after hyperdubs first compilation of 10th anniversary dancefloor heaters, -hyperdub 10.2- features some of the labels best songs of the last five years or so. hyperdub is often associated with dark and brooding instrumental music, however, this mid-summer collection sheds some sunlight over that dread filled reputation, showcasing an underrated cast of talented songwriters, vocalists and producers. the album is laced with brand new cuts from kode9, cooly g, morgan zarate feauring. eska and ghostface killah, jessy lanza, dean blunt & inga copeland, and dva featuring zaki ibrahim. ranging from melancholy r&b, garage, funk, footwork and icy pop, -10.2- covers this overlooked side of the labels back catalogue. the album opens with dean blunt & inga copeland-s grime lullaby signal 2012, one of their final collaborations, moving into burials dubbed-out r&b on shell of light from his seminal album untrue, and jessy lanzas stand-out cut 5785021, before sliding into the digi dub meets r & b slow jam of south londons cooly g with obsessed. king britt features next, with his fhloston paradigm project, on the deeply emotive never defeated- featuring rachel claudio. after their collaboration on his pretty ugly album, dva is joined again by south african singer zaki ibrahim with their brand new summery mutant garage track solid. dam funk jumps on ikonikas funk bomb -mr. cake-, adding a fun, party vocal. continuing the -80s funk vibe is morgan zarate and roses gabors ice cold prince-influenced pusher taker, the lead track from his 2013 ep. jessy lanza contributes some more sparkling r&b with the brand new you and me, followed by another track from morgan zarate, a lost dub featuring the soulful eska and wu tang clans ghostface killah. the tempo raises in the final stretch of the album with dvas and fatimas collaboration just vybe, terror danjah & melekas shimmering r&g cut you make me feel and the 160 bpm soul of the late dj rashads only one from his acclaimed double cup album. the cd closes with the lo-fi, bashy mutation of kode9 & copelands lies lies. 10.2 calls on hyperdubs sirens to balance the moody energy of 10.1 with fourteen slices of hyper soul. let them lead you astray

here we are again, another dose of unsung heroes from the past. all the tunes on here (bar possibly the opening tune) will be well known by the rockabilly world. however to those of you who have recently become, or are about to be infatuated with this music you are now holding a compilation of some of the rarest and desirable tunes known to the serious collectors

the fruit tree foundation is an independent project that grew from the scottish mental health arts and film festival. ed by emma pollock (formerly of the delgados) and rod jones (idlewild), the fruit tree foundation also features james graham (twilight sad), scott hutchison (frightened rabbit), jill o sullivan (sparrow and the workshop), alasdair roberts, james yorkston, karine polwart and jenny reeve. the artists wrote and rehearsed the album over a long weekend in a remote perthshire farmhouse and recorded the final album in chem19 studios. the songs were written with a view to focussing on issues of mental health and wellbeing. artwork design by aidan moffat.

austin-based vvv is one of a new wave of garage producers whose music actually feels like an honest mixture of vintage and modern touches, rather than a trend-hopper looking to capitalize on a few dubstepforum fruity loops tutorials. he s an artist who happily mixes and matches signifiers, lacing his productions with subtle streaks of colour and leading them into unexpected detours. over the course of across the sea vvv swings from gleeful todd edwards-style vocal mush (-aisle seat-) to sepalcure-esque house-tinged workouts like -retreated- to more experimental fare. on tracks like -stuck between- or the stumbling punch-drunk jungle of -duration of light-Ñwhere breaks crash through filtered soul samples and cause ripples like dominoesÑhe always keeps the tracks backbone intact while doing some of the weirdest things to bass music youll hear this side of machinedrum. across the sea doesnt have the same visionary outlook as room(s), but it shares that albums embrace of fine-tuned sequencing and development. the tender, reflective moments that occasionally pop up are its best, whether its that memorable opener or the fogged-glass beats of -among the whispers,- which admittedly sounds a little like burial but higher-definition, with high-strung chords recalling netsky more than untrue. the albums closer -all that weve been through- nicely sums up the proceedings, throwing an out-of-context piano on top of another burial-esque beat loaded up with reverb yet still cutting clear as day. its perfectly representative of vvvs aesthetic: his debut album isnt always made up of entirely original ingredients, but like any good chef, he knows how to present it in a way thats irresistibly appetizing.
