phonica records welcomes spanish producer extraordinaire pional to it’s main label with the ‘xme / one night stand’ 12”. pional is miguel barros and the madrid based musician has been producing for over a decade. with a string of well received solo releases on hivern discs, permanent vacation, young turks and counter, remixing the likes of the xx, chairlift, the rapture, prins thomas and john talabot (who he also co-wrote the incredible ‘fin’ album ender ‘so will be now...’ with) as well as djing around the world, pional has been keeping very busy indeed. for his phonica release he has produced two versions of two very special tracks. on the a-side, ‘xme’ is a melancholic and uplifting electronic excursion with delicate flourishes of it’s synthesised melody becoming a real ear-worm throughout its six and a half minutes. the slower and more foreboding ‘quiet ceremony’ reinterpretation takes the same melody in a darker direction. on the other side, ‘one night stand’ is a bumping, stripped back and moody club track with ghostly vocals floating above metallic pads rising to a release of energy and emotion. the ‘slow drumapella’ lowers the tempo and alters the feel of the track, reducing its elements to a bare-bones drum track with the vocal, fx and pads eventually coming to the fore.

new zealand based ebm auteur body beat ritual makes his debut on bergerac with an incendiary ep of full throttle intense dark wave bangers. growing up in north west england immersed in hardcore punk and rave culture led to musical experiments and body beat ritual is his unique splicing of both aesthetics. using a combination of hardware, audio samples and midi sequencing, body beat ritual reclaims the moment when underground musicians in manchester, chicago and ghent put down their guitars and picked up drum machines and sequencers bringing the intensity, rawness and aggression of the band environment to the dancefloor. mortal sin is a certified smasher. absolute dancefloor decimation whenever its played out. no more description necessary. no mercy evokes the lost boys vibe with an equally high octane raw workout. trent reznor meets jeff mills at a daf gig on a flatliner. the ep closes with body politics which lowers the tempo to a chuggier zone, with an ode to female empowerment which keeps up that body beat pressure and intensity.

on the a side bftt and lack follow on from their debut release on the fifth cong burn tape. bftt crafts a peak time sub heavy techno weapon which beautifully collapses in on itself before its final ascent. lack layers polyrhthmic splashes of shackleton-esque percussion over dubbed out bass growls. flip it over and you ve got chekov following up his ace debut on shanti celeste s peach discs with electro 808 patterns and swells of low end weight. howes lowers the tempo with a low key bubbler that further explores the textures laid out on cong burn s first 12inch.

madrid. st petersburg. frigio is hooking up with russian electronic explorer volta cab for a four tracker of shadowy disco darkness. thick drum patterns are shot through with strobe as -johnny 320- enters the room. swaggering onto the floor, this greased thug means business. samples mutter intent as grooves grind and twist their way into the late hours. juanpablo lowers the lights for his remake. rhythms richochet and basslines loom in this lewd and dramatic track, a piece born in the grit and sweat of the floor under a haze smoke. the lights are kept low for the flip. -immortal fix- spikes and spins, laser beam synthlines cut through rumbling chords with snares that do more than just bear teeth. italy s hesperius draco closes johnny 320 with giallo horror grandeur. beats and words are shrouded in lilting strings for this sinister curtain fall.
nice price deal !!! all out war is a new label from richard hardcastle aka solid state, based in sheffield, uk. richard is known for his product of society edits on society recs, and work on toko, guidance, primitive and cookhouse recs in the late 90s/early 00s. the first all out war release is prisoners of wax vol 1, new edits by solid state, mastered for vinyl by warp legend rob gordon here in sheffield. the disco elements that marked their first 3 society releases are back in full effect... a: america - a radical extension of a french track from 1978, complete with fierce bass and guitar riffs, scything strings and urgent vocals plus police sirens for added drama... all out disco war! aa1: shortwave radiation - tames a once sprawling, 9 minute plus synth strumental behemoth. this 6 1/2 minute version lowers the tempo and cuts the flabbier excesses of the original to produce a far leaner, fitter space monster. aa2: if u love me started life as a quaint little spanish number in 1977. this version ditches the verses, allowing the intro and chorus to take centre stage. the resulting track has a hypnotic, spacey atmosphere... a quiet storm!

the second of the three vinyl eps featuring tracks from perc trax’s ‘slowly exploding’ compilation groups together three of the label’s main artists and closes with a producer making his perc trax debut. the a1 slot goes to label boss perc, whose ‘hyperlink’ builds on the sound of the dancefloor tracks of his last album with a huge kick giving way to swooping 8-bit chords whilst sawf’s ‘goves’, already tried and tested by perc over the last few months is an unrelenting breakbeat monster. on the b-side truss delivers one of the stand-out tracks of this series, with the surgeon supported analogue juggernaut that is ‘brockweir. closing things off is drvg cvltvre, who lowers the tempo but not the intensity with one of his trademark 303 workouts.
