“courtrai moderne: definite definitivos” is the very first full vinyl release of kortrijk’s own punk heroes: an anthology of their best songs. it was sheer enthousiasm when punk-craze hit kortrijk in the late seventies. frank holvoet didn’t really know how to handle a guitar but that didn’t really matter: he gathered drummer rik masselis (see also the p.i.g.z.), peter coppens and local wild boy lucien callewaert: definitivos were portuguese cigarettes and also the name of the band.

i walk in the dark i hear my steps, fixed, tough echoing, in the water, in the sound in the walls. so lonely, so confused, i sweep that ford of concrete, following a feeble light. i perceive other strides, more heavy, impetuous, that reverberate as well in these thick walls, of putrid water and violent brake-up an unusual calm until that, of such shadow i brush against the limbs, i perceive the essence, another breath indeed, but not of human’s appearance.

blasting off the a-side is >gravity<, a high-tempo number picking up linear momentum verse after verse, featuring serious vocals by g-tech. on the flip, cari goldens soulful vocals chime in and out of the expressional >no one knows<. safeword, a magnetic duo comprised of clint stewart and marc smith from san francisco, remix >gravity< through heaven and hell as >sunset< delivers a calm and spiritual opening piece slowly easing the listener into >tenderloin<, a dark, grave track with subdued vocals and feeble beats.
