nena’s “feuer und flamme” (german for “fire and flame”, with the additional figurative meaning of “great enthusiasm”) was released in 1985. it’s the third album by german pop band nena and the fourth studio album of its singer, gabriele “nena” kerner. the album was a success, reaching no. 2 in germany.
prompted by the success of “99 luftballons” (1984), which included english-language versions of songs from the band’s first two albums, nena recreated “feuer und flamme” in english as “it’s all in the game” (1985), with lyrics by canadian singer lisa dalbello. the experiment failed commercially and was not repeated with the band’s next album. gabriele kerner recorded a new bilingual german-english version of “anyplace, anywhere, anytime” with kim wilde in 2002.

turbo recordings is proud to present a release a full year in the making. a&rÆd by turbo elder thomas von party, gender embodies the adventurous spirit of his own multi culti label, and marks a return to the kind of mega remix pack we used to make when the world was young and an alternate dub rework was all you needed to get by. germanys skinnerbox sets the template with a high-speed jungle rave banger, which is an accurate enough description but not something we would expect you to ever repeat out loud. the 12-inch also features versions by swedish nice guy axel boman, who missed the submission deadline by 13 minutes but still managed to turn in a 12-minute epic jam, and glasgows auntie flo, who somehow harnessed the siren song of the iphone with a marimba-heavy mix.

subtlety is not the first word used in connection with most djs, but there is much more the métier of germany s gregor tresher than simply playing records, as lights from the inside attest: just as a painting or photograph appears to move if one stares at it long enough, with close listening the stratified grooves and melodies assembled on gregor s stunning third full-lenght artist album reveal an organic universe of shifting sound. meticulous attention to the latter element—melody—was of utmost concern to the frankfurt resident. not obvious, eight-bar earworms that would quickly exhaust their welcome, but musical lines that could repeat, develop and intertwine in different patterns. in this regard, lights from the inside harks back to gregor tresher s earlier releases, but as always his sound aesthetic continues to evolve in new directions.

track 5, a previously unreleased single meant for >the days of mars< album, but ultimately deemed out of place on the record, begins with the slow reveal of a repeating electronic ring atop a rising, falling, sine-curving synth. with each additional layer—a piercing, urgent synthesizer, a deep, continuous, ever-expanding rumble, the sound of a guitar, awash in reverb—the atmosphere thickens. its both restless and placid, anxious and tranquil. just over ten minutes in length, the track closes with a chorus of high-pitched synths that fade to a sparse, darkened end. this 12-inch, very likely gonzalez and russoms last, also features a remix from Âme, comprised of germanys kristian beyer and frank wiedemann. the house duo wholly transforms the a-side into a track so unrecognizable it seems brand new, taking it far from the introspective dreamworld to a dance party in the sweaty, blissed-out, wee hours of the morning
