blurt are perhaps the act who have played live at optimo more than any other. active for close to 40 years they are one of the uk’s all time great acts, phenomenal live and on record and supremely underrated. blurt mainman ted milton is a living legend. now in his 70s but more vibrant on stage than most artists 50 years his junior, he is a man of many talents, artist, poet, musician, performer…. in 1984 he released a solo 12”, “love is like a viol&#275,nce”, a no doubt accidental dancefloor gem completely out of kilter with any other music of the era that now makes total sense in 2017. dubbed-out stabs, programmed rhythm, trademark sax squeals and a more subdued than normal vocal that is strangely reminiscent of vincent price. thee definition of a cult classic and much in demand, side a of this 12” presents the a and b side (the equally outre “it’s only recently that stalins have begun to roost”) of this mighty 12” on one side of vinyl.

cervo is no stranger to producing high quality dancefloor ready house cuts. released on 13th october, ‘deyo / kasoa’ is no exception to this rule. after a tough period mentally and a formative trip to ghana, cervo combines his love for field recordings with his well known take on the classic house structure. the end result is slighter harder than his previous work but signifies his growth and development as an artist. the lead track, ‘deyo’, starts as it means to go on. straight away the punchy and energetic percussions draws you in and remains captivating for the entire track but it’s the melody that stands out. the sense of urgency is soothed by looping bass and piano riffs, complimenting each other perfectly throughout. ‘kasoa’ is approached differently than the flip ‘deyo’, more care and consideration is taken. it slowly builds up with field recordings as the backdrop providing context before allowing a clear and definitive vibe to be established.

after popping up on a various artists release last year, ugly frankie makes good on his connection to the vinyl only label with a full fat ep of chunked up, funked out house business for sunny climes. there s a dusty, rolling tone to the tracks on offer here - the crafty edits, nimble sample treatment and inventive layering creates a vibe you can lose yourself in all day. these aren t just straight up dancefloor rollers either cow boogie bumps and slides with a low slung swagger that will have you popping at a slower tempo but they re all prime for the get down. for some dusty, soul-laced cuts produced with flair, look no further.

marcel vogels intimate friends label welcomes a newcomer to the fold, with hypoleon displaying a warm and inviting take on outboard, leftfield, electronic soul with a wavey edge to it. the vocals on the original tracks have a haunting edge to them thanks to some hefty processing, but the power in the delivery is undeniable. the tracks meanwhile channel acid, electro and minimal wave in understated ways, played out with a live band dynamic that hooks you in from the start. jon mcmillions remix of tresberry turns the track into a simmering 4/4 jam for the warm up heads to get loose to, while tevo howard brings some of his signature boxy acid to bear down on the track.

knlb first appeared with the initialize 12inch on vibraphone in july of this year, and it s not taken them long to return with another slab of on-point, upfront house music loaded with flair and imagination. up again is a heavy, chugging and bumping jam that should inspire all manner of screwed up faces of appreciation on the floor, and then fog machine smell simmers things down to a more measured house groove. half life brings a few more dubby elements into the mix, and then the club mix of sin sends the record spinning off in a wonderfully dusty reverie of detuned pianos and late-hitting drums.

the fifth entry in the chronicles of slyngshot s yappin label is a four track ep, projecting his trademark hybrid style, popping on a low-bit train ride somewhere between the bronx and detroit. new era: slyng s in-house style, dirty percussion, with ailing watery rhodes. of xtc (action mix): a swift take-off, with fazed out keys over a romping kick, swashbuckling high-hat, and an insistent synth bass playing hide and seek, building the tension. of xtc (understatement mix): low end synth lines bop between singing drums, tribal chant and ethereal piano loop. stop playin part i: b-boy vocal sample with pitched up / back down again beats lending the tune a subtle drum and bass feel.
