two floor-smashing highlights from the gnarliest corner of the spectral sound library get a welcome reissue on the first limited addendum 12” to the dope jams nyc volume 1: 2005-2012 compilation. first up is futuristic acid banger “poison dart” by 2 am/fm, the double-headed beast of ann arbor’s d’marc cantu and james t. cotton. beginning with an eerie synth coiling endlessly around a shuffling, anxious beat, the track unexpectedly blasts off with one of the nastiest acid basslines since “washing machine.” commanding, otherworldly, and freaky to the core. on the flip, cotton flies solo and tosses listeners headfirst into his chaotic and terrifying “bizarre carnival.” pounding kicks, blown-out bass and frenzied synths relentlessly collide with one another, creating an endless nightmare of a world on the verge of machine-induced annihilation.

zweitwerk des world music trios um folk-koryphäe james yorkston! das zweite album von yorkston/thorne/khan wird anfang april auf domino veröffentlicht. es folgt dem von kritikern gefeierten banddebüt “everything sacred” von 2016 und präsentiert einen zusammenspiel verschiedener strömungen wie dem nordindischen sarangi, jazz-gefärbtem bass mit reminiszenzen an danny thompson und einer akustik gitarre, die den folk- & blues-koryphäen elizabeth cotton, dick gaughan und mississippi john hurt tribut zollt – und drei sehr unterschiedlichen vokalisten: james yorkston (east neuk of fife), jon thorne (isle of wight) und suhail yusuf khan (neu delhi). “neuk wight delhi all-stars” ist eine sammlung von traditionellen indischen und britischen folksongs, wunderschönen originalen und eigenwilligen coverversionen, die nicht nur klassische musik aus indien und jazz zusammenbringt, es zitiert ebenfalls reggae, irischen dudelsack und den einfluss des madagassischen gitarristen d’gary. Über diese bandbreite sagt thorne: “i think ytk is a fine example of how music operates without boundaries as a common international language and a source of cross-cultural unity. it’s an important message in the times that we live in.”
