maayan nidams second album new moon has many different levels. stylistically, the berlin-based producer has created an 11 track collection of alternative electronic rhythms that combines everything from blissful broken beat, to surrealist electro, jazzinfluenced moments, acidic house, exploratory techno, and piano interludes.
at its heart, the album celebrates the communal ideal of dance music with spirited, percussive tracks offering a clear distillation of what could only be described as the cadenza sound. but mirko also diverges from the dance floor, ducking into shadowy corners in search of more private emotions. rather than scattering energy, that tension between moods helps bind the album into a potent, coherent whole.
>sidonia< opens, immediately announcing that this wont be merely business as usual. with its groaning sub-bass and flickering percussive flashes, the track echoes the dubby, drifting melancholy of classic warp records-always, in truth, a key influence for cadenza. bells and voices lend an atmosphere of shimmering energy thats carried over into >around the angel< which sails jubilantly forward, propelled by intricate polyrhythms and uplifting female vocals.
cesar merveille first joined the cadenza team in 2009 with the outstanding ep. descarga, produced alongside fellow artist pablo cahn and garnering high critique from industry and public alike. a well known and much loved figure within candenzas vagabundos ensemble and equally the international club circuit, it is with great pleasure that cadenza welcome cesar for his debut solo release on the label. maayancholy is a beautiful and heart wrenching record, showcasing the delicate and fiercely musical palette of the french producer. introducing with shimmering open cymbals. light and airy they rustle simultaneously and offer diversity via their multiple manipulation. unsettled and sporadic, they splash throughout the remainder of the piece in an ethereal manner, casting light over delicate steinway piano keys and stabbing muted chord sequences. argentinean artist guti composed the aforementioned piano, his jazz and pianist training clearly used to full degree on maayancholy with simplistic singular key arrangements and piercing chord sequences. as the ascending chords rise, they dance magically alongside the pitter patter of percussive drums in a stripped back and raw demeanour. maayancholy effortlessly lays bare the emotive side of merveille through this ambient and surprising track. luciano picks up the remix duty for with a 16 minute interpretation. as condensed cymbals and piano chords are electronically warped, urgency prevails and groove sets in, securing lucianos twisted version as the perfect companion for the simplistic original. pace quickened and intensity sharpened, luciano demonstrates the clear dance floor attributes within . maayancholy in an electronic reinterpretation fit for the floor

pikaya take to the a-side with a flourish of robes and flashing beams of light. >jedi< is not the track youre looking for… wait, no—it absolutely is the track youre looking for, all mind tricks aside. kicking off with a sparse drum pattern, it quickly shifts from a measured andante to an easy jog, as resonant synths and sweeping filters whip up desert winds and high drama. high, lonesome counterpoints and a moody chord progression carry the faintest whiff of ennio morricones outlaw music, and playful trills—you could almost swear they were birdcalls—suggest a secret oasis hidden just behind the next hill.if you find >jedi< cinematic, then >fango< will really blow your wide-screen mind. starting with a rhythmic underpinning thats everything youve come to expect from a cadenza track - tight, ultra-kinetic, just a little bit jittery - pikaya build up layer upon layer of hazy pads and cool arpeggios that shimmer like the aurora borealis. bullfrog-throated horns occasionally burst in with a fat, amicable fanfare, announcing the arrival of the peak hour. great, unison handclaps play off against heel-kicking syncopations: madness ensues. and then everything slowly, imperceptibly smears together and loses focus, and the tune fades flickeringly away. talk about a double feature! now playing on a turntable near you
l delay is all about the drama—but at the same time, its skipping hi-hats and ringing bells suggest a carefree spirit and a supreme lightness of touch. talk about a duality: a cloak of reverb sucks the track perennially towards the dark side, but from the gleeful syncopations to the cheekily sampled live instruments, everything else opens up to the light like a morning yoga position. there s no funny business here, just tight rhythms and emphatic phrases that command bodies to move. its a monster of a track, but it must be of the loch ness variety, because youll never see it coming. on the flip, >frost< —haunted by the same high, lonesome string note as >l delay<— might be even more energetic, if that s possible. the high end has been smoothed down, and some of the roughhewn chicago edge of its companion tune sanded smooth, but its crazily syncopated standup bass line and distant, answering keyboards is all muscle, tensed and ready to explode. spacious drum tracks clear the floor for flashes of tambourine and handclaps so dry you can taste the salt on em. again, no nonsense is the name of the game: just raw, unadulterated funk with an ear for playful rhythms and limber moves
