time for a little neck bulging, slimy skin hip-slinking summer fun as a true craftsman steps from the studio shadows: jay shepheard, who’s back with a track that’s so infectious if you licked its back you’d trip for weeks. prepare yourselves for ‘bullfrogging’: wry funk, warmth and humanised technoid soul. taking a vocal texture then processing, harmonising and splicing the spawn out of it, jay’s precision balance of electronic hustle and anthromorphised action has all the hallmarks for a summer anthem. ‘early doors’ follows suit and there’s a massive clue in the title… soft-focused, warm, rolling and laced with textured chimes, it’s definitely tailored for those key transitions between warm-up and second gear. deep, trippy but coded with a hookiness that grabs rather than soothes, once again it’s classic shepheard but with a revitalised 2017 twist. hey, he didn’t lock himself away in the studio for twelve months for nothing, right? neither did jay’s long-time friend and neighbour mark henning, a man who hasn’t taken on a remix since the early 2010s. his return to the remix game is as poignant and powerful as jay’s return to releases as he removes around 70 percent of the frog and maximises the bullishness of the elements, creating a relentless tribal slammer of a version that still retains the warmth and soul of jay’s original. two returns to action, three killer tracks, one label you can always count on as your friend and no frogs harmed during the whole process. we’re pulling out some serious stops here.

jay shepheards retrofit imprint reaches its seventh release with this fine ep of old school sounds with an undeniably modern feel. >hefty done me right< begins proceedings with a house-disco hybrid sporting a particularly meaty analogue bassline, 80s electro vocal samples and shimmering pop synths, while >the electric model< marries a distinctly kraftwerk-esque motorik vibe with balearic disco sweeps and horns. on the flip, >one night in puzon< opens with a tense rising string line, broken with a crystalline piano mosaic and deep squelching bass. finally, tw closes proceedings with his own dub take on >hefty done me right<, amping up the electro feel of the original with an mpc cut-up style reworking filled with heavy vocal samples and rolling piano stabs, transplanting the original from its italian roots to 80s harlem.

starting in 2007 with a string of eps on munichs compost black label jay shepheard has gone on to release productions and remixes with a diverse range of influential labels including buzzin fly, rebirth, freerange, dirt crew and poker flat. alongside working with established labels jay also launched his own boutique label retrofit in february of 2010.since the launch retrofit has gone from strength to strength with reviews and features appearing on resident advisor,de:bug, juno plus, dj mag, pulse radio and dj history.

just over a year after it launched, jay shepeards retrofit presents its fifth release, with the label boss teaming up once again with matthew burton for a quartet of classy deepness you would expect from the imprint.

retrofit reaches release no. 4 with a solo endeavour from boss jay shepheard that truly encapsulates the labels mantra of referencing vintage house, disco and techno but laying it in a sheen of contemporary sonic dynamism. this is more than evident on the expertly paced >all over my nord< which is driven by a richly elastic analogue bassline riding the slick syncopation. a surfeit of melodic stabs imbues the track with real energy whilst the gradual rise to dominance of a pad wash drenched in detroit atmospherics adds the requisite emotion! this is complemented by the much more immediate >string theory< which opens the b side with a master class in future retro jacking house business whilst >kuderskis groove< bridges the gap between filtered disco aesthetics and deep house bpms with nonchalant ease. prime dj business once again from the retrofit camp.

jay moved through the ranks at juno and with 5 years record shop work experience under his belt jay now has a broad influence base for his current productions. these mainly focus on classic, itaol and nu disco, us, deep, and acid house right through vintage techno and the modern minimal sounds. his recent productions like this fine four track ep combine many of these influences but always lean toward the warm, retro, vintage electronic sounds that first time around he was too young to experience

home & garden is the debut album from the already established artist jay shepheard due for release in early 2013. shepheard has been releasing 12s and singles, and remixes steadily since 2007, blending disco and deep house seamlessly into his own unique sound.
