on a powerade produced lebron james documentary and nick and astro began working on a debut lp for bastard jazz, presented here.
adventures is the debut full-length album by french producer dandy teru. his opus is chock-full of notable guest vocalists and mcs and also includes remixes by tall black guy, belgian production duo monkey robot and his partner-in-crime quiet dawn.
usually, it’s that you’ve either never heard myka 9 or you’re given to making fantastic claims about the man and his virtuosity. superlatives adhere to myka, yet he is absurdly under-known for an artist of his stature, and it’s this paradox that too often governs discussion of his two and a half decades in rap. (a body of work, by the way, bookended by ghostwriting two songs on n.w.a. and the posse’s 1987 lp and now by this piece, sovereign soul.)
perhaps it’s simply that myka is more or less alone in the world of rap. his tonal palette is broader and brighter and his voice more liquid than other rappers, his melodic sensibility more unpredictably hard bop than 80’s pop soul—though he goes there too. and he has harder angles too—peep his compelling snarl here on the street duet, “indigenous areas,” with the elusive but excellent e-rule.
