the recording sessions for rastrumentals took place over seven years, between são paulo and brixton, but the roots of the project stretch back to the arrival of digistep’s father in 1970s bristol. aged 18 he had almost nothing to his name, apart from his treasured vinyl collection. these records are still in the family, and have been invaluable in shaping dubkasm’s unique sound. rastrumentals combines samba instruments such as the cavaquinho, pandeiro and cuica with the work of some of the uk’s greatest reggae musicians.

meditative and off-kilter, dubkasm’s new 12” is, unsurprisingly, completely unlike any other tune out there, and pays tribute to a too-frequently overlooked part of reggae tradition: dub poetry. originating in a collaboration between dubkasm and their long-time friend, norway-dwelling heavyweight bass guitarist, bajan steppa, enter the gates is a discomix built on a tuff bassline, skittering drums and retro synths, and features reflective, courageous lyrics about the enduring power of black liberation movements and consciousness, from gloucester vocalist rider shafique. the b-side contains an upfront instrumental cut, followed, in true dubkasm style, by a collaboration with a musical titan. mad professor’s incredible dub flips the original into a propulsive soundsystem killer, retaining the tune’s heart and spirit, but driving and percussive where the original is deep and soulful. mastered on to 1/2” tape at stardelta studios, and pressed on 180g vinyl.

for their first musical outing of 2012, dubkasm take a walk down the avenues of digital 80s reggae, showcasing the fresh vocals of rudey lee and solo banton. 8 bit sounds meet tough ja riddims, with shades of jammys, gussie clarke and steely & cleevie, expertly mixed by uk veteran nick manasseh with razor-sharp precision. a key figure in bristols reggae ancestry, rudey lee helped connect the bristol sound with its dub origins through collaborations with legendary pioneers smith & mighty during the 90s. on his first outing since his appearance on pinchs debut album >underwater dancehall<, rudey takes us back to his reggae roots with >emotion<, a soulful dancefloor bubbler with a conscious edge. solo banton, ever powerful in his hard-hitting delivery, proceeds to nail the message home with >are you ready<, a no-compromise deejay version taking things to a higher level. this cut guarantees a rewind in any dancehall, building on solos hit-after-hit track record, proven through his work with jahtari, maffi and reality shock.

bristol s roots reggae ambassadors dubkasm hand over remix duties to dub rocker and fellow bristolian rob smith for the fifth and final episode in their transform i limited vinyl remixes series. retaining the vintage grit and rastafarian message of tena stelin s original, he plants a bed of his expanding trademark bass work and slices off shards of echo into the void. this gem is now an anthem in his sets across the globe. side b was the missing piece in dubkasm s highly acclaimed transform i session. a bubbling reworking of christine miller s angelic tones takes us into a different space, anchored by cavernous lows and syncopated percussion. faithful to the reggae tradition, rob delivers a pure vocal followed by a minimal dub version offering a birds-eye view into the tracks deeper sonics.

the one we have been waiting for, peverelist and guidos transformations of dubkasm riddims. peverelist is in deep and meditaional form on >strictly ital<, putting ras adams dread drawl to great use over sumptuous subs and a sparingly used late 80s digital-style riff. his awareness of space, vibe and drive is just so on the money here! on the flip guido takes an more modern approach to >nyah keith<, reworking the track within his tougher plastic sound sphere to sound equally robust, but in a different, slightly less subtle manner. big tip for all rooted dubstep heads!

bristol meets brazil: transform i is the result of many years of work carried out between these two musical hubs. a heavy, authentic blend of roots and dub reggae, dubkasms sound varies from militant digital steppas to acoustic vocal tracks, with brazilian rhythms and samba instrumentation occasionally woven into the mix. atmospherics and percussion recorded in brazil reflect the journey of producer digistep tracing his brazilian roots, as instruments such as berimbau, zabumba, cavaquinho and cuica are called into play, while his bristolian counterpart dj stryda captures some of the finest vocalists from the uks reggae and dub scene and promotes the material worldwide. the album s conscious rasta messages are conveyed over lovingly crafted roots rhythms. amidst the more traditional dub styles, nyahbinghi drumming bonds with samba, capoeira percussion rides one drop rhythms, and the first album to mix uk dub with brazilian influences is born.
